Start by checking what is happening when the frame-rate drop or hitch occurs, then change one thing at a time: update Windows and drivers if appropriate, check Task Manager, reduce avoidable background work, verify the game is using the intended GPU, and test settings that apply to your Windows version and game mode. Open-world stutter can have more than one cause; no single Windows setting fixes every game.
First, identify when the problem happens
Note whether performance is consistently low, or whether brief hitches happen at particular moments, such as while moving into a new area. Also note whether it began after a Windows or graphics-driver update. These observations help you choose what to investigate; they do not identify a cause by themselves.

Change one setting at a time and compare in the same game conditions—for example, the same location and similar movement. The official Microsoft and NVIDIA guidance below describes Windows features and general behaviors; it does not establish expected FPS gains for a particular open-world game or PC.
Check updates, but account for shader-cache rebuilding
Check Windows Update, including optional driver updates, using Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance. If the issue began immediately after a graphics-driver update, avoid repeatedly swapping drivers as a default fix: a newly installed NVIDIA driver clears its shader cache, and the first game run afterward may hitch while shaders are compiled again.

NVIDIA explains that compiled shaders can be reused on later runs, while a cache that is too small can evict shaders still in use. Its Control Panel reference says: “Shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of game-play stuttering.” A hitch on an early run after an update can therefore reflect compilation rather than a failing component.
Use Task Manager to look for resource pressure
When the slowdown is occurring, open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, and disk activity as well as the processes using them. Microsoft’s performance recommendations use Task Manager to help identify heavy processes and resource use.
- If an unneeded application is consuming substantial CPU or memory, close it and compare the game again.
- If disk activity is high during a hitch, note which process is using the disk; this is a clue to investigate, not proof that the storage device needs replacement.
- If one resource appears heavily used, that observation helps narrow the diagnosis but does not, on its own, prove that a particular component must be upgraded.
Reduce background work and address low storage space
Close apps you do not need while playing, and consider disabling unnecessary startup apps or limiting unneeded background activity. Microsoft’s Windows guidance also recommends Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup when free space is low. Low disk space can reduce overall Windows performance, but that guidance is not evidence that buying an SSD will fix game stutter.

These steps are reversible and can reduce competing system activity. After each change, compare performance under similar in-game conditions instead of changing several things at once.
Make sure the game uses the intended GPU
On a PC with more than one GPU, check whether the game is assigned to the higher-performance graphics processor. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game (or add it if needed), choose Options, then select High performance if that is the GPU you intend to use. Microsoft documents this per-app setting in its Windows 11 graphics guidance. NVIDIA’s Control Panel also offers per-program graphics settings on supported systems.
Restart the game after changing its graphics preference so the selection can take effect. This step is relevant to multi-GPU systems; it does not raise performance automatically when the game was already using the intended GPU.

Try Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only when it applies
Windows 11 has an optimization for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft’s documentation for windowed-game optimizations says the feature moves supported games to the flip presentation model, reducing frame latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.
It is not documented as a universal fix for stutter, and its stated scope does not cover every game or exclusive-fullscreen play. If your game and display mode fit, test the setting and compare in the same scene. Do not assume it will help a DirectX 12 game or a game running exclusively fullscreen.

Windows’ Best performance power mode can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed. It is a reversible test rather than a guaranteed FPS fix. Microsoft cautions that it uses more power and, on laptops, can drain the battery faster and make the device warmer.

Decide whether hardware is actually the limitation
Microsoft notes that software steps may not significantly improve an older PC with outdated hardware, and that upgrading may be a long-term solution. That general advice does not identify which part to buy. Before considering a purchase, compare your PC’s measured resource use with the game’s stated system requirements and look for a specific, repeatable limitation. The cited guidance does not establish that a GPU, RAM, SSD, or cooling upgrade is the right fix for any particular reader.
Quick Recap
How to choose what to try
| Option | Most relevant when | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Close apps, manage startup activity, and free low storage space | Other processes or low available space may be contributing to Windows performance problems. | Free and reversible; does not establish that a specific component is defective. |
| Per-app GPU preference | The system has multiple GPUs and the game may not be using the intended one. | Applies to supported systems; restart the game after changing the selection. |
| Windows 11 windowed-game optimization | A compatible DirectX 10/11 game is running windowed or borderless-windowed. | Defined scope; not a general fix for every API, presentation mode, or hitch. |
| Allow shader cache to rebuild after a driver update | Stutter appears on an early run after installing a new NVIDIA driver. | First-run hitches may occur during compilation; cache behavior is not proof of hardware failure. |
| Best performance power mode | You want to test whether a higher-performance CPU power setting changes results. | Higher power use; laptop battery may drain faster and the device may run warmer. |
| Hardware upgrade | Measurements or the game’s requirements point to a specific hardware shortfall. | Costly and component-specific; generic Windows guidance does not determine what to buy. |
