If your PS Portal will not connect or Remote Play is lagging, first check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi. Then verify the Portal’s saved network, confirm Remote Play and rest-mode settings on the PS5, and improve the connection between the Portal, console, and router. These are PlayStation’s recommended checks—not guarantees that a particular speed or setting will eliminate every problem.
Work through the checks in order and try the Portal again after each change. That makes it easier to tell whether the issue is the Wi-Fi network, the Portal’s setup, the PS5, or the network conditions where you are playing.

Why won’t my PS Portal connect to Wi-Fi?
Start by finding out whether the problem is the home network or the Portal. Connect a phone, computer, or another console to the same Wi-Fi network. If those devices cannot get online either, troubleshoot the network or contact your internet provider; a Portal setting is unlikely to resolve an outage affecting everything.

If other devices work but the Portal does not, inspect its saved network setup. PlayStation’s instructions for error code 0x8320011A point to possible Wi-Fi or access-point settings trouble. The precise menu wording can vary by software version or region.

This first check matters because a Portal that cannot join Wi-Fi needs a different fix from one that has joined Wi-Fi but cannot reach the PS5. Avoid changing several settings at once: check the network, make one adjustment, and test again. If only the Portal fails, you can then focus on its connection details or on settings specific to that wireless network.
Check the Portal’s network settings
- Swipe left from the upper-right corner of the Portal screen to open the Quick Menu.
- Open Settings > Network > Internet Connection Setup.
- Check the Wi-Fi network and connection details, and confirm the Portal is attempting to use the network you intend.
- If several devices are connected, temporarily disconnect some and try the Portal again.
- If the issue continues, test the Portal on another Wi-Fi network if one is available. A successful connection elsewhere suggests the original network or its access-point settings may be the cause.
For error 0x8320011A, see PlayStation’s error-code guidance. Testing another network is useful for isolating the fault; it does not by itself identify which router setting needs to change.
If you see that error, treat it as a prompt to check Wi-Fi or access-point settings rather than proof that the Portal is broken. If you cannot change the access point—for example, on a managed or public network—try another available network to see whether the Portal can connect there. If it does, the comparison narrows the problem to the original network, although you may need its administrator or provider to change settings.

Why can’t my PS Portal connect to my PS5?
A working Wi-Fi connection is only one part of Remote Play. The PS5 must have Remote Play enabled, be online, and be associated with the same PlayStation account used on the Portal. If you expect the Portal to wake a PS5 that is in rest mode, two additional power-saving options must be enabled.
Confirm the PS5 and account are ready
- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Check that the Portal and PS5 are signed in with the same PlayStation account.
- Confirm the PS5 can reach the internet, and install any available PS5 system software update.
- If the console is in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
PlayStation’s PS Accessories support guidance covers these Remote Play prerequisites. If the Portal has not connected to this PS5 for a while, first test the connection while you are near the console. That helps separate a basic setup or pairing problem from trouble reaching the console over a longer network path.
Check the rest-mode options only if you want to start the console while it is resting; they are separate from the basic requirement to enable Remote Play. If the PS5 is already on but the Portal cannot connect, still confirm Remote Play is enabled, both devices use the same account, and the console is online. These checks address different parts of the setup, so one being correct does not establish that all the others are.

When the Portal has not connected to that PS5 in some time, a nearby connection test is a useful baseline. If it works nearby but not from another location, the basic console and account setup is more likely to be in place; pay particular attention to the network used at the remote location. If it fails nearby too, revisit the PS5 settings and account match before treating the problem as an issue with distant Wi-Fi.

Lag, stuttering, and interruptions can occur even when the Portal is connected. Remote Play depends on the network path between the console and Portal, so check connection stability and congestion as well as the internet speed figures. PlayStation does not give a universal latency threshold or identify one cause as the source of every lag problem.
A connection can meet a speed recommendation and still feel inconsistent. PlayStation’s figures refer to upload and download speed; they do not promise that a wireless signal is stable, that other devices are not competing for capacity, or that a public network will support the connection. Use the figures as a basic reference, then check the actual Portal connection and the conditions around both devices.
Use the Portal’s network diagnostic
- Open the Portal’s Quick Menu.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Show Network Status.
- Review the displayed connection status. If Wi-Fi appears unstable, try the placement and network changes below, then check the diagnostic again.
The diagnostic is documented in PlayStation’s PS Portal system software information. A status result can help establish whether the Portal is reporting a connection issue, but it does not guarantee that every brief interruption or source of delay will be identified.
Use the diagnostic alongside a short test of Remote Play rather than as the only measure of performance. If the connection status looks unstable, try one of the network changes below and check again. If the status does not point to a problem but gameplay still stutters, reduce competing network use and test a different placement or network when possible. The diagnostic is one clue, not a complete explanation of every delay.

