A locked PS5 game usually means the console cannot verify the entitlement for the account currently trying to launch it. Start with the account that purchased the game, confirm the transaction, and identify whether access comes from a purchase, another user’s shared library, or PlayStation Plus. Then enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 being used, restore licenses, and check PlayStation Network and system software before using Safe Mode.
What a lock icon on a PS5 game actually indicates
The padlock does not automatically mean that a purchase vanished or that game sharing is broken. It indicates that the PS5 cannot currently validate a usable license for the account attempting to start the game. The cause may be the wrong user account, an incomplete or different purchase, disabled console sharing, an expired PlayStation Plus entitlement, a PlayStation Network problem, or a local license/database issue.

A game appearing in the home screen or library is not proof that the signed-in user owns it. The first diagnostic question is therefore: which account owns the entitlement, and what type of entitlement is it?

1. Verify the account that purchased the game
Sign in to the PlayStation account used to buy the game. Check that account’s transaction history and confirm that the exact title, edition, and purchase completed. If the transaction is absent, the account may be different from the one originally used, or the game may have been accessed through a subscription rather than bought outright.

Do not use the presence of an installed game as evidence of ownership. A game can remain installed after another account downloaded it, after a console change, or after a subscription entitlement ends. The account that owns the license is the account that must pass the entitlement check.
If the purchase is visible on the owner’s account but the owner also sees a padlock, continue with license restoration and the service checks below. If the transaction is not visible, resolve the account or purchase discrepancy before changing console settings; sharing cannot grant a license that the owner account does not possess.
2. Determine whether PlayStation Plus is involved
PlayStation Plus access has different conditions from a regular purchase. Confirm that the account providing access still has an active PlayStation Plus subscription and that the game remains available through the relevant PlayStation Plus offering. A title can become locked when the subscription is inactive or when the game is no longer available through the service, even if it is still installed on the SSD.

If that account is valid, make sure the PS5 is online long enough to verify the entitlement, then retry the game. If the title was purchased separately, use the purchase-account checks instead of treating it as a subscription problem.
3. Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the correct PS5
When one user owns the game and another user wants to play it on the same console, the owner must activate the current PS5 for sharing. PlayStation’s current feature name is Console Sharing and Offline Play; it is not a separate purchase and it does not transfer ownership to the other account.
- Sign in on the PS5 with the account that owns the game.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
- Remain signed in long enough for the setting to register, then switch to the other user and start the game.
When enabled, other users of that PS5 can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games. They can also use those games when the console is offline, provided the owner’s sharing setting remains active on that console. The setting applies to the PS5 being used, so enabling it on a different console does not unlock the game here. 4. Check whether sharing is still enabled on another PS5
Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time for an account. If the owner recently replaced or added a console, the previous PS5 may still hold the activation. Disable sharing on that older console before enabling it on the current one.
When the old PS5 is available
On the previous console, sign in with the owner account, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, and choose Disable. Return to the PS5 you want to use and repeat the path, choosing Enable.
When the old PS5 is lost, sold, or inaccessible
PlayStation provides a remote option in Account Management to deactivate all devices. Use that option carefully: remote deactivation of all devices is limited to once every six months. It affects device activations broadly, so it should be reserved for situations in which the previous console cannot be reached and the activation cannot otherwise be moved. After the remote action, sign in on the current PS5 and enable Console Sharing and Offline Play there.
5. Restore the PS5 licenses
Restoring licenses refreshes the console’s record of the digital entitlements associated with your account. PlayStation says this process does not affect saved data, installed games, or other console data.
Restore from Settings
- Sign in with the account that owns the game or the subscription entitlement.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select the relevant license or licenses.
- Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game again.
Restore from the game tile
- Highlight the locked game on the home screen or in the game library.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Restore License.
- Retry the game after the confirmation completes.
Use the owner account for this operation. Restoring a license on a different user cannot turn that user into the purchaser, and it will not substitute for enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play when another account owns the title. 6. Check PlayStation Network and PS5 system software
A padlock can appear during a service or network problem because the PS5 cannot contact the service needed to validate a license. Check the PlayStation Network service status before changing account settings repeatedly. If the status page reports an outage or alert affecting account management, gaming, or the PlayStation Store, wait for recovery and try the game again.

