If RCS messages won’t send between an iPhone and an Android phone, first make sure RCS is available and enabled on both phones, then check the connection, number, and messaging-app status. On iPhone, find the switch at Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging. On Android with Google Messages, open Profile picture > Messages settings > RCS chats and check whether the status says Connected.
1. Check that RCS is available on the iPhone
On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging. Turn on RCS Messaging if the switch is present and off. Apple requires iOS 18 or later and a cellular plan from a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone; availability varies by region and carrier. See Apple’s instructions for turning on RCS messaging.

If the RCS Messaging option is missing, do not assume the iPhone is faulty. Check that iOS is up to date, then ask the carrier whether RCS is supported for your country, plan, device, and line. A green message bubble alone does not show which service delivered it: iPhone uses green for RCS as well as SMS and MMS.

2. Read the Android RCS status
In Google Messages, go to Profile picture > Messages settings > RCS chats. Some app versions call this area Chat features. Check the status before changing other settings:

- Connecting: Google Messages is verifying your number. Wait for verification to finish.
- Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry: Verification has encountered a problem. If it remains this way for more than 30 minutes, follow Google’s guidance to open Details > Submit feedback.
- Not supported: Check internet access and whether the device and carrier support RCS.
- RCS chats disabled by your carrier: Contact the carrier. After it resolves the issue, return to the status screen and tap Retry.

3. Confirm Google Messages is set up correctly
On Android, RCS setup requires Google Messages to be the default SMS app, an internet connection, and the ability to receive SMS. Google also specifies Android 5.0 or later and recommends updating Google Play services. Update Google Messages, then check the RCS status again. If setup still fails, use Google’s RCS activation troubleshooting.

4. Check the network and the affected conversation
RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data. Try a connection you know works, confirm airplane mode is off, and check that the phone has cellular signal. Make sure the SIM is inserted correctly and the account has an active messaging plan or balance. Apple’s iPhone messaging troubleshooting also recommends checking the network and restarting the device.
If RCS fails only with one person, verify the recipient’s number, including the country code when needed. Check that the contact is not blocked; if the number is correct but the problem continues, Google suggests deleting and re-adding the contact. Its Google Messages troubleshooting steps cover connection and contact issues.
5. Restart, update, and test with a simple message
- Restart both phones.
- Install available updates for iOS and Google Messages, then reopen the RCS settings on each phone.
- Send a short plain-text message and check whether the RCS status remains connected.
- If text works but a photo or video does not, check the data connection and whether the conversation is using RCS or an MMS fallback.
These checks help separate a basic connection problem from an issue affecting only a particular conversation or media message.
6. Use the symptom to choose the next check

7. Resend with SMS or MMS if necessary
Google Messages lets you choose what happens when an RCS message fails. Open Messages settings > RCS chats > Resend messages and select a suitable fallback, if available. SMS or MMS may restore basic delivery, depending on your service and settings, but does not establish that the RCS connection has recovered. Google’s RCS guidance also warns that the SMS with a link option can make shared media accessible through a public link not controlled by Google.

When to contact the carrier
Contact your carrier if the iPhone’s RCS switch is missing after checking the iOS requirement, or if Google Messages says the carrier disabled RCS. Ask whether RCS is supported for your specific country, plan, device, and line, and whether activation is complete. Carrier support is part of RCS eligibility on both platforms; changing carriers is not a useful first step before checking the current account.
