Choose decorations to suit the content and the amount of screen space you can spare. A simple design is often easier to read than a full-screen frame.

Subtle seasonal frame
Try a thin evergreen border, warm lights, or a snowflake motif around the camera or scene. A transparent PNG can preserve clear areas in the middle. Place it above the camera or gameplay source in the scene’s layer order.

Matching scene cards
Create coordinated “Starting Soon,” “Be Right Back,” and “Stream Ending” scenes for a consistent look. Streamlabs lists these as examples of scenes to create when building an overlay manually. Streamlabs’ overlay guide
Animated snow or lights
An animated transparent graphic or hosted overlay can add movement. Check that it plays as expected and remains readable in your streaming software. The setup documentation explains image and browser sources, but does not establish the performance cost or license terms of any particular animation.

Festive alerts
Use a provider’s alert widget as a Browser Source if you want interactive notifications. OBS explains that alerts are not built into OBS itself; a third-party alert page can be embedded in a Browser Source. OBS sources guide Keep private, account-linked widget URLs confidential.

Add a Christmas overlay in OBS Studio
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene for your seasonal layout. A separate Christmas scene or scene collection is a convenient way to keep the rest of your setup unchanged, though it is not a software requirement.
- Add the appropriate source. In the Sources dock, select the plus button and choose Image for a local static graphic or Browser for a hosted overlay or widget. OBS documents image sources for images or slideshows and browser sources for web pages. OBS sources guide
- Set up a Browser Source, if needed. Get the widget URL from its provider and enter it in the Browser Source properties. OBS describes embedding third-party alerts this way. Do not share an account-linked widget URL publicly. OBS alerts and browser sources
- Position and layer the graphic. Resize and move the source so it frames the content instead of covering the game, camera face, captions, chat, or status text. OBS sources can be positioned and ordered within a scene. OBS sources guide
- Preview and test. Check the complete scene before going live. For an alert widget, use the provider’s test function if available; Streamlabs documents a dashboard test function for its alerts. Streamlabs’ overlay guide
Add an overlay with Streamlabs
Install one from the library
In Streamlabs Desktop, browse or search the overlay library, choose an overlay and its components, then install it and confirm opening the desktop app. Streamlabs says the overlay appears in the scene collection. Library contents may change, so check the current listing for the specific design and its compatibility. Streamlabs’ overlay guide
Import an overlay file
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings.
- Go to Scene Collections and choose Import Overlay File.
- Select the
.overlayfile, then inspect and adjust the imported scenes before streaming.

Build scenes manually
Create a scene collection, add scenes such as Starting Soon, Live, and BRB, then add image files through each scene’s Sources control. This lets you arrange individual graphics yourself. Streamlabs’ overlay guide
Use Streamlabs widgets or overlays with OBS
Streamlabs documents an OBS plugin route and a way to transfer overlays by importing a Streamlabs scene collection without the plugin. Its custom widgets can also be added to OBS through Browser Source. Follow Streamlabs’ current instructions for the applicable route and check compatibility before importing. Common problems and fixes
- The image does not appear: Confirm that the image source points to the intended local file and that the source belongs to the scene you are previewing.
- The overlay covers important content: Resize or reposition it, or move it to a less prominent corner. Check the full scene rather than judging only the overlay graphic.
- A browser widget is blank or not updating: Check the provider URL and Browser Source properties, then use the provider’s documented setup and test steps.
- An imported overlay looks wrong: Verify that it is intended for your software, inspect each imported scene and component, and adjust positions before going live.
- You are unsure whether you can use an asset: Review the specific asset’s license and permitted uses. The general OBS and Streamlabs setup guides do not establish the terms for third-party artwork.