- Pause downloads on other devices while playing. Large transfers can compete for network capacity.
- Where practical, move the Portal and PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them. Thick walls or other barriers can weaken a wireless path.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal if available. PlayStation recommends this band for Portal use.
- If the router automatically switches devices between Wi-Fi bands, PlayStation recommends disabling automatic band steering if that option is available. Router settings and labels differ, so consult the router’s own interface or documentation rather than assuming a particular menu name.
- If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. PlayStation recommends this arrangement when the console cannot use a wired connection.
PlayStation’s network recommendations appear in its Remote Play guidance for PS Portal and its PS Portal troubleshooting guidance. They are practical steps to try, not a promise that a particular router configuration will remove lag.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Make placement changes where they are practical: reducing distance or barriers between the Portal, PS5, and router can improve the wireless path, but the layout of each home is different. If moving the console is inconvenient, try moving the Portal or router within the available space. Retest after each change so you can see whether it helped before making another adjustment.
Do not assume that buying new network equipment is the first step. First check placement, congestion, the available 5 GHz option, and whether the router lets you control band settings. If coverage remains poor where you play after those checks, a router or mesh system with coverage suited to that location may be a future option; PlayStation’s recommendations do not identify a particular model or require an upgrade.
Consider Ethernet for the PS5
PlayStation recommends connecting the PS5 to the internet with a wired connection. Ethernet removes the PS5’s Wi-Fi link from the connection path and may improve stability, but it is not a guaranteed fix: the Portal still relies on its own Wi-Fi connection, and other parts of the network can still be congested or unstable. If cabling is impractical, use Wi-Fi and follow the same-network and placement recommendations above.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A standard Ethernet cable is the straightforward option if the router and console can be connected safely and conveniently. It is an optional way to follow PlayStation’s wired-connection recommendation, not a required purchase and not a promise that lag will disappear. If a cable cannot reach without creating a trip hazard or an awkward setup, Wi-Fi remains the practical alternative.
| PS5 connection | What to know | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet to the router | PlayStation recommends a wired PS5 connection for Remote Play. It may help stability; no result is guaranteed. | Use it when a cable can reach the console safely and conveniently. |
| Wi-Fi | PlayStation’s alternative when wiring is impractical is Wi-Fi; it recommends putting the PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network. | Use it when running a cable is not practical, and check band, placement, and congestion. |
The comparison is mainly between a potentially steadier wired connection for the PS5 and the convenience of not running a cable. Ethernet only changes the console’s link to the network; it does not replace the Portal’s Wi-Fi connection. Whichever setup you use, keep the Portal’s wireless signal and the wider network in mind.
Interpret the speed recommendations carefully
PlayStation’s Singapore troubleshooting page states that a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 5 Mbps is its standard minimum, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. The page does not state a publication year for those figures. Treat them as PlayStation recommendations, not as a guarantee: meeting a speed figure alone does not establish that Wi-Fi is stable or that Remote Play will feel smooth. The same guidance is available at PlayStation Support’s PS Portal troubleshooting page.

Both directions matter in the published recommendation: it specifies upload and download, not just download. The 5 Mbps figure is the stated standard minimum, while 15 Mbps is PlayStation’s recommendation for best performance. A speed result below the recommended figure gives you a reason to examine the connection, but a result above it does not rule out interruptions caused by weak Wi-Fi, congestion, or a network that does not support Portal connections.
What should I do if I’m using public Wi-Fi?
Public networks add limitations that you may not be able to change. Connection quality can vary with location and network load, and PlayStation notes that some public networks may not support Portal connections. Certain 5 GHz public networks may also be unavailable for Portal use depending on regional regulations.
- Complete the Portal’s initial setup at home rather than assuming you can do it on a public network.
- Before relying on a trip connection, test Remote Play near your PS5 on a known working network.
- If a public connection fails, check the Portal’s network status and try a different available network if possible. A failure on one public network does not establish that the Portal or PS5 is faulty.
PlayStation’s regional Portal Remote Play guidance describes the public-network caveats. Availability can depend on regional rules and the network operator, so a public Wi-Fi connection should not be treated as assured.
In particular, a public network’s restrictions are not necessarily something you can solve through Portal or PS5 settings. Even if the network offers 5 GHz Wi-Fi, regional regulations or the operator’s configuration may prevent Portal use. If the same Portal and PS5 work on a known working network, that is useful evidence that the public network is the limiting factor; it is not a reason to assume the Portal will work on every public hotspot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I update the Portal?
After checking the network and PS5 settings, check the Portal’s system software information and install an available update. PlayStation’s US support page lists version 7.0.2 as an update that improves performance and stability. Software versions can change; check the official PS Portal system software page for the version currently offered and its instructions.
That page also documents the network-status diagnostic. An update can address software issues, but do not assume it will correct an outage, weak Wi-Fi, incompatible public network, or disabled PS5 Remote Play setting. Work through the connection checks first so you know what changed if the problem persists.

