Match the fix to the symptom: use your TV’s Game or low-latency mode for delayed controller response; check the HDMI input and signal path for a blank screen; and verify display, HDCP, and HDR settings when the image appears at the wrong resolution or without HDR. The steps below distinguish standard PS4 troubleshooting from PS4 Pro 4K requirements.
Fix PS4 controller input lag on a TV
Start with the TV’s picture processing. Enable Game mode or the manufacturer’s equivalent low-latency setting for the HDMI input connected to the PS4. The exact name and menu path depend on the TV model.

- Open the picture or display settings for the HDMI input the PS4 uses.
- Turn on Game mode, or select the TV’s low-latency option if it uses another name.
- Test controller response again in the same game or menu.
For applicable Sony TVs, Sony documents settings such as Game mode or “Content type: Game,” but the available controls vary by model and software. Use the Sony TV instructions for your model or the TV’s manual; do not assume one Sony menu path applies to every set. Sony also notes that applications prioritizing lip-sync may behave differently.
Changing HDMI cables, disabling HDCP, or forcing a particular resolution is not an established universal fix for input lag. A replacement cable is relevant when the existing cable is faulty or unsuitable, not as a way to reduce TV processing delay.

Fix a PS4 “No signal” message or blank screen
Work from the simplest signal-path checks to recovery settings. A no-signal screen does not by itself prove the HDMI cable is bad.
- Confirm the input. Make sure the TV and console are on, then select the exact HDMI input where the PS4 is connected.
- Reseat and test the cable. Unplug and firmly reconnect HDMI at both ends. Try another HDMI port on the TV and, if available, a known-good compatible cable. PlayStation recommends testing another cable; for a non-included cable, it specifies compatible High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable classes. A compatible replacement HDMI cable for PS4 is worth considering only if testing points to a cable fault or the current cable is unsuitable.
- Bypass intermediary equipment. Connect the PS4 directly to the TV while testing. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, sound bar, capture device, HDMI switch, or other device in the chain.
- Reset the displayed resolution through Safe Mode. Turn the PS4 off. Press and hold its power button until the second beep, connect the controller to the console by USB, then choose Change Resolution. The console restarts at 480p, which can restore a picture if the TV cannot display the current output mode. Once the image returns, select a resolution the TV supports. PS4 Pro: check HDCP across the whole 4K chain
If the console is a PS4 Pro connected to a 4K TV, check HDCP compatibility at every point in the HDMI path—not only the TV. The display and any receiver, switch, or other intermediary must support the needed HDCP version for the intended output. Sony’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR guidance describes the relevant compatibility checks.

If an incompatible chain prevents a picture, setting HDCP to HDCP 1.40 Only may help diagnose or work around the issue. This can limit output to 1080p and restrict 4K or HDR playback. Use it as a compatibility workaround, not as a general picture-quality or input-lag setting; return HDCP to Automatic after checking the chain.

- Connect the console to the TV’s HDMI port that supports the desired 4K or UHD input mode; some TVs enable enhanced colour or UHD bandwidth separately for individual ports. The setting’s name varies by manufacturer.
- Confirm that the cable is suitable and that any device left in the HDMI chain supports the required signal and HDCP compatibility.
- Check whether the specific game or video supports 4K. A 4K TV alone does not make all content render or play in 4K.
- If you changed HDCP for troubleshooting, restore Automatic once compatibility is resolved.
If the image disappeared after selecting an unsupported display mode, use Safe Mode’s Change Resolution option to restart at 480p, then choose a mode the TV can show.

HDR requires more than an HDR-capable television: the TV’s relevant HDMI input, console settings, signal path, and the game or video must all support it. PlayStation’s published requirements specify an HDR10-capable 2K or 4K TV, a Premium HDMI cable, supported HDR content, and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later.

- Connect the PS4 directly to the TV for HDR troubleshooting, rather than through a receiver or other intermediary.
- Enable HDR or the TV’s enhanced HDMI input mode on the port used by the console, if the TV requires it.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Set both HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
- Open Video Output Information and check whether the PS4 reports the display as HDR-supported. Also verify that the content being played supports HDR.
These settings follow PlayStation’s PS4 HDR instructions. If HDR remains unavailable, check the TV manual for port-specific HDR or enhanced-input requirements and remove any HDMI intermediary while isolating the problem.
