If Microsoft says “That verification method isn’t working right now. Please try another method,” choose a different verification option already linked to your account, if one is available. The message does not identify the exact cause: Microsoft says temporary security blocks and code-delivery problems can both prevent verification. Stop repeatedly requesting codes, try another network, and use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper if you still can’t get in.
What the error means
This message can appear during Microsoft personal-account sign-in or password recovery, including Outlook.com recovery. It tells you the selected method cannot be used at that moment, but it does not say why. Microsoft’s guidance for the related “Try another verification method” message lists possible temporary security blocks and code-delivery issues; it does not establish that your account was hacked or that the phone number is invalid.

Microsoft says a security block may follow unusual sign-in activity, excessive or repetitive requests, a terms-of-service violation, or heavy compromised traffic from your geographic area. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of your particular account. See Microsoft’s verification-code troubleshooting guidance.

- Choose another method already listed. If the screen offers a recovery email or another linked option, use it instead of requesting another code through the method that failed. Confirm that the masked email address or phone number is the one you expect.
- Check whether a code was delivered. For email, look in junk mail for a Microsoft message from an address ending in
@accountprotection.microsoft.com. If the recovery address is another Microsoft mailbox, separate private browsing windows can help keep one account’s sign-in from replacing the other. For SMS, check that unknown senders are not blocked, your message inbox has room, and your messaging app is working. Microsoft says VOIP numbers cannot be added as a sign-in or verification-code method. - Stop repeated code requests and wait. Microsoft Support warns: “Don’t make lots of repeated attempts, as this may reset any time lock.” Its guidance says waiting a day may be enough; if nothing changes after 24 hours, wait longer, up to a week. This is advice, not a guaranteed cooldown or resolution time.
- Switch networks. Try moving between Wi-Fi and cellular data, or use another Wi-Fi network. Microsoft lists a network change as a troubleshooting step.
- Use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper. Enter the email address or phone number associated with the account in the official sign-in page. The helper checks the details and routes you to self-help or support options based on what it detects.
Choose the recovery route that matches your situation
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You can access another method already linked to the account | Use that method on the verification screen rather than continuing to request codes from the unavailable one. |
| You forgot the password and cannot access any listed security information | Use Microsoft’s account recovery form through its verification-code guidance. Follow the prompts for the account; the form is intended for this situation. |
| You know the password but have lost access to all security information | Follow Microsoft’s instructions for replacing the security information. A 30-day wait may apply; Microsoft’s guidance does not present this as an immediate workaround for the current verification block. |
Microsoft’s verification-code guidance explains the recovery options and their conditions. If the helper offers support, that does not guarantee an agent can override an automated verification block.

If you suspect someone else accessed your account
Do not assume the error alone proves compromise. If you have other reasons to suspect it, Microsoft advises scanning your PC for malware before changing your password. After securing the device, change or reset the password and review connected accounts, mail forwarding, and automatic replies. Follow Microsoft’s compromised-account instructions.
What to make of reported fixes
In a Microsoft Q&A thread opened July 30, 2025, one person said an email code worked but an SMS request during recovery produced this error. The person later reported success after waiting 72 hours and using Microsoft Edge. That is one user’s outcome, not an official waiting rule or evidence that Edge—or the same delay—will fix another account. Microsoft’s published guidance supports trying another linked method or network, avoiding repeated requests, waiting, and using the Sign-in Helper.

Can a security key fix the current error?
No. A physical security key is a possible passwordless sign-in method to configure after you regain access; buying one does not clear a current verification block. Microsoft lists security keys among its passwordless options in its verification-code guidance. Check account and device compatibility before setting one up.
