The “Move iPhone a little lower” message means Face ID cannot obtain a usable view of your face during its scan. It is often caused by positioning, dirt, a case, screen protector, lighting or a face covering. If the prompt keeps alternating between “lower” and “higher” after those checks, particularly after a drop, liquid exposure or screen repair, a TrueDepth hardware fault becomes more likely and needs a professional diagnostic.
What the message means
Face ID enrollment uses the iPhone’s TrueDepth system to map your face; it is not just taking a normal selfie. Apple instructs you to keep your face within the frame and gently move your head in a circle during setup. The lower-or-higher prompt means the system does not currently have a usable capture position, but it does not prove that you are holding the phone at the wrong height.
The same instruction can appear when the sensor area is obstructed, the phone is tilted, glare interferes with the scan, your face is covered or the TrueDepth hardware is malfunctioning. A single failed unlock is much less diagnostic: iOS can require the passcode after a restart and other security events. Inability to complete Face ID enrollment or re-enrollment is the stronger warning sign.
Try these fixes in order
1. Clear the sensor view
- Wipe the notch or Dynamic Island area with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Remove fingerprints, makeup, dust and dried liquid from the whole sensor region.
- Temporarily remove the case.
- Test without a screen protector if it reaches the front sensors or has a misaligned cutout, crack, cloudiness, adhesive or residue.
- Remove sunglasses, masks, hats and anything else covering your eyes, nose or mouth.
Do not put liquid directly on the phone, poke into the notch, or tap or strike the top edge. Tapping is an anecdotal suggestion, not an Apple-approved repair, and can worsen physical damage.

2. Reposition the phone, not just your head
- Sit or stand facing the iPhone and hold it upright in portrait orientation.
- Start with the phone roughly level with your face and keep your entire face in the on-screen frame.
- Move the phone slowly in the requested direction. If the prompt switches between lower and higher, make very small, level adjustments rather than large movements.
- Stay far enough away that your face never leaves the frame.
- When the circular scan begins, gently turn your head instead of swinging the phone rapidly.
Apple’s setup instructions and accessibility option are documented in its Face ID guide. If you cannot perform the full head movement, choose Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up Face ID > Get Started > Accessibility Options.
3. Change the environment
Try again in evenly lit indoor conditions. Avoid direct sunlight aimed at the front sensors, strong backlighting, reflective glare, fog, condensation and a wet screen. A user report describes Face ID working indoors but failing outdoors in bright overhead sunlight; treat that as a possible environmental failure mode, not proof that sunlight is the cause. If possible, test in another room.
4. Restart and update iOS
Restart the iPhone, then install any available iOS update through Settings > General > Software Update. These are low-risk software checks. An update may correct a temporary software problem, but it cannot repair damaged TrueDepth hardware; reports of the prompt continuing after an update illustrate that distinction (MacRumors discussion).

Reset Face ID and enroll again
After checking positioning and obstructions, reset the stored enrollment:

- Tap Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- Tap Set Up Face ID and repeat the scan.
This deletes the saved facial enrollment; it does not repair a failed sensor. If enrollment still loops, repeating the reset is unlikely to help.
Optional: Reset All Settings
As a later software-only step, you can use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. It does not erase photos or apps, but it resets system preferences and can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, the keyboard dictionary, Home Screen arrangement, privacy and location settings, and Apple Pay cards, as described in an Apple Community response. It is not a likely remedy for physical TrueDepth damage, so back up first and use it only when the inconvenience is acceptable.

When a TrueDepth hardware problem is more likely
The message alone cannot identify a failed component. Hardware becomes more plausible when several of these apply:
- Face ID worked previously and stopped suddenly.
- The lower/higher prompt cycles indefinitely after the case, protector and environmental checks.
- The iPhone was dropped, bent, exposed to liquid or opened for repair.
- A display or front-sensor assembly was recently replaced.
- Animoji or Memoji tracking and other depth-related features also fail.
- The phone eventually reports “Face ID is not available.”
Independent repair documentation associates this pattern with faults involving the TrueDepth assembly, such as the dot projector, flood illuminator or related flex and circuitry (iFixit; REWA). Those sources do not establish which part has failed in your phone, and they are not a substitute for Apple’s diagnostic.
Why the selfie camera can still work
A working front-facing camera does not prove that Face ID is healthy. The ordinary RGB camera is only one part of the TrueDepth system; Face ID also depends on infrared and depth-sensing components. An iFixit repair example documents normal front-camera operation alongside a Face ID-related depth failure (PDF). Use selfie operation as a separate camera test, not as an all-clear.

When to contact Apple or a qualified provider
- Back up the iPhone.
- Do not erase the device solely to treat this symptom unless Apple Support specifically advises it.
- Contact Apple repair support or use an Apple Authorized Service Provider locator.
- Report the exact behavior: enrollment repeatedly alternates between “Move iPhone a little lower” and “Move iPhone a little higher.”
- Disclose any display, front-camera, liquid or third-party repair history and request a TrueDepth/Face ID diagnostic before authorizing unrelated work.
Do not buy generic “Face ID repair” software, assume a cheap front-camera replacement will restore biometrics, or attempt a DIY TrueDepth-module swap. Face ID components are security-paired and ordinary part swapping may leave Face ID unavailable. Coverage and service estimates depend on the model, country, warranty and AppleCare status; check Apple’s current estimate rather than relying on a generic price.

No. It is a positioning instruction, but dirt, accessories, glare, face coverings and TrueDepth faults can produce the same prompt.

Can an iOS update repair Face ID?
It can resolve a software problem, but it cannot repair damaged TrueDepth hardware. Continued enrollment failure after updating still warrants diagnosis.
Is it safe to replace the front camera myself?
No generic replacement is guaranteed to restore Face ID. Paired, security-sensitive components require qualified service and an appropriate diagnostic.
