Choose a date range and look for the title. A padlock signals a possible license problem, but it does not identify the purchasing account by itself.
The quickest reliable answer is the account whose transaction record contains the game. If no current profile shows a purchase, the game may instead be shared from another account or supplied through PlayStation Plus. Confirm the entitlement type before changing settings.

What the padlock tells you—and what it does not
A padlock beside a game means the PS5 cannot currently validate an entitlement for the account and console combination. It is a symptom of an access or license problem, not proof that somebody else bought the game. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance starts by signing in to the account used to buy the game and checking its transaction history. You therefore need to verify ownership rather than infer it from the icon.

The icon also cannot tell you whether the problem is a temporary service issue, a stale license record, a disabled sharing setting, an inactive subscription or a title that left a subscription catalog. Treat it as a prompt to identify the entitlement, not as an account-identification feature.

There are three common entitlement patterns to separate while you investigate:
| Access type | Where the entitlement is verified | What access depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Individual purchase | The purchasing account’s transaction history | That account’s license being available on the console |
| Shared access | The purchasing account and its Console Sharing and Offline Play setting | The owner enabling sharing on the PS5 |
| PlayStation Plus access | Subscription status and, for catalog titles, current catalog availability | An active subscription and continued eligibility of the title |
Checking the transaction history first prevents you from treating a shared game or a subscription title as a missing purchase. It also prevents you from assuming that the profile that plays the game most often is the profile that paid for it.
Prepare the account check
List every account that may have used the console
Write down the PSN accounts shown on the PS5 and include accounts used by other household members. Consider old profiles that were used when the game was first downloaded, not only the profile currently selected on the home screen. If the game was obtained with a voucher, PlayStation also recommends checking the transaction history of each account associated with the console when the content cannot be found. Do not stop after checking the profile that usually plays the game; the purchase may belong to another user.
Use the account’s sign-in identity rather than the profile nickname as your record. Similar nicknames can make it easy to attribute a purchase to the wrong person, especially on a family console. Note the account that shows the title, the transaction date and whether the result is an outright purchase or an entitlement associated with a membership.
Use the right family role
On the console, only the family manager can view family members’ transaction history. If a child or other family member may have bought the game, have the family manager perform the check or sign in with that account. A regular family member may be unable to see the history needed to prove the purchase even when the transaction exists.
This restriction means that an empty or incomplete view from a non-manager is not conclusive for the whole family. Ask the manager to check the relevant family member’s history, then compare the result with the account that is trying to launch the locked game.
Allow for regional wording
The transaction-history directions cited here come from PlayStation’s Canada English support page, while the locked-game troubleshooting page is from the US English site. Menus, wording and content availability can vary by country. If a label differs, use the equivalent Account, Payment and Subscriptions, or Transaction History option on your local PlayStation account page rather than assuming the purchase is absent.
Regional differences can also affect whether a game appears in a PlayStation Plus catalog. The account-check method is still the same, but follow the local support page when a menu name or availability statement does not match the labels shown here.

