To capture content that appears on hover, activate the element’s hover state before taking the screenshot. For a one-off capture, force :hover in Chrome DevTools; for repeatable captures, use Playwright to hover the trigger and then take the screenshot. A full-page screenshot alone will not open hover-only content.
First check what reveals the hidden content
Move the pointer over the trigger on the live page. If the content appears only then, the capture must preserve or deliberately emulate that state. Hover behavior can be driven by CSS, JavaScript, or both, so inspect the specific trigger rather than assuming every menu, tooltip, or panel responds in the same way.

Also distinguish hover from keyboard focus. A site may reveal content on focus as well as hover, but these are separate states: forcing :hover does not open a focus-triggered menu. Chrome DevTools exposes :focus, :focus-within, and :focus-visible separately.
For a one-off screenshot, force :hover in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Use the element picker to inspect the element that triggers the hidden content.
- In the Styles pane, select
:hovand enable:hover. - Confirm the desired content is visible, then capture the page with your preferred screenshot method.
Forcing the state in DevTools is useful when diagnosing a page or taking a manual capture: the hover state stays applied while you interact with the developer tools, rather than depending on where the pointer happens to be. For repeat captures, hover with Playwright before taking the screenshot
In an automated capture, locate the actual trigger, call hover(), wait for any page-specific transition or content load, and then take the screenshot. Adapt the URL, locator, and wait condition to the site being captured; the example illustrates the sequence and is not a guarantee that every page uses the same label or timing.

If the site animates the content or fetches it after hover, add a wait that matches the page—for example, wait for the revealed panel’s selector or for a specific piece of text. Choose the capture area separately
Hover activation and screenshot scope are different decisions. Use an element or clipped capture when only the revealed component matters, a viewport screenshot for what is currently on screen, or full-page capture when below-the-fold content is also needed. Full-page capture expands the captured page area; it does not activate every hover state.

If an incidental hover effect makes screenshots inconsistent, move the pointer away from the affected area before capture. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance describes moving the mouse outside the page area or over an unaffected element. This is useful when testing the ordinary non-hover appearance rather than a revealed state.

Playwright also supports applying a stylesheet during screenshot capture. A stylesheet can neutralize volatile page elements, but it changes the rendering and may not match what visitors normally see. Use such overrides to stabilize visual comparisons, not to represent the unmodified page.

For reproducible visual tests, keep browser and runtime conditions consistent. Rendering can vary with the environment and settings, so a screenshot captured under different conditions may not be pixel-identical even when the page interaction is the same. Troubleshoot screenshots that still miss the content
- The panel never opens: Confirm that the selected element is the actual trigger. The visible control may not be the element with the hover behavior, or the page may require focus or another interaction instead.
- The screenshot is taken too soon: Wait for the revealed element or its loaded content before capture. Match the wait to the page’s transition or loading behavior.
- The wrong state appears after using DevTools: Check that
:hoveris enabled on the trigger element, not a nearby child or unrelated element. If the site uses focus behavior, test the relevant focus state separately. - The full-page image still omits the panel: Full-page capture changes the captured area, not interaction state. Activate the trigger before capture.
- Hover styling adds visual noise: Move the pointer to an unaffected area before capture, or use a capture stylesheet if an intentional rendering override is acceptable.
- Repeated runs differ: Keep the browser/runtime setup consistent and use a condition-based wait where possible. Page transitions and asynchronous content can affect when the screenshot is taken.
