Start by checking whether buffering affects one app, every app on the TV, or multiple devices in your home. That quick comparison helps distinguish an app problem from a device or network problem. Then measure the connection where the TV is, improve Wi-Fi conditions, and work through the fixes that match the pattern.
First, find out how widely the problem occurs
- On the same TV or streaming device, open another app and try playing video.
- Try the affected service on another device connected to the same home network.
- Only one app buffers: Focus on that app or its service. Close and reopen it, check for updates, and consider reinstalling it if the problem continues.
- Several apps buffer on one TV or streaming device: The device, its software, or its connection is a more likely place to investigate. YouTube TV recommends contacting the device manufacturer if the issue affects supported apps across the device.
- Several devices have trouble: Check the home network and whether there is an outage. Netflix advises telling your internet service provider (ISP) whether the problem affects one device or others on the same network.
These patterns narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a single cause. Buffering can involve network quality, Wi-Fi interference or congestion, an app or software issue, or a device-specific problem.

Measure the connection where the TV is
Run the streaming service’s connection test, if available, or an internet speed test near the TV while buffering is happening. A result measured on a phone beside the router does not show how much speed reaches a TV in another room. YouTube recommends testing near the TV, checking the speed available there, and minimizing other connected devices during the test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

They are YouTube TV guidance, not guarantees for every streaming app or household.

| Playback situation | YouTube TV recommendation |
|---|---|
| 4K programs available to 4K Plus subscribers | 25 Mbps or more |
| Reliable HD, even with other devices using the network | 13 Mbps or more |
| One HD stream | 7 Mbps or more |
| Standard definition | 3 Mbps or more |
| Below 3 Mbps | May load slowly or rebuffer |
YouTube TV also cautions that multiple devices streaming at once can cause buffering around the 7 Mbps level. Separately, YouTube’s general video guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD; that general recommendation is not a substitute for YouTube TV’s quality- and use-specific figures.
A good speed result does not rule out interruptions during a live broadcast. YouTube TV notes that congestion and Wi-Fi interference can affect live programming even when the network otherwise appears strong.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Improve Wi-Fi and reduce competition for bandwidth
- Move the router and TV or streaming device closer together if practical.
- Place the router in an open, elevated spot, away from appliances and other wireless devices.
- Temporarily pause large downloads or other household streams, then see whether the game becomes steadier.
- If the TV supports a wired connection, testing with a cable can help determine whether the Wi-Fi path is part of the problem.
If multiple devices have gone offline, Amazon Fire TV guidance notes that a network outage may be involved. Check your ISP’s service status or contact it if the problem affects the household rather than just the TV.
Refresh the app and streaming device
- Close the streaming app and open it again.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. Restart the router as well if other network symptoms point to it.
- Check for app updates and device system updates, then install available updates.
- If only one app still fails, reinstall it. Sign-in may be required again.
On Amazon Fire TV, Amazon’s UK support guidance also recommends clearing the affected app’s cache and data, restarting Fire TV, reinstalling the app, and checking for a system update. Menu names can vary by Fire TV model and software version; follow the on-screen prompts. A factory reset is not an appropriate early troubleshooting step.

On YouTube TV, trade lower delay for more buffer
If you use YouTube TV, its Broadcast Delay option affects how close the stream is to real time. YouTube TV explains: “The lower the broadcast delay, the less buffer the video player will have.” A smaller buffer can make interruptions more likely.
In the YouTube TV app on a TV, open the three-dot menu and select Broadcast Delay. Choose Default to prioritize fewer interruptions, or Decrease if reducing live spoilers and delay matters more. Even with a strong-looking connection, congestion or Wi-Fi interference may still disrupt live playback.

Escalate with the right details
- Several apps fail on one TV or streaming box: Contact the TV or device manufacturer.
- Multiple devices have network problems: Ask your ISP about an outage, modem, or router issue.
- Only one service or app fails across devices: Contact that service’s support.
When you contact support, have the app name, device model, whether it uses Wi-Fi or a cable, whether other devices are affected, and the speed measured near the TV. This information helps distinguish a service, device, and connection issue.

YouTube Help suggests trying another device or connecting a laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable to test another way to play a title on the television. This can help isolate an app or TV setup problem; it will not repair weak Wi-Fi or a service-side problem with the live feed. Check that the laptop and TV connectors are compatible before choosing a cable.
