If a Streamlabs Alert Box sound will not play, first check whether the problem is the audio file or the alert’s audio routing. Streamlabs lists MP3, OGG, and WAV as supported Alert Box formats; for a troublesome MP3, its older guidance recommends converting it to OGG. Save the alert settings and test again, then check mute, monitoring, track selection, and OBS routing if it is still silent.
First identify which sound is missing
The file-format advice here applies to uploaded sounds used by Streamlabs Alert Box—for example, an alert sound that should play when an event occurs. If game, microphone, or other desktop audio is missing, that is a capture or routing issue, not necessarily a problem with an uploaded sound file.

A useful first check is to test the alert in Streamlabs. If other audio works but one alert does not, start with that alert’s file and settings. If alert audio or desktop audio is broadly missing, check mute and routing settings instead.

Check the sound file and its format

Streamlabs’ “Sound files not working” article, last updated December 17, 2021, recommends converting a problematic MP3 to OGG as a workaround for compatibility issues with some streaming software: Sound files not working. The article says Streamlabs should convert a newly uploaded file to OGG when the upload completes. Re-upload the file and wait for that process to finish before testing. The documentation does not specify codec, sample-rate, bitrate, duration, or file-size requirements, so there is no supported basis here for prescribing particular values.
Save the alert settings and run a test
- Open the Alert Box settings for the alert that is not playing.
- Confirm the intended sound file is selected and that its upload has completed.
- Save the settings.
- Use the Alert Box test controls or Streamlabs Desktop’s test widgets to trigger a test alert. This checks the configured alert path in the software before you go live.
If the test plays, the file and alert path are working in that test. If it remains silent, continue with the audio checks below.

Check mute, monitoring, tracks, and OBS routing
Streamlabs’ audio troubleshooting guide identifies several settings that can make alert sound seem missing even when the alert is configured: Streamlabs Audio Setup Guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Mute state: Check whether the recent-events sound control is muted.
- Monitoring device: Confirm the alert is being monitored on the device you are actually listening to. If the monitoring device differs from the desktop audio device, Streamlabs’ guidance is to select “Monitor and Output.”
- Audio track: Check the alert’s selected audio track and ensure it is included in the output where you expect to hear it.
- OBS routing: If the alert is meant to be heard through OBS, check whether “Route Audio to OBS” is enabled where relevant.
Menu wording and control placement can vary between software versions. Focus on the settings’ functions if the exact label differs in your installation.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If desktop or system audio is missing
Do not apply desktop-audio capture requirements to an uploaded Alert Box sound. Streamlabs’ guidance distinguishes the operating systems: Windows Desktop can capture microphone and system audio directly, while macOS does not natively allow direct desktop-audio capture and needs a virtual audio driver. See the desktop audio troubleshooting guide for that separate capture issue.
If the sound repeats or echoes
A repeated sound may be caused by duplicate sources or windows rather than by the audio file. Streamlabs’ echo guidance suggests closing extra pop-out windows and checking browser-source behavior; if necessary, remove and recreate the source. Some instructions use older OBS or XSplit menu labels, so the exact wording may differ in current software: Streamlabs echo troubleshooting.

Common symptoms and next steps
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| One uploaded MP3 fails, but other audio works | Convert it to OGG, re-upload, wait for processing, save, and test the alert. |
| The alert test is silent for a supported file | Check mute state, monitoring device, selected audio track, and OBS routing. |
| Game or system audio is missing | Check desktop-audio capture for your operating system; macOS may require a virtual audio driver. |
| The sound plays more than once or echoes | Look for duplicate pop-out windows or browser sources; remove and recreate a source if needed. |
If converting, testing, and checking routing do not resolve the issue, the documented guidance does not establish one definitive cause. Contact Streamlabs Support with your operating system, Streamlabs product and version, the affected alert, and what happened during the test.
