Twitter is now called X, and a page that will not load can point to anything from an X service problem to a browser extension or account-specific issue. Check X’s status first, then use the tests below to narrow down the cause before clearing data or reinstalling the app.

Quick checks: Open x.com directly, hard-refresh the page, try a private window, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, and temporarily turn off a VPN. If you use the app, restart the device and check for updates. These comparisons help identify the problem before you take steps that sign you out or erase mobile drafts.

First, identify what is failing

  • X will not open at all: Check for an outage, connection problem, VPN or network filtering, or a browser issue.
  • The page opens but stays blank or spins: Stale site data, blocked scripts, an extension, an unsupported browser, or a failed X request may be responsible.
  • Only one profile, post, image, or video fails: The item may be unavailable, restricted, or affected by a media-loading problem rather than a general site failure.
  • X works when signed out but not when signed in: Check the browser session or account access.
  • The website works but the app does not, or vice versa: Troubleshoot the failing version separately; a working website does not prove the app is healthy.
  • X works in a private window: Focus on normal-window cookies, site data, and extensions.

Check whether X is down

Visit X’s official status page before resetting your browser or app. X links to its status page from its Help Center. You can also open an unrelated website and ask someone using a different device whether X loads for them. Third-party outage reports can offer clues, but the official status page is the authoritative first check. If an outage is reported, wait for service to recover instead of repeatedly clearing data or reinstalling the app.

Test the connection before changing settings

Reload X and check whether other websites open. Then compare Wi-Fi with cellular data, if available. If X works on cellular but not Wi-Fi, the difference points toward the Wi-Fi network, router, DNS, firewall, filtering, or network policy; it does not by itself identify which one. A work, school, hotel, or public network may block social media or require a captive-portal sign-in in a browser.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • On public Wi-Fi, complete any network sign-in page first.
  • If only your Wi-Fi connection fails, restart the router and reconnect to the network. On a managed network, ask its administrator whether X is blocked.
  • Check that your device’s date, time, and time zone are correct, especially if login or secure-connection errors appear.
  • Do not change DNS as a first step. It may not help, and a different DNS service can conflict with privacy needs or a managed network.

Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy

Disconnect from the VPN or proxy, reload X, and then reconnect when you finish testing. If X works only with the VPN off, its endpoint, DNS handling, filtering, or IP reputation may be affecting the connection. X recommends testing without a VPN; if that resolves the problem, contact the VPN provider rather than changing account settings (X web troubleshooting; Android app troubleshooting). Turning off a VPN changes your network path and privacy protection, so treat it as a brief diagnostic test.

Use a private window to test your browser

Open X in a private-browsing window, then go directly to x.com rather than relying on an old bookmark.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Chrome or Edge: open a new Incognito or InPrivate window.
  • Firefox: open a New Private Window.
  • Safari: open a Private window.

If X works there, the normal browser profile is the likely difference. Test extensions and then clear X-specific site data. If X still fails privately, check the network, VPN, browser support, service status, or whether the issue is tied to the account.

Update or switch browsers

Try the latest version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. X says it supports recent versions from the past year of these browsers and browsers based on Chromium or WebKit, including Opera and Samsung Internet. Its browser guidance warns that older or unsupported browsers, as well as extensions that modify the user-agent string, may prevent X from working correctly (X supported browsers). Browser support changes, so use an up-to-date browser rather than relying on a fixed version number.

Disable extensions, then clear X site data

Test extensions one at a time

Temporarily turn off ad blockers, script blockers, privacy or anti-tracking tools, cookie managers, VPN extensions, and page-appearance or user-agent modifiers. Reload X after each change. If the page starts working, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict; you do not need to uninstall them. X recommends testing with add-ons and ad-blocking software disabled (X web troubleshooting).

Remove only X’s stored data

In your browser’s site-data settings, search for x.com and delete its cookies and cached files. If present, remove twitter.com site data too. Then reopen the browser and sign in again. This is more targeted than clearing all browser history and data, but it can still sign you out and remove site preferences. X uses cookies for authentication, functionality, and preferences; blocking them can interfere with the service or login (X cookies and local storage).

Check JavaScript and cookie permissions

If the page is blank, buttons never appear, or login does not complete, confirm that JavaScript is enabled and cookies are allowed for X. Temporarily relax strict tracking or content-blocking settings for the site and test again without privacy extensions. X’s mobile-login guidance also advises checking JavaScript (X mobile login help).

Log out and back in only if the problem looks session-related

If X loads but your signed-in session fails, log out and back in after checking that you can access your login method. On the web, X says drafts are available under Unsent posts → Drafts in the compose box. Mobile is different: X warns that logging out or removing an account can clear unsent drafts, so save or copy anything important first. If login verification is enabled, keep a backup code available before changing app account state. See X’s web troubleshooting, Android guidance, and iOS guidance.

Fix the X app on Android

  1. Restart the phone and test both Wi-Fi and mobile data. Temporarily disable a VPN if one is active.
  2. Update X and Android using the update options available on your device.
  3. If the app still fails, open Settings → Apps → X → Storage → Clear data. Android menus vary by manufacturer and OS version. X says clearing app data resets notification and synchronization settings but does not remove account information; check the wording on your device before confirming.
  4. Log out and back in only after saving drafts and securing any needed login-verification backup code.
  5. If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall X, then sign in again.

X’s Android instructions cover restarting, connection checks, clearing app data, signing out, and reinstalling (X Android app troubleshooting). They also warn that logging out clears drafts. The app’s requirements and availability can change, so install the latest version offered for your device rather than relying on an old compatibility note.

Fix the X app on iPhone or iPad

  1. Restart the device, check Wi-Fi and cellular data, and briefly test without a VPN.
  2. Update iOS and X when updates are available for your device.
  3. If the app still fails, remove and re-add the account or delete and reinstall the app, following X’s current iOS guidance.
  4. Before removing the account or reinstalling, save drafts and any login-verification backup code. X warns that logging out or removing the account clears unsent drafts.

X says devices running iOS 13.7 or lower may not receive newer app versions; update the operating system if the device supports it. For login errors, set date, time, and time zone to update automatically. If a third-party keyboard seems involved, test with the device’s default keyboard (X iPhone and iPad troubleshooting).

If X is open in a mobile browser

For X in a phone browser, clear that browser’s cache and cookies, confirm JavaScript and cookies are allowed, and try another mobile browser or network. Temporarily turn off a VPN and restart the phone if needed. X also recommends turning the phone off for five minutes as a connection-reset step; that is X’s suggested troubleshooting interval, not a requirement established for every phone (X mobile-browser troubleshooting).

When to contact X Support

Use X’s support forms if the issue follows one account across devices and networks, you cannot complete login or verification, or X identifies the account as locked or suspended. Choose the form that matches the problem, such as account access or locked/suspended accounts. Include the device, browser or app version, network type, exact error text, approximate time it began, and the checks you have already tried. If only a single network fails, contact its administrator or provider; if only a VPN connection fails, contact the VPN provider.
