A wrong clock can make a valid website certificate look expired or not yet valid. If the time is already correct, the warning may point to the website’s certificate, a managed network, or a protocol mismatch—not a clock problem.
Why an incorrect clock can trigger an SSL warning
When a browser checks a secure connection, it compares the website certificate’s validity period with the device’s current time. If the device clock is far ahead or behind, a certificate that is valid now can appear expired or not yet valid. Chrome identifies an inaccurate device clock as a possible cause of NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID; Firefox also lists expired-certificate, not-yet-valid-certificate, and OCSP time errors as clues to investigate. Mozilla explains the time-related warnings and fixes, and Google documents Chrome’s certificate warnings.

A warning such as Firefox’s “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead” is not proof that the clock is wrong. Read the exact error details before choosing a fix. Certificate checks protect the connection, so do not bypass the warning to reach a site when you have not established that it is safe.

Check the exact error before changing settings
- “Your clock is behind,” “Your clock is ahead,” or
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID: Check the device date, time, and time zone first. - Firefox warning: Open Advanced details and look for certificate expired/not-yet-valid or OCSP time-related codes. Compare the time Firefox reports with a trusted local clock.
- Certificate name or trust error: The issue may involve the site certificate or a managed proxy rather than the device clock.
- SSL protocol or cipher mismatch: This is a separate compatibility problem; changing the clock is not a general fix.
For the meaning of browser warning labels, see Chrome Help and Mozilla Support.

Correct and synchronize your device’s date and time
Check all three values: calendar date, clock time, and time zone. A correct time paired with the wrong time zone can still leave the device’s actual time incorrect.
Windows
- Open Date and time settings from Windows Search or Settings.
- Check that the time zone matches your location and that automatic time settings are enabled if available.
- Select Sync now if the option is available, then retry the page.
- If synchronization fails or is disabled, set the date, time, and time zone manually. On a work- or school-managed device, ask IT if these controls are restricted rather than overriding organization policy.
Mozilla describes these Windows checks in its time-error troubleshooting guidance.

macOS
Open the system’s Date & Time settings and confirm the date, time, and time zone. Mozilla’s documented path uses Apple menu > System Preferences > Date & Time; if automatic date and time needs to be disabled, enter the correct values and save. Labels and the precise route vary across macOS releases, so look for the Date & Time destination in your version’s system settings. Mozilla’s instructions use the older System Preferences wording.

Use the warning’s scope to identify what needs fixing
| What you observe | Likely issue | Next step |
|---|---|---|
Clock-ahead/behind warning or NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID, and the displayed date, time, or time zone is wrong |
Local device clock | Correct and synchronize the date, time, and time zone, then retry. Mozilla; Google. |
| Clock and time zone are correct; the certificate warning appears only on one site | The site certificate may be expired or misconfigured | Contact the website owner. Mozilla. |
| Work or school device/network, HTTPS inspection, or a trust-authority warning | Managed proxy or certificate configuration | Contact the network administrator. Do not install a proxy certificate independently. Google. |
| SSL version, protocol, or cipher mismatch wording | Server/browser protocol compatibility | Contact the site or service administrator; correcting the clock alone is not an established fix. DigiCert. |
| The clock returns to the wrong value after each boot | Possible VM, live-system, or dual-boot synchronization issue; in a narrower Windows case, Secure Time Seeding | Configure time synchronization and investigate the specific system. For managed Windows devices, follow Microsoft’s supported troubleshooting guidance. Mozilla; Microsoft. |
If the clock keeps resetting
Live USB, virtual machine, or dual boot
Some startup configurations can leave the system clock wrong after boot. Configure automatic time synchronization for the environment or correct the clock after startup. Mozilla notes these cases in its secure-site time troubleshooting guidance.

Unusual Windows Secure Time Seeding case
Microsoft documents a less common issue affecting Windows 10 and later: under particular network conditions with no outgoing SSL traffic, stale stored data can cause the clock to reset to an incorrect earlier time after a restart. Reconnecting to the internet is one correction described by Microsoft. Its article also gives advanced administrator workarounds; do not start with registry changes or disable Secure Time Seeding as an ordinary user fix. Microsoft cautions that a disabled setting remains disabled after an upgrade until it is re-enabled. See Microsoft’s Secure Time Seeding guidance for the scenario and supported options.

When the time is correct but the warning remains
Only one website fails
The website may have an expired or misconfigured certificate, or another certificate problem. Contact the site owner; changing your clock to get past a certificate warning does not repair the site. A work or school network is involved
Some managed networks inspect HTTPS connections through a proxy. If the browser reports a trust problem on such a network, ask the administrator to check its proxy and certificate configuration. Google warns that installing a proxy certificate without administrator guidance can create a security risk: Chrome Help.
The message names a protocol or cipher mismatch
Protocol and cipher mismatch errors point to compatibility between the browser and server configuration, including deprecated or unsupported protocols and ciphers. The site or service administrator generally needs to address that configuration; a device-clock correction is not a general solution. See DigiCert’s explanation of certificate and protocol errors.
How common are clock-related certificate warnings?
A 2017 Google Research paper attributed an incorrect system clock to 33.5% of analyzed Windows Chrome certificate-warning reports, 8.71% of Mac OS reports, 1.72% of ChromeOS reports, and 8.46% of Android reports. These are proportions within that paper’s platform-specific sample of Chrome certificate-warning reports—not current rates for all devices, all browsers, or all internet users.
