First identify which sound is affected: media, ringtone, notifications, calls, or the physical volume keys. Galaxy phones control these separately, and sound may also be muted, sent to another device, or blocked by an accessory. Work through the checks below in order; the menu labels are common examples because Samsung notes that they can vary by model and software version.
Which sound is not working?
Before changing settings, test more than one sound source. Play a video or song, place a test call, and check whether an incoming call or notification can be heard. Note whether sound works through headphones or speakerphone but not through the phone’s built-in speaker or receiver. These comparisons help distinguish a channel setting from a routing, app, obstruction, or hardware problem.

- Media is quiet or silent: check the media volume while audio is playing.
- The caller is hard to hear: adjust in-call volume during a call, then compare earpiece and speakerphone sound.
- Calls do not ring: check ringtone volume and interruption settings.
- Notifications are silent: check notification volume and the relevant app’s tone settings.
- The side key does not respond: check for a case obstruction and run the phone’s button diagnostics.
Set the volume for the sound you mean
Pressing a side volume key does not always adjust the channel you expect. To check the available controls, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume. The exact path and slider names can differ, so search Settings for “Volume” if needed.

Start a video, song, or other audio and press Volume up. Check the media slider in the volume panel or Settings. Also check the audio app’s own volume and mute controls.

Calls
Place a test call and press Volume up while the call is active. In-call volume is adjusted during a call; changing media volume beforehand may not make the caller louder. Compare the earpiece with speakerphone to see whether the issue affects one output or both.
Ringtones and notifications
Stop media playback and disconnect headphones before trying to raise ringtone volume with the buttons. Samsung notes that active media or connected headphones can prevent a button press from increasing ringtone volume. Check ringtone and notification sliders separately, and check the sound setting for the particular app if only its alerts are silent. A phone’s general ringtone setting does not necessarily control tones chosen inside a third-party calling or messaging app.
Check mute, Do Not Disturb, and routines
Confirm that the phone’s sound mode is not set to Vibrate or Mute. Also check whether Mute all sounds is enabled under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements. Samsung says this setting can silence all audio, including the other caller’s voice, and volume cannot be adjusted while it is enabled.

If calls or alerts are missing, check Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb. Do Not Disturb can allow exceptions, so inspect its schedule and permitted people, apps, or alarms if you want to keep it on. Also review Modes and Routines for an active mode such as Sleep or Relax that may change sound behavior.
Airplane mode is worth checking if the specific problem is missed incoming calls; it is not a general fix for every quiet-audio symptom. If callers cannot reach you, also check whether the number is blocked or call forwarding is enabled.
Make sure sound is not going somewhere else
Disconnect wired headphones, then temporarily turn Bluetooth off and test again. A connected headset or other Bluetooth device can receive audio instead of the phone’s speaker. If only one app is routed differently, search Settings for Separate app sound and check whether that app is assigned to another output device. Menu placement varies by model and software version.

For wired headphones, confirm they are fully connected and test playback with another app. If the phone has a headphone jack, inspect it for visible debris or damage without inserting anything sharp. If headphones work but the built-in speaker does not, focus your checks on the speaker opening, routing, and possible hardware issues rather than raising headphone volume further.

Temporarily remove the case if it covers a speaker, microphone, receiver, or model-specific air vent. Check that a screen protector is not covering the earpiece. Samsung warns that blocked vents on some models can cause crackling or low sound; opening locations differ, so check the layout for your exact phone before removing or replacing an accessory.
If the phone has become wet, power it off and dry the exterior with a soft, clean cloth. Samsung’s regional guidance says not to use heat or salt water. Do not pour liquid into an opening or probe it with a pin or other sharp object. Persistent problems after moisture exposure should be assessed by a service professional.

Restart, update, and check for an app problem
- Restart the phone. Use the power menu if available. On certain devices, Samsung’s restart instruction is to hold the Side and Volume down buttons for more than seven seconds; button combinations can vary, so follow the guidance for your model.
- Install available updates. Check Settings > Software update and update sound-related apps through their usual update channel.
- Try Safe mode if the issue began after installing an app. Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. Test the same sound in that mode.
- Compare the result. If sound works in Safe mode, investigate recent downloads one at a time. If the problem remains, downloaded apps may not be the cause.
When volume keys do not work
Check whether the case is pressing against or blocking a key, and see whether the button feels stuck or physically damaged. If the key is obstructed, remove the case and test it again. Samsung Members diagnostics can check physical buttons on supported devices; search for Samsung Members diagnostics if the menu differs. If a key remains stuck or the diagnostic indicates a problem, contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider rather than attempting a generic button repair.
Reset settings only after simpler checks
If the problem persists, Samsung’s Reset all settings option may be a later software troubleshooting step. Samsung says it does not delete personal data, but preferences will need to be reviewed afterward. Find it by searching Settings for “Reset all settings,” since the menu path can vary.

It erases data: back up important information first, then test sound after the reset and before restoring apps. If the problem continues, or there is a stuck key, liquid exposure, visible damage, or a failed speaker or receiver, arrange service instead of repeating resets.
