To make Puppeteer screenshots more consistent between a developer machine and CI, align the Puppeteer and browser versions, operating system and fonts, viewport and device scale, browser mode, and the page state at capture time. Then save that configuration alongside both images so you can trace any remaining differences. These steps reduce avoidable drift, but different operating systems, graphics drivers, or browser builds can still prevent pixel-identical output.
Start by recording what each run actually uses
Before changing the test, capture the configuration for both local and CI runs. Compare the Puppeteer package version, browser version and executable path, operating system or container image, installed fonts, headless mode, viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot options. Keep this metadata with the screenshot artifacts.

This makes it easier to distinguish a capture-size mismatch from a rendering difference. If image dimensions differ, check viewport and scale settings first. If text wraps or glyphs look different, inspect fonts and browser versions. If differences are limited to canvas, WebGL, or compositing-heavy content, investigate browser mode and graphics dependencies.

Puppeteer normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser during installation. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that download may not happen. Local and CI can then use different browsers, or CI can fail to find the expected executable.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Check that the local and CI jobs install the same Puppeteer package version, using the same lockfile and install process.
- Check which browser build Puppeteer launches and whether either environment overrides the executable path.
- If installation scripts are blocked, follow Puppeteer’s documented manual browser installation process, then verify the installed browser matches the version your setup expects.
Do not assume that matching the Puppeteer package alone guarantees matching output: confirm the actual browser build used in each run.
Standardize the operating environment and fonts
For the most controlled comparison, run local and CI captures in the same container image, with the same operating-system family, shared libraries, and font packages. Chrome depends on system libraries, and missing font coverage can change glyph appearance, line wrapping, and element dimensions even when the page and CSS are unchanged.
- Use a consistent container image or otherwise pin the operating-system environment.
- Install the font families and script coverage your pages require.
- Compare font inventories when text differs; a fallback font can alter layout as well as appearance.
- Check that the browser has its required shared libraries and writable profile or cache locations.
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance covers Docker and Linux operational concerns, including dependencies, fonts, sandbox configuration, and writable locations. Treat these as environment requirements, not as screenshot-specific styling fixes.
Set viewport and device scale explicitly
Use the same viewport dimensions and device scale factor for both captures. These settings affect the screenshot’s pixel dimensions and can change responsive breakpoints and layout. Puppeteer documents screen properties, including size and device pixel ratio, in its screenshot guide.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
For example, set a known viewport before navigation and retain the values with the output:
await page.setViewport({
width: 1280,
height: 800,
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
Choose values appropriate to the test rather than copying these sample dimensions. Confirm that local and CI use the same viewport, scale, and full-page or element-capture options.
Keep browser mode and rendering path consistent
Puppeteer runs headless by default. Make sure both environments use the same headless mode and note whether the run uses regular headless Chrome or headless shell. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance notes a GPU-compositing consideration for headless shell. If your page relies on canvas, WebGL, or compositing-sensitive effects, differences in GPU and driver setup may matter.

Do not begin by changing GPU flags for ordinary text or layout differences. First rule out browser, font, viewport, and readiness mismatches; investigate graphics dependencies when the visual symptoms point in that direction.

Wait for the same application state before capture
A navigation event does not necessarily mean asynchronous data, web fonts, images, animations, or timers have settled. Use an application-specific readiness condition so both runs capture the same meaningful state. Puppeteer’s screenshot example waits during navigation, but no single wait condition is correct for every application.
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
Replace the example URL and select a readiness strategy that matches the page. For an app that renders data after navigation, wait for a stable element or application signal instead of relying only on a generic navigation event. Ensure required fonts and assets are ready, and disable or freeze time-based animation and changing content in the test where possible.
Compare artifacts by symptom
| Observed difference | First settings to inspect |
|---|---|
| Image dimensions differ | Viewport dimensions, device scale factor, and screenshot options. |
| Text glyphs or line wrapping differ | Installed font coverage, browser build, and operating-system environment. |
| Canvas, WebGL, or compositing differs | Headless mode, GPU/driver path, and graphics-related dependencies. |
| Content appears missing or changes between runs | Application readiness, asynchronous data, font and asset loading, timers, and animation. |
These are practical triage starting points, not proof that a particular setting caused a difference. Change one variable at a time and retain the new screenshot and metadata so the effect of each adjustment is clear.

Chrome fails to launch in the container
Check the shared libraries and other dependencies required by Chrome, sandbox configuration, and whether profile or cache locations are writable. Use Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide for the relevant container or operating-system setup rather than assuming the screenshot code is at fault.
Text layout differs despite matching CSS
Compare the browser build, OS/container, and installed fonts. Missing coverage can trigger font fallback, which changes glyphs and layout dimensions.
Only graphics-heavy areas differ
Compare headless mode and graphics dependencies, including GPU and driver differences. This is especially relevant for pages using canvas, WebGL, or compositing-sensitive effects.
The capture is intermittently incomplete
Replace a timing guess with a page-specific readiness condition. Check whether data, web fonts, images, or other required assets have finished loading, and control animations or time-dependent content where the test permits it.

If your goal is a screenshot rather than controlling a local Puppeteer runtime, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and an MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Cookie banners and consent overlays, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
