If RCon stopped working immediately after a DayZ update, first make sure you are editing the configuration used by the running server—not an old BattlEye folder. Confirm the active -profiles and -BEpath launch parameters, restore a minimal BEServer_x64.cfg (or lowercase beserver_x64.cfg on Linux), select a free UDP port, allow that port through every firewall and NAT layer, restart the server, and test with an independent RCon client. This sequence separates a misplaced file or port conflict from a network or monitoring-service problem.

What DayZ RCon is, and why an update can break it
DayZ RCon is BattlEye RCon: an optional UDP protocol for remote administration of a supported server. It is not the same as the DayZ game connection port, the Steam query port, or a web-control-panel login. A working setup requires all of the following at the same time:

- The file must contain a valid password and an available RCon UDP port.
- The server process must be able to bind that port.
- Host, operating-system, router, and provider firewalls must pass the traffic.
- Your RCon client or monitoring service must use the same address, port, and password.
Updates commonly expose a problem that was already latent. A changed startup command can create a new profile directory, a provider can reserve a port that used to be free, or refreshed BattlEye binaries can make an administrator notice that the old configuration was never being read. The fix is therefore to trace the active server paths and verify each network layer in order.
1. Confirm the paths used by the running server
Do not begin by searching the entire disk for a file named BEServer_x64.cfg. DayZ’s launch parameters determine where BattlEye and server logs are written:

-profilessets the profile and log directory.-BEpathcan set a separate BattlEye directory.
Open the batch file, service definition, container command, or host-panel startup field that actually launches DayZ. Record the values passed to those parameters, then inspect those directories while the server is running. The process’s current command line matters more than a familiar folder left over from a previous installation or update.
Windows path check
On Windows, look for the BattlEye folder under the directory supplied by -BEpath, or under the active profile directory when no separate BattlEye path is supplied. The documented filename is BEServer_x64.cfg, including the capital letters. A file with a similar name in an inactive installation will have no effect.
Linux path check
Linux installations use the documented lowercase filename beserver_x64.cfg. Case-sensitive filesystems treat BEServer_x64.cfg and beserver_x64.cfg as different files, so verify both the directory and capitalization. Check the launch script or systemd unit for -profiles and -BEpath before changing anything.
RCon logs and other BattlEye output should appear in the active profile/BattlEye locations. If editing a file does not change the next startup log, you are probably editing the wrong copy.
2. Open or recreate the active BattlEye configuration
There is no universal fixed location for the configuration. It is commonly in profiles/BattlEye or beside BEServer_x64.dll on Windows, with the Linux equivalent using the lowercase filename. CFTools documentation and BattleMetrics troubleshooting both emphasize that the server needs a BattlEye configuration file in the BattlEye installation directory; the active launch paths determine which directory that means for your installation.

Stop the server before editing. If several candidate files exist, rename or move only the inactive copies after you have identified the live path, so a future update does not leave you guessing. Keep a backup of the file that was in use, but do not merge old settings blindly into a newly generated file.

3. Restore a minimal RCon configuration
For the first test, reduce the file to the two settings RCon needs:

RConPort=2305Choose your own password; the value above is an example, not a credential to copy. CFTools documents a maximum of 32 characters and advises using no spaces or special symbols. BattleMetrics also documents the 32-character limit. Use a long, unique combination of ordinary letters and numbers that is not reused for the game panel, operating-system account, or any other service.

Keep the file syntax simple: one setting per line, no quotation marks around the password, and no trailing comments on the same line while troubleshooting. Once a basic connection works, add other BattlEye settings one at a time so a typo cannot obscure the cause.
4. Choose and reserve a free UDP port
RCon uses UDP. A commonly documented starting convention is the game port plus three: for a game port of 2302, try 2305. This is an example, not a universal DayZ rule. Verify the actual port against the host’s allocation and every process on the machine.

On a self-managed Linux host, check listening sockets with the distribution’s normal socket tools, such as ss -lunp, and identify the owning process before reusing a port. On Windows, use the host’s equivalent UDP socket inspection or provider panel. A port can appear unused before startup and still fail when another service starts concurrently, so inspect the startup log after the restart as well.
5. Leave RConIP unset unless binding is intentional
An incorrect RConIP setting is a frequent self-inflicted failure. If it is set to 127.0.0.1, the server listens only on loopback; an external RCon client cannot reach it. Binding to a private address such as 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x can likewise prevent an Internet-based client from connecting, especially when the machine has multiple interfaces or sits behind NAT.
Delete the RConIP line for the initial repair. BattlEye can normally listen on the appropriate interfaces without an explicit bind. If your topology genuinely requires a bind, use the server’s public IP as documented by your host and confirm that the address is actually assigned to the machine. Do not use a panel hostname as a substitute for an interface address.
6. Open the complete network path
A correct configuration still produces a timeout when any firewall layer drops UDP. Permit both inbound and outbound UDP for the selected RCon port where your policy requires stateful return traffic.

