If your Shure MV6 voice level seems to rise and fall, first test its Auto Level setting: Shure says it adjusts microphone gain in real time according to your distance and speaking volume. In Shure MOTIV Mix, switch Gain from Auto Level to Manual, set the gain while speaking at a consistent distance, and record a short comparison. This is a controlled troubleshooting method, not a guaranteed fix; Shure does not identify “pumping” as a named MV6 fault.
Switch from Auto Level to Manual gain
Auto Level is the MV6’s default gain mode. Because it responds to distance and volume, movement toward or away from the microphone, or changes in how loudly you speak, can lead to gain changes during use. That behavior is intentional; it does not by itself establish that the microphone is faulty. Shure documents Auto Level and Manual gain in its MV6 User Guide.

- Open Shure MOTIV Mix and select the gear icon next to the MV6 name, or open the settings in the input panel.
- Change Gain from Auto Level to Manual. The Manual setting exposes a gain slider.
- Speak at your usual volume and distance, then adjust the slider until your voice records at a suitable level without clipping.
- Record a short sample and listen back. Keep the microphone position, speaking volume, recording application, and app input level unchanged during the test.
The controlled comparison above is a practical troubleshooting suggestion, not a Shure-prescribed test or a published result. The MV6 stores its most recently used settings, so check the selected mode if behavior changes between sessions.

For a useful Auto Level-versus-Manual comparison, keep your mouth-to-microphone distance and speaking volume steady. Also make sure your recording or streaming application is using the MV6 as its input. Avoid changing that app’s input level while comparing settings; otherwise, it is harder to tell which change affected the recording.

Confirming the selected input is a general troubleshooting check, not evidence that a third-party application is causing the issue. Shure’s guide documents the MV6 controls but does not establish how other apps handle gain.
Test MV6 processing one setting at a time
If Manual gain does not resolve the uneven sound, compare relevant processing options individually. Make a short recording after each change, keeping your position, voice, and app input level consistent. This makes it easier to identify whether a particular setting changes the sound. The MOTIV Mix guide lists the following MV6 controls, but does not identify them as causes of gain pumping.

- High-pass filter: Compare the available 75 Hz and 150 Hz settings if low-frequency noise or rumble is a concern.
Shure says Auto Level, Real-time Denoiser, and Digital Popper Stopper are optimized for speech. For singing or instruments, Shure recommends disabling those three features. The guide’s MV6 feature table does not list manual compressor or limiter controls for this model. See the MOTIV Mix User Guide for the documented settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck firmware or restore defaults only if needed
If MOTIV Mix offers a firmware update, follow Shure’s firmware instructions and keep the MV6 connected. An update is a general maintenance check, not a documented fix for uneven levels. Shure’s firmware archive is the place to verify the current version; its listed releases can change over time: MV6 firmware archive.

If an update fails, Shure’s guide says to quit the app completely, check the connections, wait five minutes, and retry. To return the microphone to its defaults, use Reset to Defaults in settings—but first note your current settings, because resetting removes your changes.

Shure describes the MV6 as a USB gaming microphone with a USB-C connection and a 3.5 mm headphone output. Its guide specifies a dynamic moving-coil transducer, cardioid pattern, 16- or 24-bit A/D conversion at 44.1 or 48 kHz, a gain range of 0 to +36 dB, and a frequency response of 50 Hz to 15,000 Hz. These specifications describe the device; they do not identify the cause of an uneven recording. See Shure’s MV6 product page and user guide.
