For one 720p YouTube live stream, plan for about 8 Mbps of sustained upload bandwidth available to the streaming encoder. If the connection is shared or varies during the day, aim for 10 Mbps or more. These are practical planning targets—not official YouTube minimums or guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.

Why 8 Mbps is a sensible target

YouTube recommends a 6 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at both 30 and 60 frames per second. It also recommends leaving 20% room between the stream bitrate and the upload capacity available to the encoder. Applying that margin gives 7.5 Mbps (6 ÷ 0.8), which rounds up to an approximately 8 Mbps planning floor.

The relevant figure is available upload bandwidth, not download speed or the headline speed advertised for an internet plan. Other devices and network traffic can reduce what reaches the encoder. On a busy or inconsistent connection, 10 Mbps or more provides additional headroom, but no speed target alone guarantees a stable 24/7 stream.

Set the stream bitrate and encoder correctly

Use YouTube’s 720p recommendation

Set the video bitrate to 6 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps, following YouTube’s current encoder table. The table lists that recommendation across its H.264 and AV1/H.265 columns. The encoder must support the configuration you choose.

Use the recommended transmission settings

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS, as supported by your encoder and YouTube setup.
  • Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.

Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring the encoder; supported options and interface labels can vary by encoder.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Measure the connection you will actually stream over

  1. Connect the streaming computer by Ethernet if practical. YouTube recommends a wired Ethernet connection for streaming from a computer. It can make the path more reliable than Wi-Fi, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP. See YouTube’s filming tips for live streaming.
  2. Measure sustained upload at the time and place of the stream. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. A result from another time, device, or network load may not reflect the bandwidth available to the encoder during the broadcast.
  3. Test an unlisted stream with representative content. Include the expected audio and cartoon movement rather than testing with a static image or silence. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the connection remains stable.
  4. Repeat the test under realistic household or workplace load. Shared networks can limit an individual connection. Check whether the available upload remains comfortably above the stream’s 6 Mbps bitrate while other expected traffic is active.

YouTube notes that network interruptions can disrupt a live stream; testing and monitoring help reveal issues but do not prove that equipment or an ISP will stay online continuously. Its encoder guidance also explains that YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so the creator does not need to send a separate feed for every playback quality.

Does 24/7 cartoon streaming need a different speed?

The reviewed YouTube encoder and network guidance specifies no separate bitrate for cartoons or for 24/7 operation. For the upload-capacity question, use the same 720p recommendation and headroom calculation: 6 Mbps ingest bitrate, with about 8 Mbps available upload as a practical floor.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Continuous operation adds a separate uptime challenge. A speed test cannot establish that the computer, router, power, or internet service will remain available around the clock. Validate the full setup over time and check the ISP’s terms and reliability for your location. YouTube’s advice to target upload speed 1.5 to 2 times the combined bitrate applies to simulstreaming across platforms; it is not a mandatory rule for a single YouTube stream. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.

Troubleshoot a stream that buffers or loses health

  • Measured upload is close to 6 Mbps: There is little room for normal variation or competing traffic. Test again under actual load; if sustained upload remains low, reduce competing network use or compare local internet plans with more upload capacity.
  • Speed test looks adequate, but stream health is poor: The test may not reflect conditions during the broadcast. Repeat it on the streaming computer and same network path at the relevant time, then test with the real audio and moving video.
  • Wi-Fi performance varies: Try Ethernet between the streaming computer and router. This can improve the local connection path but does not change the ISP’s available bandwidth.
  • Stream drops during a network interruption: Check the router, internet connection, and encoder’s reconnect behavior, then run another unlisted test. Network disruption can break a live stream; a bandwidth figure is not a continuity guarantee.
  • Viewers report different playback quality: YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats. That does not remove the need to send a stable source stream at the chosen bitrate.