Follow the instructions on PlayStation’s current software page, since version information changes over time. Once the update is installed, test the same connection again; if the issue remains, return to the network or console checks instead of assuming the update failed to install.
A quick diagnosis by symptom
| What you see | First check | Next useful step |
|---|---|---|
| The Portal and other devices cannot get online | Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. | If it also fails, contact your internet provider or troubleshoot the network itself. |
| Other devices work, but the Portal will not join Wi-Fi | Inspect the Portal’s saved network settings. | Disconnect some devices temporarily or test another Wi-Fi network; check error 0x8320011A guidance if that code appears. |
| The Portal has Wi-Fi but cannot reach the PS5 | Check Remote Play, account match, and whether the PS5 is online. | If the PS5 is in rest mode, enable both network wake options; test nearby if the Portal has not connected in a while. |
| Remote Play connects but stutters | Open Show Network Status. | Pause downloads, improve placement, prefer 5 GHz for the Portal, and consider Ethernet for the PS5. |
| It works at home but not on public Wi-Fi | Consider network support and regional 5 GHz limitations. | Test on a different network; public Wi-Fi may not permit the connection or provide stable service. |
Follow the row that best matches what is happening now, then retest before moving to another category. If several symptoms overlap, start with the broadest check: confirm whether Wi-Fi works on other devices. From there, distinguish a Portal Wi-Fi problem from a PS5 Remote Play setup problem, then consider stability and public-network limitations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my PS Portal connect to Wi-Fi?
First check whether another phone, computer, or console can use the same Wi-Fi. If none can, the issue may affect the network generally, so troubleshoot it or contact your internet provider. If other devices work, check the Portal’s saved network in Quick Menu > Settings > Network > Internet Connection Setup, temporarily disconnect some devices, and try another Wi-Fi network if available. Error 0x8320011A can point to Wi-Fi or access-point settings trouble.

Use Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status, pause other devices’ downloads, and reduce distance or obstructions between the Portal, PS5, and router where practical. PlayStation recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal and a wired PS5 connection; if the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, put it and the Portal on the same Wi-Fi network. PlayStation recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance, but that speed is not a guarantee of smooth play.
Why can’t my PS Portal connect to my PS5?
On the PS5, enable Remote Play under Settings > System > Remote Play. Confirm the Portal and PS5 use the same PlayStation account and that the console is online. To wake a PS5 from rest mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. If the Portal has not connected to the console for a while, test nearby first.
What internet speed does PS Portal Remote Play need?
PlayStation’s Singapore troubleshooting page states a standard minimum of at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. These are recommendations, not guarantees; connection stability, Wi-Fi conditions, and network support also matter.
Can I use PS Portal on public Wi-Fi?
Sometimes, but PlayStation notes that some public networks may not support Portal connections, and some 5 GHz networks may be unavailable depending on regional regulations. Complete initial setup at home and test Remote Play near your PS5 before relying on a public network. A failure on one hotspot does not prove the Portal or PS5 is faulty.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I buy a new router or Ethernet cable to fix PS Portal lag?
Not as a first step. Check placement, congestion, 5 GHz availability, and router band settings before considering new equipment. PlayStation recommends Ethernet for the PS5, so a standard cable may help stability if it can reach safely and conveniently, but it is optional and not a guaranteed fix. Consider a router or mesh system only if coverage remains poor where you play; no particular model is established as a Portal fix.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the problem in order: check whether other devices can use Wi-Fi, verify the Portal’s network and the PS5’s Remote Play prerequisites, then address congestion, placement, and connection type. PlayStation recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download as a standard minimum and at least 15 Mbps for best performance, but neither figure guarantees a smooth session. Public Wi-Fi may not support Portal connections, so test on a known working network before assuming the Portal or PS5 is at fault.
