How to Fix Stuttering and Frame-Rate Drops in PC Games

PC game stuttering and low FPS are different symptoms. Use repeatable tests to isolate updates, background software, graphics settings, and possible hardware limits before buying parts.

PC-game stuttering and low FPS are related, but they are not the same problem. A low average frame rate means the game is slow much of the time; stuttering or hitching is a brief freeze or uneven frame delivery that can happen even when average FPS looks fine. Because a hitch can originate at several points in the game’s data path, the symptom alone does not identify a faulty part. Work through repeatable, reversible checks before considering an upgrade.

First, identify what the game is doing

Before changing settings, reproduce the problem in the same game scene. Note whether FPS stays low throughout play, drops only in particular areas, or whether short freezes occur while the average FPS remains adequate. Record the game, graphics settings, resolution, Windows version, GPU, CPU, RAM, storage type, and when the issue began. Change one variable at a time; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change mattered.

Stuttering can have more than one cause. NVIDIA’s stuttering guidance describes possible issues at different points in the data path, so a report of “micro-stutter” or “FPS drops” is not enough to diagnose a specific component.

Check whether the problem started after an update

If the hitching began after a game patch or graphics-driver update, check the game’s notices and the installed driver’s release notes for a matching known issue. AMD’s stability troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for documented driver issues, updating the affected application, and considering an earlier driver when a known problem has no fix.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

A driver update can also cause a temporary change in shader-cache behavior. NVIDIA says its driver cache stores compiled shaders for later runs, and installing a new driver deletes that cache. Since shader compilation can cause gameplay stutter, the first run after an update may hitch while shaders are compiled again. Compare later runs before treating a one-time first-run hitch as a persistent fault. NVIDIA describes shader compilation as a common cause in its Control Panel documentation; that is product documentation, not an independent estimate of how frequently it causes stuttering.

Rule out background software conflicts

As a quick comparison, temporarily close overlays, capture utilities, and other nonessential background apps, then replay the same scene. If the stutter stops, reopen or re-enable the items one at a time to find the conflict.

If closing apps does not help, a Windows clean boot can test whether startup software or a nonessential service is involved. Microsoft explains that a clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, making background conflicts easier to isolate. It temporarily removes some functionality, so note what you disable and restore normal startup after testing.

  1. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your Windows version. Record disabled services and startup items.
  2. Restart, launch the game, and test the same scene and settings.
  3. If the stutter is gone, re-enable items in groups and repeat the test. Narrow down the group until the conflict returns, then identify the individual item.
  4. Restore normal startup when finished. If the stutter remains during a clean boot, this test has not established a background-software cause.

Check Windows graphics settings and reduce demanding options

Test windowed-game optimizations when they apply

On Windows 11, “Optimizations for windowed games” applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. If your game meets those conditions, test the setting and restart the game before comparing. Microsoft documents the feature and its scope in Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. It is not a universal fix for every game or display mode.

Choose the game’s GPU on multi-GPU systems

If your PC has more than one GPU, check the per-app graphics preference in Windows and try “High performance” for the game. The setting is intended to select a preferred GPU for that app; the appropriate choice depends on your hardware. Microsoft describes the Graphics settings path and GPU preference in its Windows graphics-performance preference guidance.

Lower settings in a controlled test

Reduce one graphics option at a time and repeat the same scene. If video memory (VRAM) is constrained, test lower texture quality first: NVIDIA identifies texture data and limited VRAM as possible contributors to stuttering. There is no guaranteed FPS gain from changing a particular option, and the result depends on the game and system.

Consider Auto SR only on supported systems

Auto SR is an optional experiment, not a general stutter fix. Microsoft says support depends on the device and render resolution, and the effect varies with the game, settings, and system. Check Microsoft’s Auto SR FAQ to see whether your device and game are eligible; compare the same scene before and after enabling it.

Upgrade only after a measurement points to a limit

Do not buy a GPU, RAM, or storage drive based on stuttering alone. Monitor the system during a repeatable run and look for evidence that a particular resource is limiting the workload. A GPU upgrade is relevant only if GPU capability is the constraint for the game, resolution, and settings you intend to use. A RAM or storage change likewise needs evidence of memory pressure or storage-related loading in the affected workload.

If you compare upgrade options, use the confirmed bottleneck and the same target game, resolution, and settings. Check measured performance in that workload, compatibility with the existing PC, and the total upgrade cost. A generic claim about “gaming performance” does not establish that an option will address your specific hitching.
