If Streamlabs Desktop stutters while looping videos, GIFs, or other media, test the media-file-caching setting in Advanced settings. Caching reuses decoded frames to reduce repeated CPU/GPU decoding work, but it uses memory and is not a universal fix. First identify whether the problem affects the stream or preview, game frame rate, or both; then compare the same workload with caching on and off.
What media-file caching does
When a media source loops, Streamlabs can keep its decoded frames in memory and reuse them rather than repeatedly decoding the file. Streamlabs author Eddy Gharbi described the change this way: “The changes made involve caching the decoded frames instead of decoding them repetitively.” The feature is intended to reduce repeated decoding work for looping media such as MP4 video, GIFs, and MP3 audio.

The trade-off is CPU/GPU decoding work for memory use. Streamlabs’ article says the cache has a 2GB limit and that the app reduces its cache use if other applications cause local memory pressure. Eddy Gharbi reported “more than 35%” lower CPU usage in Streamlabs’ internal measurements; the article was published June 5, 2019 and last updated January 28, 2022. That is a vendor-reported measurement, not an independent benchmark or a guaranteed result for a particular computer.

Before changing a setting, note where the symptom appears. Stream output or preview stutter and in-game FPS drops can have different causes, even if they happen at the same time.

- Stream or preview stutters while media loops: test caching first, especially if the same scene is smooth when the media source is not playing.
- Game FPS drops, but the stream and preview look smooth: investigate game rendering load and overlays; the media-caching toggle is not specifically a game-FPS fix.
- Both stutter: test caching under a repeatable workload, then check overall system load and gather diagnostic information if the result is unclear.
Test the caching setting safely
- Record a baseline. Use the same scene, looping source, game or other workload, and stream settings for each comparison. Note whether the preview, stream output, game FPS, or more than one is affected.
- Find the setting. Open Streamlabs Desktop’s Advanced settings and locate the media-file-caching toggle. Streamlabs’ cited explanation does not specify a current version-specific path or exact UI label, so labels may differ between versions.
- Change only that setting. Toggle media-file caching off and repeat the same workload. Restart only if Streamlabs prompts you to do so.
- Compare like with like. Check whether the original symptom improves, worsens, or stays the same. A repeatable change may suggest that caching is related, but the toggle test alone does not establish the cause.
- Restore the prior setting if needed. If turning caching off makes CPU performance worse or does not help, switch it back to its original state. Avoid repeatedly clearing cache as a substitute for diagnosis.
Check system load before buying hardware
Streamlabs’ system requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8GB of RAM as a minimum and recommends 16GB or more for more demanding streaming setups. It also recommends an SSD of 512GB or larger. These are broad requirements, not evidence that a RAM or SSD upgrade will fix a particular stutter.
Check memory and CPU/GPU use while reproducing the problem, and close unnecessary applications to see whether the symptom changes. Consider a compatible RAM upgrade only if the computer is below the relevant memory guidance or diagnostic information points to memory pressure; verify the laptop or motherboard supports the memory before buying. The requirements page does not connect SSD capacity to this specific caching issue.

Upload a diagnostic report if the test is inconclusive
If the stutter persists or the caching test does not clarify it, Streamlabs provides a diagnostic report for support to review. Its support instructions say the report includes app state, error messages, stream settings, scenes and sources, and computer details such as CPU, memory, GPU, and driver information.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Get Support.
- Select Upload Diagnostic Report.
- Use the report when contacting Streamlabs support, and describe whether the issue affected stream output, preview, game FPS, or more than one.
Do not use Clear Cache and Restart casually as an early troubleshooting step. Streamlabs’ getting-started guidance says clearing cache resets user data; its going-live troubleshooting guidance warns that scene collections or settings may be lost and advises contacting support first.

If game FPS drops too
For a game-only or combined FPS problem, Streamlabs’ separate guidance suggests checking third-party in-game overlays and reducing GPU frame output with synchronization or a frame cap, or lowering in-game graphics settings. These are adjacent checks for game performance, not fixes specific to media-file caching. Some instructions in that guide refer to Windows 10, so confirm that they apply to your operating system and current game setup.
