Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose an external drive by the exact Panasonic recorder model and the support list for your country—not by capacity or “USB 3.0” alone. Find the full DMR model number, then check Panasonic’s matching USB-HDD compatibility page before buying. Panasonic’s Japanese lists name specific drives for specific recorder families, and their support does not automatically extend to every 4K DIGA.
Start with the recorder’s exact model and region
Look for the complete DMR model code on the recorder’s label or in its settings/about screen. Use that code to find Panasonic’s support page for the same model and regional market. Panasonic publishes separate compatibility lists for recorder families, and its Australia guidance, for example, is not interchangeable with a Japanese model list.

On the support page, check the drive’s exact product code. A matching brand, capacity, or USB generation is not enough: Panasonic’s list is the key evidence that a particular drive is supported with a particular recorder family. If your exact model or region is not covered by the page you found, do not treat a drive listed for another DIGA as confirmed compatible.

Check the recording feature you need
Compatibility can depend on more than whether the recorder can see a drive. Confirm support for the intended use—such as ordinary recording, simultaneous recording, channel recording, or recording 4K broadcasts—on the page for your recorder. Panasonic documents feature combinations separately for its 4K DIGA families; they should not be assumed to be identical across models.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
For the listed 4K DIGA families, 4K broadcasts cannot be recorded or dubbed to a SeeQVault-formatted USB HDD. Do not choose a SeeQVault drive on the assumption that its format will preserve this 4K recording use.
Examples Panasonic lists—and what they do not prove
As examples only, Panasonic Japan’s 4K-broadcast compatibility list, updated 2025-02-13, includes the Buffalo HDV-SAM4.0U3-BKA (4TB, USB 3.0) for the covered family. Panasonic’s 2025 lists also name selected Buffalo 3TB and 4TB models and the Panasonic DY-HD2000 (2TB). These are listed product capacities, not a guarantee that the drives work with every Panasonic 4K recorder. Verify the exact product code against your recorder’s own list.

| Example drive | Capacity and interface | Compatibility qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Buffalo HDV-SAM4.0U3-BKA | 4TB, USB 3.0 | Named on Panasonic Japan’s 4K-broadcast USB-HDD list updated 2025-02-13; applies to the covered recorder family, not all 4K DIGA models. |
| Selected Buffalo models | 3TB or 4TB, depending on model | Listed on Panasonic Japan compatibility pages updated in 2025; check the exact product code and recorder family. |
| Panasonic DY-HD2000 | 2TB | Named on Panasonic Japan compatibility pages updated in 2025; check the exact recorder-family list. |
Match the USB port and cable
For the covered models, Panasonic says: “To use it as USB 3.0, connect it to this unit’s USB 3.0 port with a USB 3.0-compatible cable.” A front USB 2.0 port or a cable that does not support USB 3.0 can result in USB 2.0 operation, even if the drive itself is USB 3.0. Follow the port and cable instructions on the relevant model page.

The recorder must register the USB-HDD before it can be used. Panasonic says a DIGA can register eight USB-HDDs, with seven on some models, but only one USB-HDD can be connected for use at a time. Check your model’s rules rather than treating those registration counts as universal.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Registration and formatting are recorder operations, not a promise that recordings will behave like ordinary files. Do not assume you can unplug the drive and play its recordings on a computer or transfer them to another recorder. If moving recordings between devices matters to you, confirm the exact model’s rules before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the recorder: write down the full DMR model number from the label or settings/about screen.
- Open the matching local Panasonic page: use the support documentation for that precise model and country or region.
- Verify the product code: match the complete HDD model number on Panasonic’s list; do not rely on brand, capacity, or USB 3.0 alone.
- Confirm the recording type: check whether the drive and recorder combination supports your intended use, especially 4K broadcasts and simultaneous or channel recording.
- Check connection details: use the specified recorder port and a compatible cable where USB 3.0 is required.
- Account for registration: expect to register the drive and follow the recorder’s formatting instructions; verify any portability needs beforehand.
For the specific Japanese families covered by Panasonic’s updated 2025 pages, consult the 4K-broadcast recording USB-HDD list and, where applicable, the confirmed USB-HDD list for DMR-2X301 and DMR-2W201/2W101/2W51. Panasonic’s DIGA external USB-HDD FAQ covers registration and simultaneous connection rules; its 4K DIGA simultaneous-recording guidance explains recording combinations. For Australia, consult the separate Panasonic Global connectable USB-HDD page rather than applying a Japanese list to a local model.