Check transaction history on the PS5
- Sign in to the account you want to investigate. Start with the account that normally launches the game, then repeat the process for every other relevant account.
- Open Settings. From the PS5 home screen, select the gear icon.
- Open the account controls. Go to Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions.
- Open Transaction History. This is the record PlayStation uses to show purchases and other account transactions.
- Choose a date range. Set a range broad enough to include when the game was acquired. PlayStation’s account-management history displays the past two years by default, so an older purchase requires an appropriate date selection or another account-management view that covers the acquisition date.
- Search the results for the game. Check the title, transaction date and account currently signed in. A matching entry establishes that this account’s history contains the transaction; it does not mean every account on the console owns the game.
- Repeat for the remaining accounts. Sign out or switch users and run the same path for each account. Record which account shows the title before changing sharing or license settings.
PlayStation’s transaction-history instructions are available at How to check your transaction history on PlayStation Store. Keep the date qualification with your result: a search limited to the default two-year window can miss an older transaction.
How to read the result
A title in the history is evidence that the signed-in account’s record contains the transaction. It does not prove that the current user owns the entitlement, because another profile may be the purchaser. Conversely, failure to find the title on one profile does not prove that nobody on the console bought it.
Read the date as well as the title. If you know approximately when the game was acquired, use that information to widen or narrow the date range. A bundle, edition or add-on may use a different wording from the name displayed on the home screen, so inspect nearby transactions instead of searching only for an exact nickname.
Why checking every account matters
PlayStation’s account records are tied to the account that completed the transaction, not to the physical PS5. Moving the console, changing the primary user or installing the game under a different profile does not move that purchase into the other profile’s history. A complete check therefore means repeating the path for every account associated with the console, including the account that originally downloaded the game and any family account that could have paid for it.
If no account shows the game
Repeat the search instead of assuming the purchase never happened
First make sure the title’s name is the same one used in the store. Some editions or bundled content can have different transaction names. Then repeat the check for every account associated with the PS5, including the family manager’s view of family-member transactions. The absence of a result on one profile only rules out that profile’s visible history; it does not identify the owner.
Check the date range before drawing a conclusion. The online account-management view defaults to the past two years, and an older purchase may be outside that initial window. A narrow range can also hide a transaction made before the date you expect, so expand it when the acquisition date is uncertain.
Check the acquisition route
A game may have been accessed without an individual purchase on the account you are checking. Ask whether the title came from PlayStation Plus or was made available by another account through Console Sharing and Offline Play. Those cases can produce playable access without a purchase entry in the current user’s history.
Do not confuse a download with ownership by the profile that initiated it. The download can be started while one user is signed in even though the license belongs to another account or comes from that account’s membership. Identify who supplied the entitlement before deleting and reinstalling the game.

Use voucher guidance when a code was involved
If the game came from a voucher and the content is missing, PlayStation’s voucher troubleshooting recommends checking each account’s transaction history. Follow the account and code checks on Problems using voucher codes on PlayStation Store. Do not redeem the same code repeatedly on different accounts; first establish which account’s history contains the related entitlement.
A voucher redeemed on the wrong account generally will not appear in another account’s history. Record the account that redeemed it and use that account when checking licenses and sharing. If no account shows a related transaction, keep the code information available for support rather than making repeated redemption attempts.
Interpret a matching purchase correctly
The purchase is on the account you are using
If the title appears in the signed-in account’s history, keep that account selected while following PlayStation’s license troubleshooting. Confirm that the PS5 is online, check PlayStation service status and install any available system-software update before restoring licenses. A transaction entry confirms the account associated with the purchase, but a lock can remain when the console has not refreshed the license.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Launch the game from the purchasing account first. If it works there but remains locked for another profile, the ownership question is settled; the remaining issue is access for the second profile, usually through Console Sharing and Offline Play.
The purchase is on another account
If another household account owns the game, the current user may still be able to play it through PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play. The purchasing user must enable that feature on the PS5. Shared access is different from transferring ownership: the transaction remains attached to the purchasing account, while other users receive eligible access through the console-sharing setting.
Use PlayStation’s instructions for the feature at How to turn on PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play. If the owner has not enabled sharing, seeing the purchase in their history does not by itself unlock the game for a different profile.
Ask the purchasing user to sign in and verify the setting rather than trying to buy the game again on the second account. Sharing changes how eligible users access the existing license; it does not create a second purchase record or change the owner shown in transaction history.
The title came from PlayStation Plus
A PlayStation Plus entitlement is not the same as an individual store purchase. Confirm that the account’s subscription is active. For a catalog game, also confirm that the title is still included in the catalog; a game can become unavailable there even though it was previously playable through the membership. PlayStation’s locked-game troubleshooting page explains these entitlement checks alongside purchase-license checks: How to troubleshoot game downloads from PlayStation Store.

In this situation, an absent purchase transaction is expected rather than proof of a failed purchase. Check the account that held the membership, its current subscription status and the title’s continuing catalog eligibility. If the membership ended or the catalog listing changed, restoring licenses cannot turn that subscription access into permanent ownership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do after ownership is confirmed
Check service status and system software
Before changing licenses, check whether PlayStation services are experiencing an outage and whether the PS5 has a pending system-software update. A service interruption or outdated system can prevent the console from validating an otherwise valid entitlement. These checks are part of PlayStation’s standard locked-game troubleshooting sequence.
Make sure you are checking the same account that appears in the transaction record. A service check cannot correct an account mismatch, and a system update cannot grant access to a title owned by another profile without sharing enabled.

- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.

Restoring licenses does not affect saved data, according to PlayStation. It refreshes the console’s license records; it does not change which account bought the game or convert shared or subscription access into ownership. The complete procedure is documented at How to restore licenses on PlayStation console.
Restore licenses after identifying the entitlement, not as a substitute for checking the account. If the transaction belongs to a different profile, restore licenses while signed in to the owner and then verify sharing for the other user. If the title is from PlayStation Plus, restore licenses only after confirming the membership and catalog conditions still apply.
Recheck the entitlement after restoring
Return to the account that showed the transaction and launch the title from that profile. If another account owns it, verify that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled by the owner. If access came from PlayStation Plus, verify both the active subscription and catalog status. These checks distinguish a refreshed license from an account-selection or eligibility problem.
If the padlock remains, preserve the transaction date, the account used, the entitlement type and the steps already completed. Those details let PlayStation Support distinguish a purchase-license issue from a sharing or membership issue without repeating the entire investigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical decision path
- Padlock, no transaction on the current account: check every other account, including the family manager’s view of family-member history.
- Transaction found on another account: use that account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting if the current user needs access.
- No purchase, but the game was a Plus title: verify the subscription and, for catalog games, continued catalog availability.
- Purchase or entitlement confirmed, but the padlock remains: check service status and system software, then use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Still locked after these checks: keep the transaction date, account name and entitlement type available when contacting PlayStation Support; those details identify which license path has failed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only the active profile: the owner may be another account on the console.
- Using the default date window as a complete record: the two-year default can omit an older acquisition.
- Treating a padlock as proof of a different owner: it only signals that the console cannot validate access at that moment.
- Assuming a download equals a purchase: shared and subscription access can place a playable title on the console without an individual transaction for the current user.
- Restoring licenses before identifying the account: the procedure refreshes records but does not move ownership or enable sharing.
- Ignoring the family-manager role: a non-manager may not be able to see the family history needed for the check.
Limits of what transaction history can prove
Transaction history identifies the account whose record contains the purchase. It does not prove that the currently signed-in user owns the game, and it cannot show that a title is still eligible under a subscription or sharing arrangement. Likewise, a padlock cannot tell you whether the cause is a different account, disabled sharing, an inactive subscription, catalog removal or a license-refresh problem. Treat the icon as the starting symptom, then use the account, sharing and subscription checks in that order.
Best Value
Because the cited support pages are region-specific, local PlayStation pages may use different labels or describe different catalog availability. The underlying method remains the same: locate the account transaction, determine whether access is shared or subscription-based, and refresh licenses only after the entitlement is identified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a padlock tell me which PS5 account bought the game?
No. The padlock indicates a possible access or license problem. Check Transaction History for each relevant account to identify the account whose record contains the purchase.
How far back does PS5 transaction history go?
PlayStation’s account-management history displays the past two years by default. Choose a suitable date range when checking for an older purchase so the default window does not hide it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can another PS5 user play a game bought by someone else?
Possibly. The purchasing account must enable PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play on the console. Shared access is separate from ownership, which remains attached to the purchasing account.
What if the game does not appear in any purchase history?
Check every account, including the family manager’s view of family-member transactions. Then determine whether the title came from a voucher, Console Sharing or PlayStation Plus rather than an individual purchase.
Does PlayStation Plus explain a locked game with no purchase record?
Yes. A Plus title may not have an individual purchase entry. Confirm that the subscription is active and, for catalog games, that the title is still available in the catalog.
Will restoring licenses delete my saves?
No. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect saved data. It refreshes license records but does not change ownership, enable sharing or restore an expired subscription entitlement.
Recommended Free Tools
Who can view a child’s transaction history on the PS5?
Only the family manager can view family members’ transaction history on the console. Have the family manager perform the account check.
What should I give PlayStation Support if the lock remains?
Keep the account name, transaction date, entitlement type, service-status result, system-software status and confirmation that you restored licenses. These details show which license path you have already checked.
The Bottom Line
To check which account bought a locked PS5 game, inspect Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History for every relevant account, using a date range that covers the acquisition. If the purchase is on another profile, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play; if access came from PlayStation Plus, verify the subscription and catalog status. Once the entitlement is confirmed, check service status and software, then use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
