Then check how the SVG is embedded, whether its external assets loaded, and whether capture happened after the icon was ready. Those causes need different fixes; changing GPU flags or adding a longer delay without evidence is unlikely to be a reliable diagnosis.
Start by isolating the failure
Reproduce the capture using the same browser brand and version, automation library and version, operating system or container, launch arguments, URL, viewport, and device scale used in the failing run. Compare the page at that viewport in a headed browser if possible. Chrome’s headless command-line screenshot options include viewport controls, and headless behavior has changed across releases; record the actual browser version rather than relying on old advice. - Check the page before capture. If the icon is already missing in the live page, inspect its markup, CSS, dimensions, color, and console errors. If it appears in the page but not the screenshot, investigate capture timing, resource failures, or environment differences.
- Inspect the icon and its embedding method. Identify whether it is inline SVG, an
<img>pointing to an SVG, a CSS background or mask, or an external sprite reference such as<use href="icons.svg#search">. - Check console and network activity in the same run. Look for failed SVG, stylesheet, font, or image requests; incorrect relative URLs; missing fragment IDs; and cross-origin errors.
- Wait for the icon’s actual ready state. If script, animation, or fonts determine its appearance, wait for that specific condition before taking the screenshot.
Check whether the SVG embedding mode fits
SVG behavior depends on how it is used. An SVG loaded as an image has resource restrictions that differ from an SVG viewed directly or embedded as a document. For example, external stylesheets referenced by an SVG image do not take effect in that image context. If an icon needs host-page CSS, inline SVG may be a better fit, provided that approach works with the project’s security and maintenance requirements. - Inline
<svg>: useful when the page needs to style the icon directly. Confirm the markup is present and that computed styles do not hide it or give it zero dimensions. <img src="icon.svg">: check that the URL loads and that the SVG does not rely on resources unavailable in image context. Give the image suitable dimensions and meaningful alternative text when it conveys information.- CSS background or mask: inspect the computed CSS and the referenced URL. A failed resource or cross-origin restriction can leave an element blank or unmasked.
- External SVG sprite with
<use>: verify the sprite request succeeds and that the fragment, such as#search, matches an element in the file. External references are subject to same-origin and browser-support constraints; a data URL is not a generally reliable workaround. See MDN’s SVG linking guidance for<use>.
Fix failed URLs and cross-origin dependencies
Use the network log to identify the exact request that failed, then compare its requested URL, response, and console message. Relative paths can resolve differently on a nested route, in a local-server setup, or under a different base URL. Correct the path or configure the asset server’s access policy when appropriate; do not disable browser security as a default fix.

CSS properties that reference external URLs, including mask-image and clip-path, may depend on successful CORS validation. MDN describes URL and CORS behavior in its CSS <url> reference. For an SVG image containing nested references, inspect those requests too; the top-level SVG loading successfully does not prove every dependency loaded.
Wait for rendering, not just navigation
A screenshot can be captured while the document is still loading or before application code inserts the icon. In Chrome’s command-line interface, --timeout sets a maximum wait before screenshot capture even if the page is still loading. It is not proof that the application has finished rendering. This CLI behavior should not be generalized to every automation library’s navigation or screenshot API; check the documentation for the stack you use. See Chrome’s command-line reference.

In scripted automation, wait for a meaningful condition: for example, the icon element to exist and become visible, or a page-specific signal that the component finished rendering. A fixed sleep may mask a timing issue on one run and fail on another. Network idle is not automatically equivalent to application readiness.

Investigate GPU or host differences only when indicated
If the SVG is in the DOM, its resources loaded, and the page reports no relevant errors, but rendering still differs between machines, compare Chrome version, operating system, container libraries, and GPU or software-rendering configuration. Headless Chrome can use local GPU hardware in some circumstances; Linux GPU autodetection depends on environment details such as X11 availability. These facts do not make GPU flags a general fix for missing assets. Consult Chromium’s Headless documentation and GPU guidance for headless Chrome before changing that configuration.
Troubleshoot by symptom

If the cause remains unclear, reduce the page to a minimal reproduction and record the details that can change rendering:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a successful page load guarantee that an SVG icon is ready for capture?
No. Application scripts, external assets, and used fonts may still affect the icon after navigation completes; wait for a page-specific render condition.
Should I add a longer fixed delay or disable GPU first?
Neither is a good first diagnosis. Check the DOM, requests, styles, and readiness condition; investigate rendering configuration only when evidence points to an environment difference.
