To move carbon quantum dots (CQDs) toward green or yellow-green emission, adjust the material’s emitting states—not simply the wavelength of the lamp used to excite it. Depending on the CQD system, emission can be influenced by the size of conjugated carbon domains, precursor and reaction conditions, oxidation, surface functionalization or passivation, and heteroatom content. No single adjustment reliably produces the same color across all CQDs. First clarify whether “UV” means ultraviolet excitation or ultraviolet-range emission: these are different things.

What “from UV to yellow-green” means

Ultraviolet (UV) light is often used to excite CQDs, and the resulting fluorescence may appear blue, green, or another visible color. That does not mean the dots emit UV light. Absorbing UV and emitting UV are distinct processes; some UV-related transitions relax without producing emission. The 2024 review discusses this distinction: Fluorescent carbon quantum dots with controllable physicochemical properties fantastic for emerging applications.

For a meaningful color-tuning experiment, specify the excitation wavelength and measure the emission spectrum. A UV lamp’s appearance alone is not a wavelength measurement, and changing the excitation wavelength can move the observed emission peak without permanently changing the synthesized material.

Why CQD emission color is not controlled by one universal knob

“Carbon dots” covers materials with differing carbon cores, conjugated domains, surface chemistries, defects, and sometimes local fluorophores. Proposed emission contributions include transitions in conjugated π-domains, surface or defect states, fluorophores, and dopant-related states. Their relative importance varies by material, so two CQD samples of similar size may emit different colors. The mechanisms and tuning approaches are reviewed by Yan et al. in The fluorescence mechanism of carbon dots, and methods for tuning their emission color.

Which variables can shift CQD emission?

Conjugated-domain and particle size

When emission is governed mainly by conjugated carbon domains, changing their size can alter the energy gap: smaller domains may have wider gaps and shorter-wavelength emission, while larger domains may shift emission toward longer wavelengths. A 2024 review summarizes a study reporting a blue-to-red shift as CQD size increased from 1 to 8 nm. This is a result from that cited system, not a universal size-to-color calibration.

Size is therefore a possible tuning lever, not a guarantee. The same review notes a comparison in which particles around 2.6 nm showed colors from blue through green and yellow to red. A separate review describes CQDs around 1.2–3.8 nm in size-manipulation examples, but also notes a material family whose members had different sizes and similar steady-state photoluminescence. These examples are summarized in the 2024 review and the 2022 Frontiers in Materials review.

Surface states, oxidation, and functionalization

Surface groups and defects can contribute emitting or recombination states, so oxidation, passivation, and functionalization may change the spectrum even when gross particle size changes little. The direction and size of the shift depend on the particular material and treatment; there is no reliable rule that “more oxygen” or “more nitrogen” always moves emission toward green.

A 2021 experimental study compared citric-acid pyrolysis, microwave treatment of glucose, and hydrothermal treatment of glucosamine hydrochloride, then examined nitrogen-containing functionalization. It associated differences in photoluminescence with synthesis method, starting material, and surface states. Its hydrothermal samples had the highest fluorescence quantum yield among the formulations compared in that study—not a general ranking of hydrothermal CQDs. Precursor, reaction route, and heteroatom content

Different precursors and synthesis conditions can produce different degrees of carbonization, surface groups, and heteroatom incorporation. The 2021 study documents three bottom-up routes: classical pyrolysis of citric acid, microwave irradiation of glucose, and hydrothermal treatment of glucosamine hydrochloride. They are examples of distinct preparation strategies, not recipes proven to yield a particular yellow-green peak.

For a citric-acid route, citric acid is a starting chemical, not finished CQDs; the reaction and purification protocol determine the resulting material. Treat any route as a starting point for controlled experimentation, rather than assuming the precursor name alone predicts the emission.

Separate excitation-dependent color from a synthesis-induced shift

Some CQDs show excitation-dependent photoluminescence: the emission peak changes when the excitation wavelength changes. The 2022 review summarizes one reported case in which emission ranged from 525 to 660 nm as excitation changed from 425 to 625 nm. Those values describe that case, not one fixed emission color or an expected output for other CQDs. Report excitation and emission wavelengths together so a measurement change is not mistaken for a synthesis-induced change.

  1. Choose one CQD family and precursor. Select a documented preparation route and keep the starting material consistent across the comparison.
  2. Choose one variable to test. Depending on the system, vary a reaction condition, size fraction, oxidation treatment, surface functionalization or passivation, or heteroatom content. Avoid attributing a color change to size if surface chemistry and synthesis conditions changed at the same time.
  3. Keep purification and sample state consistent. Apply the same purification procedure and compare samples in the same state, such as dispersion or solid form; aggregation and sample conditions can affect what is measured.
  4. Measure the full emission spectrum under stated excitation. Record the excitation wavelength, emission peak or spectrum, and whether the sample was measured in solution or solid state. Do not infer a precise peak from visual appearance under a UV lamp.
  5. Characterize the proposed cause. If the shift is attributed to domain size, provide size or structural evidence; if attributed to surface states or doping, provide relevant surface or composition evidence. Without a matched series and supporting characterization, describe the color difference as observed rather than claiming a proven mechanism.

When comparing candidate routes, also track spectral width, quantum yield, photostability, batch reproducibility, dispersion or aggregation, and purification burden. The cited literature establishes that preparation and surface-state differences can affect photoluminescence, but it does not establish one best route across these trade-offs.

How to report a result clearly

Describe the sample and measurement together. Include the precursor and preparation route, reaction conditions, post-treatment, sample state, excitation wavelength, measured emission peak or full spectrum, and evidence relevant to the proposed size or surface mechanism. “Yellow-green CQDs” alone is not reproducible information: the actual spectrum and measurement conditions matter, and the cited sources do not establish a universal wavelength boundary for yellow-green.

What the literature supports—and what it does not

A 2020 study of anthracite-derived CQDs interpreted blue luminescence as potentially intrinsic and green or yellow luminescence as potentially associated with new energy states from oxygen-containing functional groups. That is a cautious interpretation for the samples studied, not a general explanation for all CQDs. The authors describe their coal-derived approach as promising in Facile and Efficient Fabrication of Bandgap Tunable Carbon Quantum Dots Derived From Anthracite and Their Photoluminescence Properties.

Together, the cited examples show why the practical target is a reproducible sample and measured spectrum, not a universal recipe: size can matter in some systems, surface chemistry can matter independently, and excitation conditions can change the observed peak.
