How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi Speeds After Upgrading Your Router

Compare modem, wired-router, and near-router Wi-Fi speeds to pinpoint whether a slowdown comes from the ISP, router link, wireless conditions, or placement.

How to fix slow Wi-Fi speeds after upgrading your router starts with finding where the slowdown occurs—not assuming the new router is faulty. Compare a computer connected directly to the modem, a wired connection through the router, and Wi-Fi near the router. Those results can help distinguish an ISP or modem issue from a router, cable, or wireless problem.

1. Find out whether the slowdown is before or after the router

Use the same computer for each test where practical, and compare download and upload results under similar conditions. The FCC explains that speed tests measure both in Mbps and advises contacting your ISP when results are slower than expected: FCC Consumer Guide.

  1. Test directly from the modem. Follow your ISP’s instructions for connecting a computer to the modem and for reconnecting the router afterward. If this result is already slow, the problem may be the modem or ISP service rather than Wi-Fi. Ask the ISP about outages or service issues. TP-Link also recommends testing through the modem before blaming the router: TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide.
  2. Test through the router by Ethernet. Connect the computer to a router LAN port with an Ethernet cable and run the test again. If the modem test is good but this wired test is slow, investigate the router’s setup or restart state and the cable between the modem and router.
  3. Test Wi-Fi near the router. Disconnect Ethernet, connect the same computer to Wi-Fi, and test close to the router with as few walls or other obstructions as possible. If wired performance is good but this result is slow, focus on Wi-Fi conditions, settings, or the device’s wireless capability.
What you observe Where to investigate Next step
Slow speed directly from the modem ISP service or modem Repeat the test as the ISP directs, then ask about service or outage conditions. TP-Link; FCC
Modem test is good, but wired speed through the router is slow Router setup, restart state, or modem-to-router cable Restart the modem and router, then inspect or swap the connecting cable. TP-Link
Wired speed is good, but Wi-Fi is slow near the router Wireless settings, interference, or device capability Check the Wi-Fi band, client capability, and model-specific router settings. Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi Help; TP-Link
Wi-Fi is poor mainly in distant rooms Router placement, barriers, or mesh coverage Try a more open central router location; if you use mesh, check the point’s placement and link to the router. Google Fiber Help

2. If the wired router connection is slow, check the link and restart

When the direct-modem result is satisfactory but Ethernet through the router is not, restart the modem and router and retest. Also inspect the Ethernet cable joining them. TP-Link recommends swapping this cable and specifies Cat6 or better: TP-Link troubleshooting guidance. A Cat6 cable is a diagnostic replacement for a potentially faulty or limiting wired link; replacing it is not a general way to boost Wi-Fi.

3. If only Wi-Fi is slow, test the wireless conditions

Run the near-router test with the same device used for the wired comparison. Wi-Fi results can differ because of distance, walls and other building materials, interference, the frequency band in use, and the Wi-Fi capabilities of the client device. Google’s troubleshooting guidance covers these factors: Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi Help.

  • Try another Wi-Fi-capable device near the router. If its result differs substantially, the original client’s capabilities or settings may be relevant.
  • Check which band the device is using and compare results under consistent conditions. Available bands and controls depend on the router and client.
  • For a close-range slowdown, consult the official guide for your router model before changing channel, channel width, Quality of Service (QoS), or parental-control settings. TP-Link lists these among possible checks, but the appropriate choices depend on the model and local wireless environment: TP-Link’s guide.

4. Improve router and mesh placement for weak rooms

If Wi-Fi is acceptable near the router but weak in particular rooms, placement and obstructions are more likely areas to investigate than the internet plan. Put the router in an open, central location rather than on the floor, inside a cabinet, or in a closet. Walls and other building materials can weaken the signal.

For a wireless mesh extender, Google Fiber advises placing it about halfway between the router and the area needing coverage, then checking that it still has a good connection to the router: Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi guidance. An extender placed inside the dead zone may itself have a weak link, so test its connection rather than assuming another mesh point is needed.

5. Retest before changing more settings or contacting support

  1. Restart the network, then repeat the modem, wired-router, or Wi-Fi test that exposed the problem.
  2. Keep the device and test conditions as similar as possible so the comparison is useful.
  3. If the direct-modem result remains below what you expect, contact the ISP and ask about service conditions or outages. The FCC recommends contacting the provider about low measured speeds: FCC Consumer Guide.
  4. If the modem result is good but a wired or wireless test remains poor, use the router manufacturer’s official instructions for your model and the specific connection path that failed.
