If a PS5 Pro game looks unstable with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), first check whether the issue is limited to one game or also affects the console interface and other games. For artifacts in a particular title, compare the same scene with Enhance PSSR Image Quality turned off. For screen-wide flicker or a failed 4K/120 Hz signal, check the PS5’s video-output settings and the display’s HDMI setup instead. Sony documents these reversible checks, but no single setting is a guaranteed fix for every PSSR or performance problem.
First, identify where the problem appears
Note whether the symptom occurs in one PSSR-compatible game, only in certain scenes or during movement, or across multiple games and the PS5 interface. This is a useful diagnostic distinction, not proof of a particular cause: a single-title problem makes that game’s rendering mode and updates relevant, while a symptom across games or menus makes the display signal and connection more relevant. Sony publishes separate guidance for PSSR and video output, but no definitive symptom-to-cause chart.

- One game or scene: compare the game’s image with the optional PSSR enhancement enabled and disabled, then check the title’s update and support notes.
- Multiple games or the interface: focus first on display-output settings, refresh rate, and the connection to the display.
- No picture or trouble limited to 4K/120 Hz: follow the HDMI-port and output-mode checks below rather than treating it as a PSSR artifact.
How do I change the PSSR image-quality setting?
On supported PS5 Pro consoles, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says this option is on by default and is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. If you see unexpected visual effects, Sony recommends turning it off and comparing the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the setting and switch Enhance PSSR Image Quality off.
- Return to the affected game and compare the same scene, camera angle, and movement as before.
- If the image is better with the option off, leave it off for that title while checking for current PS5 system software and a game update.
Results vary by title; the optional processing is not guaranteed to improve every supported game. Sony’s March 2026 announcement described upgraded PSSR support arriving through a PS5 system software update and said compatible existing titles can use the optional setting. Sony had reported PSSR boosting the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles as of February 27, 2026; that dated figure is not a current count of titles supporting the upgraded PSSR option.

How do I stop PS5 Pro screen flickering?
If flicker affects the display beyond one game, Sony’s resolution guidance recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. These settings limit some output modes and color formats, so change one value at a time and compare. If neither helps, restore the original setting rather than leaving an unnecessary output restriction in place.
For video-output problems when playing 120 Hz games on a monitor or another display device, Sony advises turning off 120 Hz Output. Make that change as a separate test so you can tell whether the refresh-rate mode is involved.
What to check if 4K/120 Hz gives a blank or unstable signal
For a 4K/120 Hz handshake or no-picture problem, check the full signal path: console port, TV port and its settings, PS5 resolution, and Video Transfer Rate. Sony notes that 4K/120 Hz compatibility is still an evolving capability and that compatibility problems can occur.

- Connect the PS5 to a TV HDMI 2.1 port.
- Check the TV’s own HDMI settings for the selected port.
- Set PS5 resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
- Set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic for this compatibility check.
Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with the console; an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 is a compatible alternative for ALLM. A cable or HDMI-port check is relevant to a video-signal problem, not a claim that replacing a cable will fix reconstruction artifacts confined to one game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the problem is specific to one game
Check that game’s update history and support notes, including whether its graphics mode or PSSR support has changed. Record the title, affected scene, selected graphics mode, and whether Enhance PSSR Image Quality is on. If the issue persists, contact the game publisher for a title-specific rendering problem or PlayStation Support for a console or output problem. Updates may address a particular issue, but Sony’s guidance does not promise that an update will fix any individual artifact.
