Then improve the PS5’s link to your router, restart the network equipment if needed, and let downloads run in Rest Mode when you are away. These steps can resolve local connection problems, but they cannot overcome an internet-plan limit, household congestion, a PSN issue, or temporary network congestion.
1. Check whether the problem is PSN or your connection
Before changing settings, check PlayStation Network status. If services are disrupted, the slowdown may be outside your home network.

Next, on the PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. This checks the console’s connection; it does not guarantee that a game download will reach a particular speed. If the test fails or the download remains slow, continue with the connection steps below. Sony’s PS5 connection troubleshooting also recommends checking with your internet service provider when problems persist.

2. Improve the PS5’s connection to the router
If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them where practical. This is most useful when the wireless signal is weak or unreliable.

If you can connect the console to the router, try Ethernet as a way to avoid a weak Wi-Fi link. Set it up at Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Sony’s PS5 internet connection instructions cover wired setup.

A wired connection can be a useful troubleshooting test, but Sony does not promise a specific speed gain. If the PS5 already has a stable wired connection, buying a cable or router is not a default fix for slow downloads.

3. Restart the console and network equipment
- Pause or note the download, then restart the PS5 and retry it.
- If the slowdown continues, turn off the router or modem. Where Sony’s troubleshooting steps specify it, wait at least five minutes before turning it back on.
- Wait for the router or modem to finish restarting and reconnecting, then test the PS5 connection and resume the download.
- If a download or copy error appears, follow Sony’s download and network error troubleshooting. It may recommend updating system software and retrying the download from the Library.
A restart can clear a temporary local connection problem, but it will not necessarily help if the cause is network congestion or a service issue.

Rest Mode is useful when you want a download to continue while you are away from the console. It does not make the connection transfer data faster.

- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- To configure updates, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, then choose Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode as appropriate.
Sony notes that you can enable Auto-Download without choosing Auto-Install if you do not want the console to close a suspended game. See PlayStation automatic update settings for details.

If the connection test succeeds but downloads remain slow, the limiting factor may be your internet plan, other people or devices using the home connection, PSN availability, or temporary congestion. A console setting cannot guarantee faster downloads in those cases.

For a persistent connection problem, check that the router firmware is current and contact your ISP or network administrator. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes advanced network settings for particular errors, but custom DNS, static IP, MTU changes, port forwarding, and proxy changes are not universal speed fixes. If you are unfamiliar with those settings, ask your ISP or network administrator before changing them.
