How to Fix Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Lag and Connection Errors

Use the Nintendo Switch connection test to separate Smash Ultimate lag from matchmaking errors, then work through software, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and NAT checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by testing the Nintendo Switch connection, then use the result to tell lag apart from matchmaking trouble or a temporary online suspension. In System Settings → Internet → Test Connection, note the NAT type and download and upload speeds. Next, check that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is up to date, improve or compare your Wi-Fi with a wired connection, and investigate NAT only if matchmaking still fails. Change one thing at a time and test again; no single speed, NAT result, or connection method guarantees a smooth match.

First identify what is going wrong

Matches start, but controls feel slow or characters jump around

This is a latency problem: the game is responding slowly or updating erratically. Nintendo lists slow internet speeds, a weak wireless signal, wireless interference, and slow responses from network equipment as possible causes. A faster internet plan is not automatically the first or only fix. See Nintendo’s guidance for “Characters Jump Around, Slow Response, Lag”.

You cannot join, or the match disconnects as it starts

Treat this as a matchmaking or connection-stability problem. For the message “You Cannot Play Online Battles Right Now,” Nintendo says, “This error indicates your network connection was unable to continuously send or receive data.” Other online games may still work while Smash reports this problem. Follow Nintendo’s Smash-specific connection-error steps.

The game says online play is temporarily suspended

A suspension is different from a network error. Nintendo says suspensions may follow behavior such as disconnecting during battles; a network adjustment will not remove the suspension. Wait for it to expire and follow the message shown in the game. See Nintendo’s suspension guidance.

Run the Switch connection test and record the results

  1. On the console, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
  2. Record whether the test connects, the NAT type, and the reported download and upload speeds.
  3. Make one change from the steps below, run the test again, and compare the results. Also note whether Smash matchmaking or match behavior changed.

Nintendo’s latency troubleshooting guidance compares results with 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. These are Nintendo’s diagnostic comparison figures, not an independently established threshold or a promise of lag-free play. Signal strength, interference, network equipment, NAT, and the other player’s connection can still matter. Nintendo describes its NAT scale from A, best for peer-to-peer communication, to F, which cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. Its latency guidance explains the scale; its matchmaking guidance says NAT type F generally indicates restrictions that make connecting with other players impossible. No single letter guarantees a successful match.

Check the game version and restart the connection

Update Smash and confirm the other player’s version

Install the currently available Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update, and ask the person you are joining to check their version too. Nintendo says the versions should match. Its update page reports an update made available September 1, 2026; because update availability changes, check the page for the current status and instructions: How to update Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Restart the console and network equipment

If the connection is failing or unstable, restart the Switch and network devices such as the modem and router, then test again. Nintendo identifies wireless interference and unresponsive network equipment as possible causes of the Smash-specific connection error. Restarting is a reversible check; it does not establish which device caused the problem.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet connection

Improve the Wi-Fi test first

Move the console closer to the router and confirm it is using the intended network. Nintendo recommends placing the Switch within 10 feet of the router when creating a strong wireless connection. Treat that as practical placement guidance, not a guarantee: walls, interference, and router placement can still affect the signal. Re-run the connection test and try a match.

Use Ethernet if your console setup supports it

A wired connection is a useful way to check whether Wi-Fi instability is contributing to the problem. Connect the dock to the router with an Ethernet cable, then select the wired connection in the Switch’s Internet settings. The Switch OLED dock has a built-in LAN port; a standard Switch dock without one needs a USB LAN adapter. Switch Lite requires a compatible licensed accessory, such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand, plus a LAN adapter. See Nintendo’s wired connection setup instructions and Switch Lite instructions before choosing an adapter or accessory.

Connection What it helps you check Hardware and limits
Wi-Fi Whether closer placement or a better signal changes the connection test or match behavior. Signal and interference can affect stability; the result also depends on network equipment and the other player.
Wired Ethernet Whether bypassing Wi-Fi changes the test or match behavior. Some Switch docks need a USB LAN adapter; Switch Lite needs a compatible licensed accessory and LAN adapter. Ethernet will not by itself resolve restrictive NAT, an ISP problem, or the other player’s network.

If a different Ethernet cable restores the connection, the original cable may be damaged. A wired comparison is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure.

Investigate NAT if matchmaking still fails

NAT affects whether players can connect to each other. Nintendo says both your NAT type and the other player’s NAT type can affect a match, so trouble joining one friend does not prove that your console or home network is at fault. Ask that person to run their own Switch connection test. Nintendo’s NAT and matchmaking guidance explains the connection issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify whether your home network uses a combined modem/router or multiple network devices.
  2. Restart the network devices, then re-run the Switch connection test.
  3. If the issue persists, Nintendo suggests trying IPv6 off in relevant configurations. Change that setting only if you can restore it, and retest before making another change.
  4. For help optimizing the network for games, contact your ISP or network administrator. Ask the router manufacturer about firmware or factory-reset questions.

A successful general internet connection does not prove that Smash matchmaking will work. Avoid making broad router changes based only on a lag symptom; Nintendo’s cited guidance does not establish port forwarding or DMZ as universal fixes.

Escalate according to what else is affected

  • No devices at home can access the internet: check the modem and router, then contact your ISP or network administrator.
  • Other devices work, but the Switch has a connection problem: note the exact error code and the connection-test result, then contact Nintendo Support if the documented checks do not resolve it.
  • Only one friend cannot join: compare both players’ NAT and connection-test results before concluding the local network is responsible.

Nintendo’s Smash connection-error guidance and matchmaking guidance direct unresolved network issues toward the ISP or network administrator, and router questions toward the router manufacturer.
