If Spotify says it is offline while Windows appears connected, first turn off Spotify’s Offline Mode, then test whether the problem affects other apps, Spotify’s web player, or only the Windows desktop app. That quick diagnosis helps avoid reinstalling Spotify or resetting Windows networking when the real cause is a proxy, VPN, firewall rule, or restricted Wi-Fi network.
First, identify what is failing
Messages such as “You’re currently offline,” “No internet connection,” and “Something went wrong” do not identify the cause by themselves. Nor do grayed-out tracks: Spotify says unavailable content can appear grayed out when Offline Mode is on. Use the checks below before changing network settings.
| What you find | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| No websites or internet-dependent apps work on this PC | Check the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, router, captive portal, and Windows network troubleshooting. |
| Websites work, but the Spotify desktop app does not | Check Offline Mode, VPN and proxy settings, firewall or security software, then the Spotify installation. |
| Spotify’s web player and desktop app both fail on one network | Investigate that network’s restrictions, DNS filtering, router settings, or a service problem. |
| Spotify works on a phone using cellular data but not on the PC’s Wi-Fi | The PC or Wi-Fi network is the likely source; test the PC on a hotspot to separate them. |
| Spotify works on a hotspot but not on the usual Wi-Fi | Check for a captive portal, workplace or school restrictions, router controls, DNS filtering, or a temporary routing problem. |
| Several desktop apps fail while browsing works | Check for a VPN, proxy, endpoint security filter, or Windows network-stack problem. |
| Spotify fails across devices and networks, or only one account has trouble | Check Spotify’s status channels and consider an account or regional issue rather than a Windows connection problem. |
A browser working does not prove the desktop app can connect: firewall rules, proxies, VPNs, and managed network policies can affect apps differently. Spotify recommends checking Offline Mode, other websites and apps, the network, and firewall exceptions. (Spotify offline troubleshooting; Microsoft Wi-Fi troubleshooting)
Turn off Spotify Offline Mode
- Open Spotify for Windows.
- Click the three-dot menu at the top, then choose File.
- If Offline Mode is selected, click it to turn it off.
Try loading a playlist or searching again. If you cannot log in because the app is offline, Spotify says email-and-password login may still be available when Facebook or Apple login is unavailable in Offline Mode; this is not a fix for every login problem. Restart Spotify, Windows, and the connection
- Quit Spotify and reopen it. Closing its window may leave it running in the notification area; if it will not close, open Task Manager, select Spotify, and choose End task.
- Restart Windows, then test Spotify again.
- If Wi-Fi is involved, turn Wi-Fi off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Reconnect to the network if needed.
- If other devices also have connection trouble, restart the router. This briefly disconnects all devices using it.
Spotify recommends restarting the app and checking the Wi-Fi and router connection as basic troubleshooting. (Spotify offline troubleshooting)
Check VPN, proxy, and network filters
Test without a VPN
Disconnect the VPN temporarily, quit Spotify, reopen it, and test. If Spotify connects, the VPN route, server, or its network filter may be involved. Try a different VPN server or ask the VPN provider for help rather than leaving the VPN disabled if you rely on it for work or security.
Check Windows proxy settings
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.
If you did not intentionally configure a proxy, check whether Use a proxy server is enabled; turn it off for a test, then retry Spotify. Do not change settings managed by your employer or school without asking the administrator. Microsoft includes proxy settings among its connection troubleshooting checks. (Microsoft proxy and connection troubleshooting)
Antivirus web shields, parental controls, DNS filters, and corporate endpoint-management tools can also filter app traffic. If you test by pausing a security product’s network protection, do so briefly and restore it afterward. If that test changes the result, configure a narrow Spotify-specific exception through the product’s documented controls.

