If Steam Client WebHelper is using too much CPU in Windows 11, update Steam first, then check which part of the client triggers the load. Valve’s September 6, 2026 client re-release fixed one reported case involving events in the Library tab, but it is not a universal fix. If CPU use continues, use Task Manager to compare Steam’s Library, Store, Friends and Chat, and in-game Overlay, then test only the setting that matches the view or activity causing the spike.
Update Steam before changing settings
Open Steam, check for client updates, and let the client restart if an update is available. Valve re-released its September 1, 2026 client on September 6 with a fix for a reported case in which steamwebhelper.exe could use high CPU when certain events appeared in the Library tab. That fix is specific to the reported Library-events issue; Valve did not say it resolves every cause of Steam Client WebHelper high CPU usage. Valve’s Steam client update announcement

Find which Steam view is associated with high CPU
WebHelper is part of Steam’s web-based client interface. Seeing several WebHelper processes in Task Manager does not, by itself, show that something is wrong. Look for sustained CPU use and whether it changes with a particular Steam view or activity.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager.
- Expand the Steam process group and watch the WebHelper rows.
- Move between Library Home, Store, and Friends and Chat. If the issue happens during gameplay, also compare a game session with the Steam Overlay enabled.
- Compare similar periods of activity rather than drawing a conclusion from one brief CPU reading.
If the load rises mainly on Library Home, inspect the feed. One Steam Community user said removing a particular game news item at the top of their Library feed resolved that person’s recent issue. This is an anecdotal clue to check when the symptoms match, not a general remedy for every user. Steam Community discussion

Test the setting that matches the trigger
Change one relevant option at a time, restart Steam if indicated, and repeat the same activity you used to identify the trigger. Community reports on these options are mixed, so restore a setting if it does not improve the behavior.
For web views or video-heavy content
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Interface.
- Turn off Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views.
- If the option appears, also test turning off Enable hardware video decoding, if supported.
- Restart Steam, revisit the view that coincided with high CPU use, and compare. If there is no improvement, turn the changed option or options back on.
For Friends and Chat
If CPU use tracks Friends and Chat, test disabling animated avatars and frames in Steam’s interface settings. This removes those animations, and user reports do not establish that switching them off will fix every WebHelper issue.

For an in-game spike
If the load appears only while playing a particular game, test disabling the Steam Overlay for that game before changing the global Overlay setting. The game will lose Steam Overlay features while the setting is off. Restore it if the comparison shows no benefit.
Why -no-browser is not a normal fix
Do not rely on the -no-browser launch option as a supported way to reduce CPU use. In a December 8, 2022 Steam Client Beta forum post, Valve representative Programmer Joe said support for -noreactlogin and -no-browser was ending. Valve said -no-browser disables steamwebhelper and most of Steam’s interface, including the Store, Community, Library, Friends list, and Chat; it expected essentially all of the client to require browser support. Do not blame a Windows update without evidence
A timing coincidence between a Windows update and high CPU use does not establish that the update caused it. Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 known-issues page did not list Steam or WebHelper among the issues displayed, while Valve’s cited remedy was a Steam client re-release. This does not rule out every driver, software, or operating-system interaction; it means the available evidence does not justify uninstalling a Windows update solely because the symptom appeared afterward. Choose fixes based on the evidence and the trade-off
| Action | Evidence and when it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Update Steam | Official fix for one reported case involving Library events in the September 2026 re-release. | Requires a client update and restart; it may not address a different trigger. |
| Test GPU rendering or video decoding options | Reversible diagnostic tests when a web view or video-heavy content appears associated with CPU use; community outcomes differ. | Rendering or video behavior may change; restore the options if there is no improvement. |
| Disable animated avatars or frames | Relevant to test when the load tracks Friends and Chat; outcomes are not guaranteed. | Removes the animations. |
| Disable Overlay for one game | Relevant to test when the load tracks that game session; reports do not establish a guaranteed result. | Steam Overlay features are unavailable for that game while disabled. |
Use -no-browser |
Not a supported routine fix; Valve said support was ending. | Disables WebHelper and major parts of Steam’s interface. |
