Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf sound changed after an app update, first identify what is affected: all audio, media, notifications, system sounds, volume-button behavior, or the audio output route. Then check the matching Galaxy setting, restart the phone, and troubleshoot the app if the problem is limited to it. An app update may coincide with a sound problem, but Samsung’s guidance points to several possible settings and temporary system causes; it does not establish that app updates generally cause Galaxy sound faults.
Identify which sound stopped working
Before changing settings, test a few different sounds and note what happens. A silent notification with working music points to a different control than a phone that is silent everywhere.

- No sound at all: Check whether all sounds are muted and whether audio is being sent to an accessory.
- Media only: Check the media volume and whether the app’s sound is routed to another device.
- Ringtone or notifications: Check Do not disturb, the notification volume, and the affected app’s own notification settings.
- Touch or other system sounds: Check the system sound controls.
- Volume buttons affect the wrong sound: Open the volume controls and confirm which channel is changing.
- Sound comes through headphones or Bluetooth rather than the phone: Disconnect accessories temporarily and test the speaker.
Galaxy menu names and locations vary by model and software version. Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting guide describes separate sound controls, so do not assume every symptom has the same cause.

Check Galaxy sound and notification settings
Make sure Mute all sounds is off
On many Galaxy devices, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds and turn it off if enabled. Samsung says this setting can mute media, notifications, system sounds, and the other person’s voice during calls; it can also prevent volume adjustment. The label or path may differ on your phone.

Temporarily turn off Do not disturb
Open Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb and switch it off briefly to test calls and notifications. Do not disturb can silence them subject to its allowed exceptions, so check its schedule and exceptions if you want to keep it enabled.
Raise the channel that is actually quiet
Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume and raise the relevant slider—media, ringtone, notifications, or system. If button or touch sounds are the issue, review Settings > Sounds and vibration > System sound. Samsung lists these as distinct controls in its sound troubleshooting instructions.
Check sound routing and accessories
If only one app’s media plays through a different device, look for Separate app sound in the sound settings and turn it off if you did not intend to route that app separately. Disconnect headphones and other audio accessories, including Bluetooth devices, then play audio through the phone speaker. Samsung includes both separate app sound and connection checks in its speaker and sound troubleshooting checklist.

Restart and test the same sound again
Restart the Galaxy, then repeat the test that exposed the problem before making more changes. Samsung lists restart as a step for sound problems and notes that a temporary system error is one possible cause. If the issue is gone, there is no need to proceed to more disruptive steps.
If only one app is affected, troubleshoot that app
Clear its cache first
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the affected app, then tap Storage > Clear cache.
- Reopen the app and test its sound or notification again.
Samsung notes that the exact path can vary by software version and app. Clearing the cache removes temporary files; it does not have the same effect as clearing app data. See Samsung’s instructions for clearing app cache and data.
Check the app’s own sound and notification controls
If other apps and system sounds work but one app’s alert is silent, inspect that app’s notification categories and sound controls. Also check its in-app volume or audio settings if media playback is affected. These controls differ by app, so use the app’s settings rather than resetting phone-wide preferences first.

Clear data only if you accept the reset
If the fault remains clearly limited to the app, Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Clear data is an optional next step—not a guaranteed fix. It resets the app and removes locally saved personal settings or data; you may need to sign in again. Check whether important app data is backed up or synced before proceeding.
Use Safe mode to check for a downloaded-app conflict
Safe mode temporarily runs the phone without downloaded apps, making it a useful test when you suspect an app conflict. Follow Samsung’s Safe mode instructions for your device, then play audio and test the affected sound.
- If sound works in Safe mode: A downloaded app may be involved. Restart normally, remove recently installed apps one at a time, and retest after each removal.
- If sound still fails in Safe mode: The issue is not explained by a downloaded app alone. Continue with the settings checks below or contact Samsung if it persists.
Safe mode is for diagnosis, not a permanent operating mode.

Reset preferences only when simpler checks fail
Reset app preferences for persistent app behavior
For app behavior that persists after an update, some devices on One UI 6.1.1 document this path: Settings > Apps > More options > Reset app preferences. Samsung describes the option in its One UI 6.1 Galaxy AI update troubleshooting guide as resetting notification settings, default apps, and permission restrictions while leaving existing app data in place. It is an optional troubleshooting step, not a documented universal audio repair. Review notifications, defaults, and permissions afterward.
Consider Reset all settings before a factory data reset
Samsung’s sound troubleshooting guidance also lists Settings > General management > Reset > Reset all settings as a later step; the path may vary. This is not the same as a factory data reset. Read the on-screen description so you understand what your device will change.

Reserve factory data reset for a last resort
A factory data reset erases apps, settings, and personal files. Samsung’s Galaxy app-management guidance cautions about that data loss. Back up anything important and try less disruptive troubleshooting first.

When to contact Samsung support
If sound still fails after a restart and settings checks—including in Safe mode—contact Samsung support or a service center. Having these details ready can help explain the problem:
- Your Galaxy model and Android or One UI version.
- The affected app and its version, and when it was updated if known.
- Whether the issue affects the speaker, headphones, Bluetooth, or more than one output.
- Which sounds fail: media, notifications, ringtone, calls, or system sounds.
- Whether the problem occurs in Safe mode.
An update-specific Galaxy sound issue does appear in Samsung’s historical support archive, but it was limited to some devices running Android S / One UI 4 and described Sound and Vibration settings sometimes resetting. That older report is not evidence of a current general fault: Samsung Canada’s archived Android S / One UI 4 response.
