Start by checking Sea of Thieves and Xbox service status, then use the exact Beard error code to choose the right fix. If services are working and the code points to a local connection problem, try restarting the game and device, checking account and update status, and testing your network before changing router settings. Matchmaking preferences can affect region and player pool, but they cannot repair an outage or a broken connection.
1. Check whether Sea of Thieves or Xbox services are having trouble
Before changing your router, check the Sea of Thieves Support notices and Xbox service status. A service interruption or maintenance can prevent connection or matchmaking even when your own network is fine. Status is a useful first diagnostic check; a support article about a Store error does not, by itself, establish that a gameplay outage is occurring.

2. Find the exact Beard error
Open Rare’s Beard Errors guide and match the message or code shown in the game. The guide, last updated May 22, 2025, groups errors that can involve service interruption or maintenance, a lost connection, an outdated game, account or license problems, and local network or firewall issues.
Follow the action for the specific code. Some errors call for relaunching or retrying; others point to signing in, updating, or contacting support. A maintenance-related code will not be fixed by changing ports, and an account or license error calls for account checks rather than router changes.

3. Try low-risk device and network checks
If services appear normal and the error suggests a local connection issue, work through these checks in order. Quit the game fully between attempts so you can tell whether a change helped.
- Relaunch and restart. Fully quit Sea of Thieves and open it again. If the problem continues, restart the device and router. The official Beard Errors and Windows/Steam troubleshooting pages include relaunch and restart steps.
- Check the device’s network status. Confirm the device is connected to the internet and that other online services work. If several services fail, investigate the connection before changing Sea of Thieves settings.
- Test a direct wired connection if available. On a PC, connect directly to the router with Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi or an intervening network bridge, then retry. This is an optional diagnostic suggestion from the Windows/Steam Store-availability guide, not a guaranteed gameplay fix. It will not resolve a service outage or account/license error, and buying a cable is not required if you do not have one.
- Check VPN and security software behavior. A VPN, firewall, or antivirus configuration may interfere with access. Test whether the issue changes when the VPN is disconnected or the relevant security setting is investigated. Do not leave firewall or antivirus protection disabled; if a test identifies interference, use the software’s application allow-list instead.
4. Check account, updates, and installation on Windows or Steam
The Windows/Steam steps below come from Sea of Thieves’ Windows / Steam – Store is currently unavailable support article, last updated June 23, 2023. That page addresses a Store-availability error, so treat its network suggestions as troubleshooting options rather than proof that every step applies to every current platform or gameplay error.

- Microsoft Store or Xbox app: Make sure the correct Microsoft/Xbox account is signed in and check that the game and Windows have available updates.
- Steam: Confirm that the Xbox account linked to Sea of Thieves is the account you intend to use, and that the Steam account owns the game. If installation corruption is suspected, use Steam’s file-integrity check for the game.
The same Windows/Steam article also mentions NAT, IPv6, Teredo, Xbox network ports, trying another internet connection, and contacting your ISP if traffic may be blocked. These are advanced checks, not a checklist to apply indiscriminately: change only a setting relevant to your platform and the error, and consult platform-specific official instructions before altering network configuration.

5. Adjust matchmaking settings only when the symptom fits
Cross-region matching
Sea of Thieves uses cross-region matchmaking by default. If matching with players in other regions is associated with performance issues, the support guide says to go to Main Menu > Settings > Matchmaking and toggle Disable Cross-Region Matchmaking. The option’s wording is easy to misread: disabling cross-region matchmaking means matches are no longer sought across regions. This may change the available player pool and is not a guaranteed way to lower latency or resolve every search timeout. The guide was last updated September 5, 2025. See Cross-Region Matchmaking.

- Whether you’re voyaging as a group or sailing solo, you’re bound to encounter other crews in this shared-world adventure – but will they be friends or foes, and how will you respond?
Cross-platform and controller preferences
In Settings > Matchmaking, players can choose whether to use cross-platform matchmaking; console players can also set a preference for playing with other console players using a controller. These preferences shape who can be matched with you. They do not repair a service outage or a faulty network connection, and the available options depend on platform. Sea of Thieves Support’s Crossplay and player matchmaking preferences article was last updated March 6, 2026 and notes that some settings appear only on certain platforms.

If the relevant Beard code still occurs after the applicable checks, use that code’s instructions in the official guide or contact Sea of Thieves Support with the exact message, platform/storefront, and steps already tried. If evidence points to blocked traffic or an ISP issue, contact the ISP rather than making unrelated router changes. Official support materials do not publish a success rate for individual fixes or a universal latency threshold for matchmaking.