Ensure outbound replies are not blocked.
- Operating-system firewall: Apply the rule to the network profile used by the server process. A rule created for a different profile may not match after a reboot or provider migration.
- Router or NAT: Forward the same UDP port to the server’s private address. Give the server a stable DHCP reservation or static address so the forward does not drift.
- Provider firewall: Check the hosting control panel and any separate edge-firewall product. BattleMetrics warns that some OVH GAME firewalls can block RCon or query traffic even when the panel reports the firewall as disabled.
- Client network: Test from a network that is allowed by your own corporate, campus, or VPN policy. A local client may be blocked by its egress firewall even when the server is reachable from elsewhere.
Use the narrowest source-address rule that still supports your administration workflow. Opening the entire UDP range is unnecessary and makes diagnosis harder. If your provider supplies a DDoS or game firewall, its rule must allow the RCon port separately from the game port.

7. Restart and read the startup evidence
BattlEye reloads the configuration when the server starts, not merely when you save the file. Stop the process cleanly, wait for it to exit, then start it with the same command you inspected in step one.
Review the first minutes of output in the active profile/BattlEye logs. Look for:

The password should be masked or omitted; never publish it in a support request.
- Bind failures, “address already in use” messages, or permission errors.
- Warnings that the configuration file cannot be opened or parsed.
- Evidence that the process created a different profile directory than the one you edited.
If the log shows a bind error, changing the client password will not help: select a free port or stop the conflicting service. If no RCon initialization appears at all, return to the launch parameters and filename case. If the server starts but the log points to a newly created BattlEye directory, copy only the minimal settings into that active location and restart again.

Use the official BE RCon client for Windows or another known-good RCon client. Enter the server’s reachable address, the exact RConPort, and the exact password. Test from outside the server machine when the service is intended for remote administration; a test from localhost can hide a NAT or firewall problem.
Interpret the result as a diagnostic branch:
- Connection succeeds: The server configuration, password, port bind, and at least one network path are working.
- Connection is refused or immediately fails: Check the port, configuration parsing, bind address, and whether BattlEye initialized RCon.
- Connection times out: Check provider, router, host, and operating-system UDP rules, then verify that the address resolves to the correct public interface.
- Login is rejected: Re-enter the password exactly, remove spaces and unsupported symbols, and confirm it is no longer than 32 characters.
If an independent client connects but a hosted monitoring service does not, stop changing the server file. Investigate the service’s configured address and port, its IP allowlist, and the path from its monitoring servers to your host. BattleMetrics recommends this differential test because it separates a server-side fault from an external monitoring or allowlist fault.
Update-specific causes and safe recovery
An old BattlEye directory is still being edited
Changed launch parameters can move profile and BattlEye output without moving your old files. Compare the running process command line with the startup script and then follow the active -profiles and -BEpath values. The file’s timestamp alone is not proof that the running process read it.
The update regenerated or relocated files
After an update, a fresh profile directory or BattlEye folder may contain a new configuration template. Preserve your backup, but apply only the required RCon lines to the active file first. This avoids carrying obsolete options into a refreshed BattlEye build.
BattlEye binaries are incomplete or stale
BattlEye states that current client-side and server-side files are delivered with the game distribution and recommends keeping them up to date, for example by verifying the game cache through Steam. Verify the DayZ server files through the distribution or host tooling before manually replacing BattlEye files. Manual copying from an unrelated installation can create a version mismatch and make a network symptom look like a configuration fault.
A newly selected port is reserved
The game-port-plus-three convention is only a starting point. A provider may reserve that number for query traffic, another DayZ instance may already use it, or an edge firewall may expose only a predefined range. Confirm the allocation with the host and choose another unused UDP port when necessary.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Direct RCon client or hosted monitoring?
Both administration routes use the same underlying BattlEye settings, but they fail in different places. Choose the route that matches your operational needs rather than assuming a dashboard removes the need for a working RCon port.

CFTools documents hosted DayZ RCon and monitoring behavior, while BattleMetrics documents RCon monitoring and troubleshooting. Their commercial terms and current availability can change, so verify those details directly before adopting a service. Regardless of the route, keep an independent client available for diagnosis.
Security practices after RCon is restored
- Use a unique password within the 32-character limit; never reuse a panel or operating-system password.
- Restrict firewall source addresses to your administration networks or the monitoring provider’s published addresses where feasible.
- Do not expose the BattlEye configuration file, startup scripts, or logs through a public web directory.
- Mask the password when sharing startup output or screenshots.
- Document the active profile path, BattlEye path, RCon port, and firewall rules so the next game update can be checked quickly.
- After future updates, verify the server distribution’s BattlEye files rather than copying binaries from another machine.
A successful independent connection is the useful stopping point: it proves that the active file, BattlEye initialization, UDP bind, credentials, and at least one complete network path are correct. Only then should you troubleshoot a separate dashboard, automation tool, or provider-specific integration.
