Work through the simplest checks first: update Slay the Spire 2 and SteamOS, fully shut down the Steam Deck, then verify the game files. If that does not help, undo recent system tweaks and test storage or Proton settings one change at a time. There is no documented fix that resolves every Deck crash or launch failure.
Why a single fix may not work
Slay the Spire 2 entered Early Access on Steam on March 5, 2026, and its store page lists SteamOS + Linux support. The page also says further bug fixes and broader hardware compatibility are planned. That makes the default SteamOS/Linux setup the sensible starting point—not a guarantee that every Deck configuration will run without problems. Steam store page

- Update the game and SteamOS. Install available updates for both, then retest.
- Fully shut down the Deck. Open the Power menu, choose Shut Down, wait for the device to turn off, then power it on and try the game again. A restart is not the same as a full shutdown.
- Temporarily undo recent changes. If the issue began after changing BIOS settings, performance tweaks, plugins, or third-party utilities, restore the prior defaults or disable the changes for a controlled retest. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it matters.
- Verify the game installation. In Steam, open Slay the Spire 2‘s Properties, choose Installed Files, then select the option to verify integrity of the game files. Retry after Steam finishes.
- Compare internal and removable storage if applicable. If the game is installed on a microSD card or another external drive, move it to the Deck’s internal SSD and test again. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to buy storage; if the game already runs from internal storage, this step does not apply.
A Steam Community thread reproduces a user-posted reply attributed to Steam Support that recommends several of these checks. Treat it as guidance relayed in a forum, not as a game-specific official support article. Steam Community discussion

When—and how—to test Proton
Because Steam lists SteamOS + Linux support, forcing Proton is an experiment rather than a required fix. If the game still fails on its default compatibility setting, test a recent Proton release; if the problem persists, compare with the previous release. Change only the compatibility setting, retest the same symptom, and revert if things get worse.
Do not assume a Proton switch will solve all Linux startup failures. A report opened March 21, 2026 describes loading or main-menu crashes on Intel Broadwell hardware running Fedora and Mesa; its author tested Proton Experimental, Proton 9.0-1, and Proton 6.3 without success. That report is specific to its hardware and software configuration, not a diagnosis of Steam Deck crashes. ValveSoftware/Proton issue report

Crash during Linux gameplay
The v0.107.1 notes identify a Linux combat crash involving UI elements removed mid-frame as fixed. If your game still crashes during combat, the notes do not establish that this was your cause or that every combat crash is covered; record the game version and when the crash occurs before reporting it. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCrash or failure during startup
The same notes list a fix for a crash when ICU libraries are unavailable and a fix for a feedback screen stuck on launch. Those named fixes do not establish a universal solution for a game that will not launch. Do not install system libraries manually based on the wording of the patch note; the available evidence does not show that doing so is appropriate for a Steam Deck configuration.

Black screen
The sources available here do not establish a universal current fix for a black screen. Try the update, shutdown, file-verification, and controlled compatibility checks above, then record whether the screen goes black before the game logo, at the menu, or during play. That timing is more useful for diagnosing the failure than calling every launch problem a crash.
Controller trouble or missing audio
Version 0.107.1 notes include controller fixes, such as preventing rapid switching between detected input types and correcting several navigation issues; they also mention Linux audio behavior. If the game launches but input or sound is wrong, note the exact behavior and game version. A controller or audio issue alone does not establish why the game crashes.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Separate a game-specific failure from a Deck-wide problem
Try another game you know works well, including a Verified title. If other games show similar instability, the problem may extend beyond Slay the Spire 2; if they do not, that comparison still cannot identify the game’s exact cause, but it helps describe the scope of the failure. Also note whether the issue happens in Gaming Mode, Desktop Mode, or both.
What to include in a useful report
If the checks do not resolve the problem, report the reproducible symptom through Mega Crit’s in-game feedback tool or community feedback route. Mega Crit’s Early Access page says the developers monitor player feedback and explains why it matters: “Slay the Spire requires a lot of player feedback so we can balance content, add quality of life features, and make sure the game runs without issues.” Steam’s support page also links to community discussions and guides, but does not provide a game-specific Steam Deck crash remedy.