Allow Spotify through the firewall
- Search Windows for Allow an app through Windows Firewall and open the result.
- Select Change settings. Approve the prompt if Windows requests permission.
- Check whether Spotify is allowed for the network type you use. If it is not listed, choose Allow another app and browse to Spotify’s executable.
- Apply the change and test Spotify.
The executable location differs between the Microsoft Store version and the installer downloaded from Spotify, so do not guess a path or allow every file named “Spotify.” A third-party firewall may control traffic instead of Windows Defender Firewall, and a work or school administrator may need to make the change. Spotify recommends checking firewall exceptions. (Spotify offline troubleshooting)
Check the network and Windows connection
Test another route to the internet
Open a normal website and Spotify’s web player, then, if possible, test the Windows PC on Ethernet, another Wi-Fi band, or a phone hotspot. If the network has a sign-in page—for example, hotel, airport, or public Wi-Fi—open a browser and complete that captive-portal sign-in first. Microsoft notes that routers may offer separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks; testing the alternate band can help isolate a Wi-Fi issue. (Microsoft Wi-Fi connection guidance)
If Spotify works on a hotspot but not on work, school, hotel, or public Wi-Fi, ask the network administrator about access rather than trying to bypass its controls. Spotify notes that shared networks may restrict access to some services. (Spotify offline troubleshooting)
Inspect the active adapter’s address
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
Under the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, inspect IPv4 Address, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers. An IPv4 address beginning with 169.254. can indicate that Windows did not obtain an address from the router. That points to the PC-router connection, not specifically to Spotify. Do not change DNS servers blindly: DNS changes cannot fix a disabled adapter, firewall block, captive portal, or Spotify outage. (Microsoft IP-address troubleshooting)

Run Windows’ network troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and search for network or internet troubleshooting, then follow its prompts. On some Windows 10 builds, the troubleshooter may be under Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network troubleshooter. It diagnoses Windows connectivity; it does not specifically repair Spotify. (Microsoft Wi-Fi troubleshooting)
Reset Windows networking components
Use these commands if Windows connectivity is malfunctioning or several apps are affected, not as the first response to a Spotify-only failure. You need an administrator account; the commands reset network components and renew the PC’s network lease.
- Search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands in order, waiting for each to finish:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
- Restart the PC, reconnect if needed, and test Spotify.
netsh winsock resetresets the Winsock catalog used by apps for network communication.netsh int ip resetresets TCP/IP configuration.ipconfig /releaseandipconfig /renewrelease and request a DHCP address.ipconfig /flushdnsclears cached DNS records.
Microsoft recommends this sequence for Windows connection troubleshooting. If renewing the address fails, investigate the connection between Windows and the router. (Microsoft network commands; Microsoft Wi-Fi troubleshooting)
Update Spotify and Windows
Update Spotify
In Spotify, click your profile picture and select Update Spotify now if the option appears. Spotify says a blue dot beside the profile picture signals an available desktop update. (Spotify updating guidance)

Check Windows Update
Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, then restart if prompted. Spotify’s reinstall guidance lists Windows 10 and newer, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; the Spotify listing does not extend Microsoft’s Windows support period. (Spotify Windows requirements; Microsoft Ethernet and Windows 10 support guidance)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reinstall Spotify if the desktop app alone remains broken
- Close Spotify.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & Features.
- Select Spotify, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Install Spotify again from the Microsoft Store or directly from Spotify, then sign in and test.
Spotify documents this Windows reinstall route for Windows 10 and newer. Reinstalling removes offline downloads, which you must download again. If the Microsoft Store version still fails, trying the official direct installer—or the reverse—is a useful diagnostic for a packaging-specific issue, not a guaranteed fix. (Spotify reinstall instructions)
Use Network reset only after the other checks
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters and restores default settings after Windows restarts. It can require VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches to be reconfigured, and known networks may change to a Public profile. Record Wi-Fi passwords, custom DNS values, VPN settings, and virtual-adapter configuration before proceeding. (Microsoft Network reset guidance; Microsoft Ethernet troubleshooting)
- Windows 11: Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
- Windows 10: Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.
Select Reset now, confirm, and let Windows restart. Reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward and reinstall or reconfigure affected networking software if needed.

When the issue may be Spotify, your account, or the network owner
Spotify directs users to @SpotifyStatus and its Community Ongoing Issues board for known problems. Check those channels for a current incident; this guide does not establish Spotify’s live service status.
If the problem is limited to a work, school, or public network, the administrator may be restricting streaming services. If a Spotify account is being used abroad, Spotify says playback may be unavailable after more than 14 days abroad until account settings are changed; that is an account or regional issue, not proof of a Windows network fault. (Spotify playback troubleshooting)
If no device or network can play Spotify, contact Spotify support after checking its status channels. If only one home network fails, contact its administrator or ISP; if Windows cannot connect reliably even on other networks, consult the PC or network-adapter manufacturer.
