Start by checking whether your Android device meets DroidDeck’s hardware requirements, then identify what actually fails: Steam itself, one game, or performance after a game starts. The fixes differ. DroidDeck’s README sets Android 9 or newer and a supported Adreno GPU as the baseline, while noting that compatibility and performance vary by device. Check the current DroidDeck requirements and device information before changing game settings.
First, check whether your device is supported
Before reinstalling DroidDeck or experimenting with Proton, confirm the Android version and GPU in your device’s specifications. The DroidDeck README lists Android 9 or newer and an Adreno 730 or newer, or Adreno 8xx, as its supported baseline. It explicitly lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 GPUs as unsupported. These are project-stated requirements, not a guarantee that every device meeting them will run every game well; DroidDeck says hardware validation is limited and results vary by device. See the DroidDeck README for current information.

- Android version: Android 9 or newer.
- GPU: Adreno 730 or newer, or Adreno 8xx, according to the project’s listed baseline.
- Unsupported GPU families/models listed by DroidDeck: Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710.
If your device falls outside the listed support, changing a game’s Proton version is unlikely to overcome the hardware eligibility issue.
Steam closes before Big Picture appears
If DroidDeck starts Steam and it closes before Big Picture loads, check Android’s child-process restriction first. DroidDeck instructs users to disable Restrict child processes in Developer Options because the restriction can terminate processes Steam needs.

Big Picture appears, then the DroidDeck session dies
This is different from Steam closing before its interface appears. Older DroidDeck release notes describe a version-dependent option called Skip Steam’s xalia helper for sessions that die shortly after Big Picture appears because the helper’s system calls are refused. If your installed version exposes this option, try it as a targeted test and restart the session as needed. Do not assume it is available in every release or that it fixes unrelated launch failures. Check DroidDeck release notes for the option and version context.

Steam stays open, but one game will not launch
When Steam remains usable and only one game returns to its library page or fails to start, investigate that game’s compatibility before changing global DroidDeck settings. Requirements, the game’s Proton behavior, or anti-cheat support may be the cause. DroidDeck’s FAQ says games that rely on kernel-level Windows anti-cheat without Linux Proton support will not run. Read DroidDeck’s FAQ for its compatibility position.

Valve’s troubleshooting guide is written for Steam Deck, not DroidDeck. Its advice can still provide useful Steam-side ideas—such as checking for updates, verifying the game, trying a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, or lowering graphics settings—but DroidDeck runs on Android with different hardware and session implementation. DroidDeck releases document components such as FEX, DXVK, and VKD3D-Proton, as well as extra tools including GE-Proton and proton-cachyos. Their presence does not establish one universally best component or version for every game. Change one relevant compatibility option at a time, keep a note of the previous setting, and restart the session if the change requires it. DroidDeck release information
A game launches, but runs slowly
First decide whether the whole Steam interface is sluggish or only the game. That distinction helps avoid applying a menu-specific control to a game-performance problem.

If Steam menus are slow but games are fast
DroidDeck’s older release notes describe an optional Zink lazy descriptors setting for sluggish Steam menus in cases where games run quickly. If the option exists in your installed version, test it on its own and observe the result. Some performance controls take effect only after starting a new session. Review the relevant DroidDeck release notes.

Start with the game’s own graphics settings and reduce demanding options. Valve recommends lowering graphics quality as a Steam Deck performance troubleshooting step; apply that as adjacent Steam-side guidance rather than a guarantee for Android hardware. Avoid enabling several DroidDeck performance options at once: changing one setting at a time makes it possible to tell whether it helped.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
DroidDeck release notes also document optional core-pinning controls for Steam UI and game processes. Their availability and effect are version-dependent; consult the notes for your build rather than assuming a specific menu path or performance gain. DroidDeck releases
If performance drops after the device heats up
On a supported phone, note whether the device becomes hot and performance declines during a sustained session. DroidDeck’s compatibility database specifically flags thermal-throttling monitoring for a supported Adreno 730 phone and mentions active cooling on some handhelds. That is a device-specific observation, not evidence that every slow game is caused by heat. Consult DroidDeck’s compatibility information.
If you have confirmed heat-related throttling on a supported phone, a clip-on phone cooler is an optional accessory to consider. Check clamp fit and clearance, power source, noise, and whether it blocks vents or controls. Cooling cannot fix unsupported hardware, Android process restrictions, anti-cheat incompatibility, or a problematic Proton configuration.
Use DroidDeck logs when the cause is still unclear
If the preceding checks do not resolve the failure, reproduce it and report the conditions rather than describing only that “Steam crashes.” DroidDeck asks users to attach the session folder from Download/DroidDeck/ when reporting an issue. Depending on the failure, that folder can include device and app details, crash information, guest session output, compositor output, and Steam logs. The repository and release notes identify files such as device.txt, app.log, crash.log, session.log, wayland.log, and Steam logs where applicable. Issue reporting and diagnostics · Release notes
