Keep it off only if the improvement is repeatable and helps your actual use. Airtime fairness is designed to manage how wireless transmission time is shared; its effect depends on the access point, connected devices and radio conditions.
What airtime fairness changes
Wi-Fi clients share radio time. A slow or distant client can occupy the network longer while transferring data, potentially affecting other clients. Airtime fairness changes how that time is shared, with the intended benefit of limiting the effect of slower devices on overall responsiveness or efficiency. NETGEAR describes its RAX5 implementation as giving Wi-Fi clients equal time, while Cisco’s enterprise guidance describes more configurable, weighted policies. Implementations are not identical across brands and products.

That does not mean the feature is inherently good or bad for every setup. Whether it helps depends on the access point’s implementation, the mix of clients, signal conditions and what you mean by “slow”: low download speed, lag, stuttering or trouble connecting are different symptoms.
Test whether the setting caused the slowdown
- Record the setup. Note the router or access-point model, firmware if available, affected band or network, client device and test location. Describe the symptom: throughput, latency, stuttering or connection failure.
- Compare wired and wireless performance, if possible. TP-Link recommends connecting a computer directly to the modem by Ethernet and comparing the result with the slow routed connection. If the direct test is also slow, the modem or internet service may be responsible rather than Wi-Fi. See TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide.
- Change only airtime fairness. Find the control in the instructions for your exact router or access point. Turn it off for the affected band or network, save or apply the change, and repeat the same test with the same client, in the same place and on the same band.
- Repeat the comparison. A consistent difference across comparable tests is more useful than a single speed-test result. Consider both the affected device’s speed and responsiveness and the experience of other devices in use at the same time.
- Restore the original setting if performance does not improve. If the symptom remains, continue with the checks below instead of changing unrelated advanced radio settings.

#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
NETGEAR RAX5
In the RAX5 manual, the path is ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings. Clear Enable AIRTIME FAIRNESS, then click Apply. This is a model-specific procedure from the NETGEAR RAX5 user manual.
NETGEAR listed access points
For the access-point models covered by its support article, NETGEAR gives the path Management > Wireless > Advanced. The article was last updated August 10, 2020, so confirm that it applies to your model and firmware before following it: NETGEAR’s airtime-fairness instructions for access points.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Other routers and access points
Look in the device’s wireless or advanced wireless settings, but rely on its own documentation for the exact label and path. Some enterprise systems expose policies such as weights and client-sharing controls rather than a simple on/off switch. Cisco’s Catalyst 9800 IOS XE 26.x air-time-fairness guide is an enterprise example, not a consumer-router procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf turning it off did not fix Wi-Fi
Check signal and placement
Test near the router or access point with as few barriers as practical. Distance, weak signal and obstructions can reduce wireless performance; disabling airtime fairness does not correct them. D-Link also identifies older client hardware as a possible factor in slow Wi-Fi. See the D-Link CWM manual.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Consider interference and channel settings
Nearby networks and other sources of interference can affect Wi-Fi. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the wireless environment, channel and channel width. Its suggested width settings are examples for TP-Link equipment, not universal recommendations for all access points or regulatory regions. Consult your own manufacturer’s guidance before changing them.
Separate a single-device problem from a network-wide one
Compare another client in the same location and on the same band. If only one device is affected, its Wi-Fi hardware, age, placement or compatibility may matter more than a setting applied to the whole access point. If several wireless clients are slow but the wired connection is fine, investigate the access point’s radio environment and configuration.

When vendor compatibility advice applies
Sonos specifically advises disabling airtime fairness on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz for connection problems involving Sonos products and the Sonos app during or after setup on Asus RT and AX series routers. That recommendation is limited to that compatibility scenario; it is not evidence that airtime fairness causes slow Wi-Fi on every Asus model or with other clients. See Sonos’ Asus RT and AX compatibility guidance.