Install the latest available PS5 system software as well. System updates can contain fixes for account, licensing, and database behavior. Restart the console after updating, sign in to the owner account, and test the title before moving to more disruptive troubleshooting.
Do not infer a permanent purchase problem from one failed launch during an outage. A temporary service failure can produce the same lock symptom as a missing license, while the underlying purchase remains intact.
7. Use Safe Mode only after the account and service checks
If the transaction, sharing activation, subscription, license restoration, service status, and software version all check out, use the official PS5 Safe Mode troubleshooting step. Start the console in Safe Mode and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. PlayStation’s locked-game troubleshooting flow also describes rebuilding the database as a local corrective step.
Follow the on-screen instructions carefully and allow the process to finish without disconnecting power. This step is intended to repair local cache or database information that may prevent the console from presenting an otherwise valid license correctly. Do not begin by resetting the PS5 or reinstalling everything; the official troubleshooting order places less disruptive checks first. 8. Follow the CE-109245-1 sequence when that code appears
Error code CE-109245-1 means: “The license information of the content can’t be confirmed.” When this exact code appears, PlayStation’s code-specific procedure is a useful focused starting point:
- Restart the PS5.
- Sign in to PlayStation Network with the account that owns the content.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 in use.
After those steps, retry the game. If the code remains, continue with license restoration, service-status and system-software checks, and the Safe Mode database step. The official error-code reference is PlayStation’s CE-109245-1 support page.

Common game-sharing mistakes that keep a purchase locked
- Enabling sharing from the wrong account: the account that bought or claimed the game must perform the activation. Enabling it from the guest’s account does not expose another user’s library.
- Activating the wrong console: the setting belongs to the PS5 on which the other user is trying to play, not automatically to every PS5 associated with the owner account.
- Assuming installation equals ownership: an installed title can belong to another account or to a PlayStation Plus entitlement that is no longer valid.
- Ignoring the one-console limit: a recent console move can leave sharing enabled on the previous PS5.
- Treating every lock as a sharing failure: PlayStation Network outages and license-service interruptions can create the same visual symptom.
- Restoring licenses on the non-owner account: the refresh must be performed by the account whose transaction or subscription supplies the entitlement.
- Resetting too early: a factory reset or full reinstall is not the first-line remedy for a licensing lock and can create unnecessary setup and data-recovery work.
A practical order for diagnosing the lock
Use the following order so each test answers a different question rather than repeating the same action:
- Identify the account that bought or claimed the game.
- Confirm the transaction or the active PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- On the PS5 being used, have that owner account enable Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- If the owner changed consoles, move or remotely deactivate the previous activation, respecting the six-month remote-deactivation limit.
- Restore the relevant licenses.
- Check PlayStation Network status and install the latest PS5 system software.
- Use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the lock persists.
This order starts with entitlement evidence, then corrects the sharing configuration, refreshes local license records, and only afterward uses system-level repair. It avoids buying hardware or storage in an attempt to solve an account-license problem; extra hardware does not create a digital entitlement.
How to tell which fix applies
If the owner account cannot find the transaction, stop at the account check: the console cannot share an entitlement that the supposed owner does not have. If the owner can launch the game but another profile sees a lock, focus on Console Sharing and Offline Play and confirm that it is enabled on this specific PS5. If both users see the lock, restore licenses from the owner account and check PlayStation Network status. If only a PlayStation Plus title is affected, verify the subscription and whether the title remains available before treating it as a purchase problem.
This distinction also explains why buying another console, controller, storage expansion, or network accessory is not a general solution. None of those products supplies a missing digital license. Hardware becomes relevant only if a separate, diagnosed hardware or connection fault exists; the official locked-game steps begin with account and service verification instead.
What to send PlayStation Support if none of this works
Escalate when the owner account shows a valid entitlement, sharing is correctly enabled on the current PS5, licenses have been restored, and the console still reports a lock. Give Support enough information to reproduce the failure:
