First identify which feature is lagging: Remote Play streams from your own PS5, while PS Portal cloud streaming delivers eligible games from PlayStation’s service. The connection path and troubleshooting steps differ. For Remote Play, start with console and account settings, then check upload as well as download speed, Wi-Fi congestion, and NAT. For Portal cloud streaming, confirm service eligibility and use the Quick Menu’s network check and resolution setting.
Remote Play or cloud streaming: which connection is lagging?
Remote Play sends a stream from your PS5 to a compatible device, such as a phone, computer, or PlayStation Portal. Cloud streaming sends an eligible game from PlayStation’s servers to a supported device. A problem with one does not necessarily mean the other is affected: Remote Play can fail because of console settings or the route into your home network, while cloud streaming also depends on account, region, and game eligibility.

Fix lag in PS5 Remote Play
1. Check the console, app, and account
Make sure the PS5 is powered on or configured for Remote Play from rest mode, the console and Remote Play app are up to date, and both use the same PlayStation account. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. If connecting while the console is in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

PlayStation’s UK Remote Play troubleshooting guide lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. These are vendor thresholds, not a guarantee of smooth play. A speed test also cannot show every cause of lag, including unstable Wi-Fi or latency.
2. Reduce competition for the connection
Pause large downloads and, if possible, wait until other devices on the network are not using bandwidth heavily. PlayStation recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Remote Play. Check that other devices can use the network; if your computer supports it, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If the PS5 is wired, check that its LAN cable is firmly connected. A wired test can help identify Wi-Fi variability, but it will not correct every possible cause.

3. Check NAT only if connection trouble persists
PlayStation documents UDP port 8572 for Remote Play and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent a connection. If you are unfamiliar with router settings, ask your internet provider, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier for guidance rather than changing firewall or port settings at random. Network configuration and available controls vary by router and provider.

Update the Remote Play app, then restart it; reinstalling it is a further option if it remains broken. On PC or Mac, check whether antivirus software is blocking the app. Some games and functions are incompatible with Remote Play, so an unavailable feature is not necessarily evidence of a network fault.

Fix lag in PS Portal cloud streaming
1. Confirm that the account, region, and game are eligible
Portal cloud streaming requires an adult account with an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, in a supported country or region, and a game currently eligible for streaming on Portal. Catalog membership alone does not establish Portal streaming eligibility; supported games and regions can change.
2. Check network quality and lower the resolution if needed
Update Portal system software. During a stream, open the Quick Menu and select Troubleshooting to check network quality and status. If the connection is unstable, use Max Resolution in the Quick Menu to select 720p. PlayStation’s Canada Portal cloud-streaming support page gives a minimum of 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p; it says to use 1080p with a stable connection. Restart the streaming game after changing the resolution cap so the setting takes effect.

Those Portal support thresholds are not the same as the separate figures on PlayStation’s US cloud-streaming overview: it lists a 5 Mbps session minimum and recommends 13 Mbps for 720p, 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 2160p. Keep the device and context attached to each set of figures; they are not one universal promise of a particular stream quality. PlayStation cautions that “Individual game performance will vary based on the specific game being played, and the quality of connectivity in your network environment.”
When an Ethernet cable or router change makes sense
If testing suggests Wi-Fi variability is the problem, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one straightforward way to test a wired connection on a compatible device. PlayStation specifically suggests trying a wired connection on PC or Mac for Remote Play, and checking the PS5’s LAN cable when the console is wired. You may need an adapter if your device has no Ethernet port; check device compatibility before buying one.

Consider a router change only when the evidence points to home Wi-Fi limitations—for example, if a wired comparison is consistently more stable. PlayStation recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Remote Play, but new hardware is not a fix for account eligibility, service availability, NAT restrictions, or every source of network delay.
