How to Fix Sims 4 Mods After an Update Without Losing Your Saves

Do not simply turn every mod back on. First launch The Sims 4 with mods disabled, test a household in Live Mode, and exit without saving. Then check each creator’s compatibility notice for your exact game version, replace outdated files, re-enable both mod settings, and restart. If the problem returns, remove gameplay and script mods first and use the 50/50 method to isolate the file or conflict.

EA disables third-party content after updates because a previously working file may no longer be compatible. Follow the procedure below to restore your game while protecting saves.

Quick, safe fix

1. Back up the entire The Sims 4 user folder, especially Saves, Tray, Mods, and Screenshots.
2. Start the game with mods disabled and load an existing household or a temporary test save.
3. Play briefly in Live Mode, then choose Exit Game. Do not choose Save and Exit.
4. Check each mod creator’s official page for an update matching your game’s version number.
5. Remove old files as instructed by the creator and install the complete replacement, including required dependencies.
6. Enable both mod options under Game Options > Other, apply the changes, and restart.
7. If the fault returns, remove gameplay and script mods and identify the culprit with 50/50 testing.

EA warns that saving while custom content and mods are disabled can remove modded content from a save. The official procedure is documented at EA Help.

Why an update disables or breaks mods

After an official update, EA turns off mods to reduce crashes and corrupted gameplay while creators revise their files. This does not normally mean the files were deleted. A patch can change game code, interfaces, tuning, animations, or pack behavior, making a gameplay or script mod incompatible. Some releases require a complete replacement rather than overwriting one file.

Know which type of content you have

• Custom content (CC): clothing, hair, furniture, objects, skins, build items, and similar assets.
• Gameplay mods: files changing menus, careers, traits, autonomy, progression, interactions, or other systems.
• Script mods: mods containing .ts4script files. They are generally more sensitive to patches than decorative CC.
• Tray content: Sims, households, rooms, and lots. These belong in Tray, not Mods.

Back up before troubleshooting

Close the game and copy the complete user folder to another location. On Windows it is usually C:Users[user]DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4; on macOS it is Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/. Preserve at least:

• Saves for households and worlds
• Tray for downloaded Sims, lots, and rooms
• Mods for your installed files
• Screenshots if you want to retain captures

Keep the backup untouched while testing. If a household is unstable, work from a copied save rather than repeatedly opening and saving the original.

Test the game with mods disabled

Launch the game after the update and load a household in Live Mode, not just the main menu. Check whether the original symptom occurs: a crash, missing interaction, distorted object, failure to load, or return to the world screen. If the game behaves normally, use the menu to choose Exit Game without saving before changing any files.

If the symptom remains with mods disabled, the cause may be an EA bug, damaged user data or save, missing official files, cloud-sync interference, a pack issue, or a platform problem. Do not keep reinstalling third-party files until you have tested those possibilities.

Re-enable Sims 4 mods correctly

1. Open The Sims 4.
2. Select Options, then Game Options.
3. Open Other.
4. Check Enable Custom Content and Mods.
5. Check Script Mods Allowed.
6. Select Apply Changes.
7. Close and fully relaunch the game.

Both boxes are required. Ordinary CC can work while script features remain missing if Script Mods Allowed is off. After restarting, confirm that the Mods/CC notification appears, the expected item or interaction is present, and Live Mode remains stable. These controls are also described by CurseForge support.

Find the active Mods folder and install files correctly

Extract ZIP or RAR downloads before installing. Keep every file the creator says is required; one archive may contain several components or dependencies. A script file must be in a folder structure the game supports, and Tray files must not be placed in Mods. The manual path and file guidance is available in CurseForge’s installation guide.

Update mods safely

Use the creator’s official download or support location, not an unverified “updated” repost. Match the creator’s notice to the game version shown in the lower-left corner of the main menu. A community index may list a patch such as 1.126 from July 21, 2026, but that is not necessarily the newest patch when you read this; compare dates and versions rather than assuming a list is current.

1. Identify the creator and the exact mod version installed.
2. Read the creator’s post for the relevant Sims 4 patch, including later hotfixes.
3. Check required libraries, modules, packs, and dependencies.
4. Remove the old version unless the creator explicitly says to overwrite it.
5. Install all replacement components and remove duplicate old files.
6. Test the updated mod in a disposable or copied save before returning to your main save.

If mods do not appear

• Confirm both enablement boxes are checked and the game was fully restarted.
• Verify that files are in the active user folder, not the game-installation directory.
• Check whether Documents is redirected to OneDrive or another cloud location.
• Extract compressed archives.
• Confirm the file is for The Sims 4, not another game or edition.
• Check that a newly generated empty user folder has not become the folder the game is using.
• Remember that Tray downloads will not appear in the Mods list.

CurseForge can manage supported hosted content, but it cannot guarantee compatibility for every creator’s file or cover manually installed releases. Deleting all content through its app can also remove saved Sims and buildings from the library, so maintain a backup first.

Clear the cache after removing or replacing files

The community commonly recommends deleting localthumbcache.package after removing or replacing mods. It is usually at DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4localthumbcache.package and is regenerated by the game. This is a cleanup step, not an EA guarantee that it fixes every problem.

1. Close The Sims 4.
2. Move the Mods folder or suspected files out of the user folder.
3. Delete localthumbcache.package.
4. Relaunch and test without saving over the affected household.

Do not confuse this cache file with Saves or Tray. The community procedure is described in the EA Forums mod guide.

Use the 50/50 method to find a bad file

EA recommends isolating content in batches. This binary-search approach is faster than testing hundreds of files one at a time.

1. Move all Mods and CC out of the game and confirm the vanilla test works.
2. Restore a manageable batch and launch.
3. If it works, add another batch.
4. If it fails, split the failing batch in half and test one half.
5. Continue splitting until you identify the file or small group that causes the symptom.

Test in this order:

1. Remove all gameplay and script mods first.
2. If the game works, isolate those mods individually or in small groups.
3. If it still fails, test CC groups such as Build/Buy, CAS, sliders and presets, default replacements, eyes/skins/body details, and Tray content.

Two individually updated mods can still conflict, so a creator’s compatibility label does not prove that two files work together.

Symptom guide

Error codes are clues, not proof of one particular file. The EA Forums index also tracks recurring mod and CC symptoms, including returns to the world screen: EA Forums mod and CC issues.

When the game will not launch or still fails without mods

1. Remove the entire Mods folder from the active user folder.
2. Delete localthumbcache.package.
3. Start the game and test the base game and a backed-up save.
4. If it launches, restore only verified files in batches.
5. If it does not, use the EA app or your platform’s current Repair or Verify function.
6. If repair fails, test with a newly generated Sims 4 user folder while preserving the original backup.

Repairing official installation files cannot update an incompatible third-party mod. A game-side bug is also possible: EA’s March 23, 2026 update documented a launch crash affecting about 2% of players using certain CC types and supplied a hotfix. See EA’s update notes and current bug reports before deleting working content.

If the problem occurs only when one mod is installed, contact that creator through the official support channel. For persistent vanilla problems, use EA’s troubleshooting and bug-report channels. Cloud-sync conflicts, damaged saves, pack-specific bugs, permissions on Mac, and files outside the obvious Mods folder can all produce similar symptoms.
