If ₹ is missing from a DocRaptor PDF, trace the problem through four layers: the input character and encoding, the selected font’s glyph coverage, font loading and CSS selection, then the generated PDF and its viewer. UTF-8 fixes encoding problems but cannot supply a glyph that the font does not contain.
1. Check the character in the HTML sent to DocRaptor
Start with the actual document content or API payload, not just a browser preview. Confirm that the amount contains the rupee sign, Unicode U+20B9: ₹1,234.50. Look for a replacement character (�), a malformed entity, or text that was corrupted before the request reached DocRaptor.

Declare UTF-8 in the document head:
<meta charset="utf-8">You can also represent the sign as the HTML character reference ₹ or the hexadecimal reference ₹. Check that the resulting document contains the intended character. DocRaptor recommends declaring UTF-8 when character-encoding errors occur: Custom Fonts & Web Fonts.
2. Verify that the applied font contains U+20B9
A font-family name, or a successful @font-face declaration, does not prove that the font includes every character. Inspect the character map of the exact font file and face used for the affected text. Check the specific weight and style too: a regular face may contain the glyph while a bold or italic face, or a separate subset file, does not.

Check any unicode-range declarations and the font subsets they refer to. DocRaptor’s web-font example for Open Sans displays a range that does not include U+20B9, illustrating why coverage must be checked rather than inferred from the family name. DocRaptor describes custom fonts as working like web fonts through @font-face selectors; that makes the font available, not universally complete.
3. Check CSS selection and remote font delivery
Make sure the currency text actually receives the intended font family, weight, and style. A more specific CSS rule, an unavailable face, or a fallback can mean the amount renders in a different font than expected.

If the font is remote, confirm that DocRaptor’s servers can retrieve the URL and that it returns a usable font resource. Inspect the document log for external-resource failures: these can be logged and ignored even when PDF generation succeeds. For diagnosis, set the API option ignore_resources_errors to false so resource failures are surfaced as errors. 4. Inspect the PDF, not only the browser preview
After generating a PDF, check whether text extraction contains the rupee sign. Then open the same file in a second PDF reader and, if relevant, compare the original viewer or printer with a current Adobe viewer. If the extracted text is correct but the glyph looks wrong or disappears only in one environment, the issue may be PDF font embedding, subsetting, or viewer/printer behavior rather than source encoding.

If Acrobat Pro is available, use Preflight to inspect the PDF and its fonts. Review the current DocRaptor API reference for font embedding or subsetting options when investigating viewer-specific differences; those settings do not replace a font that actually contains U+20B9. DocRaptor also notes trying an alternate font encoding—for example, OTF if TTF is problematic—or a visually similar font as possible print troubleshooting steps. Change one variable at a time and verify the resulting PDF in the target viewing environment. There is no universally certified font recommendation here.
