Repeated buffering has two different causes: YouTube may not be receiving a steady feed from your encoder, or the feed may be healthy while some viewers cannot play it smoothly. Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health first. Those signals tell you which problem to troubleshoot; changing settings at random can lower quality without fixing the cause.
First identify who is buffering
Ask whether all viewers are affected or only some, then check OBS and YouTube’s live health messages while the problem is happening. Note when buffering starts and whether it recurs at particular times; this can help you compare symptoms with network use or service interruptions.

- OBS reports network dropped frames: Start with the connection from your streaming computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says dropped frames indicate that connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- YouTube reports an incoming-video or stream-health problem: Read the specific warning and check encoder settings. YouTube’s LiveStream health documentation says
videoIngestionStarvedmeans YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming, so viewers will buffer. - OBS is clean, but viewers still report buffering: Investigate playback conditions on the audience side and whether the stream is too demanding for some viewers’ connections or devices. A clean outgoing feed does not guarantee smooth playback for everyone.
OBS explicitly distinguishes these symptoms: viewers can report buffering even when the broadcaster has no dropped frames. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but viewers’ locations, networks, devices, and playback quality still vary. Check YouTube health and encoder settings
Run a test before relying on an always-on stream: use audio and movement similar to the real program, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during operation. YouTube’s health checks can flag bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, or video-ingestion configuration problems. Correct the warning shown rather than assuming every buffering issue has the same cause.

Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s recommendations are format-specific, not a universal bitrate target. For H.264, the current YouTube Help table lists these examples:

These figures are YouTube recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain the selected bitrate continuously. H.265/HEVC and AV1 have different ranges. Check YouTube’s current encoder table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use.

OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting dropped frames. Treat that only as a starting heuristic: other network activity, actual sustained capacity, and platform limits matter. A single speed test cannot establish that your connection will remain stable for a continuous stream. OBS explains this in Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Check keyframe interval if YouTube flags it
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its health guidance associates long keyframe intervals with buffering. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube documents CBR and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 subject to the applicable configuration. Use the platform’s current requirements for the chosen codec and encoder.

If OBS shows dropped frames
- Test Ethernet before buying hardware. If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, connect it by Ethernet if a wired route is available and compare the dropped-frame counter. OBS notes Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable only tests the local wireless link; it will not fix viewer-side playback or an incorrect encoder configuration.
- Lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Choose a value consistent with stable upload capacity and YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Expect lower image quality if you reduce bitrate.
- Try another ingest server if your streaming software or service offers one. A different route may help isolate a connection-path problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check network software and settings one factor at a time. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, bundled network-optimization utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible sources of interference. Temporarily isolate a suspected factor for diagnosis, then restore security protections and follow the relevant vendor’s guidance.
- On Windows, consider OBS’s documented network options only if simpler checks fail. OBS discusses network optimizations and TCP pacing, as well as IP binding and IP family settings. If changing to IPv4-only makes no difference, return IP family to the default dual-stack setting.
- Restart the modem and router, then escalate if needed. If instability persists, contact your ISP with the times, symptoms, OBS logs, and YouTube health messages. OBS notes that provider-side changes or route congestion may be outside your control. Speak with the ISP before replacing suspected modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender hardware if you are unsure.
OBS also offers dynamic bitrate, which can reduce bitrate when a connection cannot keep up. It can lower video quality and does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
If viewers buffer but the outgoing stream is clean
Do not assume the encoder or creator’s ISP is at fault. Ask affected viewers to compare another device or network and note their app or browser and selected playback quality. If only some people are affected, those comparisons can help distinguish an audience-side constraint from a stream-wide issue.

If the stream is consistently difficult for viewers to play, test a lower output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate while staying within YouTube’s recommendations. This changes quality for all viewers, so compare the result before making it the permanent setting. There is no single output setting established to eliminate buffering for every audience, device, and connection.
Choose a remedy based on the signal

Keep an always-on stream observable
For a 24/7 podcast stream, test under conditions that resemble normal operation and periodically check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s health messages. Record recurring times and warnings so that a pattern can be investigated. These checks can help identify problems, but no setting or monitoring routine guarantees uninterrupted playback.
