First identify what your team needs and what the opponent’s plan depends on. Then pick an available champion who can contribute to that plan, adapt your build and approach, and play around the strengths your team still has. A missing favorite can make a fight harder, but it does not decide the result by itself.
The exact substitute depends on the game, mode, matchup, team composition, and current version. Since the title does not name a game, this guide focuses on a strategy that works across champion-based games. League of Legends is used only as a clearly labeled example where official guidance is relevant.

Start with the fight’s needs, not your missing pick
When a preferred champion is banned or otherwise unavailable, the obvious temptation is to search for the closest replacement. That can work if the resemblance also matters to the fight, but similarity alone is a weak selection rule. A backup that feels familiar may not provide what your team needs in this particular encounter; a less similar champion may cover the missing job more effectively.

Is your team short on dependable damage, durability, a way to begin a fight, or an answer to a particular opponent? Those are strategic categories rather than universal game mechanics: different games may use different roles, abilities, and terminology. The point is to decide what contribution is missing before you select a champion.

- Reliable damage: Your team needs a dependable way to pressure or finish opponents. Ask whether the backup can contribute that damage in the situations this fight is likely to create.
- Durability: Your team may need someone able to withstand pressure or preserve space for teammates. Consider whether your other champions can compensate if that sturdiness is absent.
- Initiation: Your team may need a way to start an engagement on favorable terms. If the backup does not fill that role, decide whether another teammate or a different plan can.
- A matchup answer: One opponent, or a key part of the opposing plan, may be the main obstacle. Identify what that threat needs to succeed and whether your choice can help disrupt it.
These needs can overlap, and a team rarely gets every desirable quality from one pick. The practical question is which shortfall is most likely to affect the fight, and whether the rest of the composition can cover the others. If your team already has enough durability but lacks a way to pressure the opponent, choosing another durable champion simply because your main was durable may leave the more urgent problem unresolved.
Read the opposing plan before locking in a backup
A difficult fight is not only a test of individual champion strength. It is also a contest between plans. Consider what the opposing team needs to make its approach work: room to apply pressure, a particular teammate left unchallenged, or an opportunity to engage on its own terms. Then look for an available champion who can interfere with that plan without abandoning your team’s needs.
Riot Games’ discussion of professional League of Legends play describes draft strategy as complex and addresses counters to dominant strategies and the value of multiple strategic options. That is useful context for thinking about a draft, but it is not a universal matchup chart or a claim that a particular pick will win. It is also a discussion of professional play, so its historical balance targets should not be treated as current, general gameplay rules.

For example: “They need to establish pressure before we can respond,” or “Their plan depends on one champion being able to act freely.” Keep it specific to what you can actually observe, rather than guessing at hidden mechanics.
- Identify the point of interference. Ask what would make that plan harder: contesting space, protecting the teammate under pressure, changing when the fight begins, or applying pressure elsewhere. The answer depends on the game and matchup.
- Check whether a candidate can contribute to that interference. A theoretical counter is not useful if you cannot play it reliably or if selecting it creates a larger gap in your own team.
- Keep the team’s needs in view. A pick that disrupts the opponent but leaves your composition unable to do its own job may trade one problem for another.
This avoids a common trap: choosing a champion solely to punish one opponent, then discovering that the rest of the team has no coherent way to take the fight. Counterplay is part of the decision, not the whole decision.
Compare backups on the qualities that matter
When more than one champion is available, compare them against the actual encounter rather than against an abstract ranking. There is no responsible universal answer to “Who is the best substitute?” without knowing the game, mode, matchup, current version, player, and team composition. Use a compact comparison to make the choice concrete:

| Decision axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Role coverage | Does this champion cover the job the team needs most? | A backup should help address the missing contribution, not merely look like the unavailable pick. |
| Matchup response | Can this champion help disrupt the opponent’s plan? | A role fit that cannot affect the central threat may not solve the encounter. |
| Composition fit | Does the rest of the team supply what this champion does not? | A pick can be useful in isolation but leave the overall plan incomplete. |
| Player reliability | Can you make a sound contribution with this champion under pressure? | A theoretically ideal choice is less useful if you cannot execute its role consistently. |
| Adaptability | Can your build or team approach be adjusted to the situation? | Some choices may offer more than one way to contribute, depending on the game. |
This is a decision framework, not a published performance ranking. No verified statistic establishes that a particular substitute, pool size, or selection method guarantees success in difficult fights after a main is banned. A practical choice balances the dimensions rather than maximizing one at the expense of the others.
Make the team plan work with the substitute
Once you choose, update the plan to fit the champion you actually have. Do not assume teammates can use the same approach they would have used around your main. The substitute may change what your team can initiate, how it deals with pressure, or which opponent it can answer. State the intended contribution clearly and agree on how the team will compensate for what is missing.
If your pick does not provide the original initiation
Do not force the same opening just because it was part of the old plan. Check whether another teammate can start the engagement, whether the team can wait for a more favorable opportunity, or whether it should focus on a different way to pressure the opponent. The answer is game- and team-dependent; the general principle is to replace the function or change the plan, rather than pretending the function is still present.
If your pick does not provide the original durability
Review who can safely take pressure and who needs protection. Your team may need to avoid situations that depend on one champion absorbing attention, or teammates may need to take a more deliberate role in preserving space. Do not treat a less durable backup as interchangeable with a sturdier main; plan around the difference.
If your pick offers a different kind of damage or pressure
Ask whether the team can create opportunities for that contribution. A different profile may be useful, but teammates need to know what situations let it matter. If the new pick cannot address the same targets or moments as your main, choose a different target or timing rather than repeating the old assignment by habit.

If the backup does not answer the key opponent directly
Assign the matchup problem to the team instead of assuming your pick must solve it alone. Another teammate may be better placed to challenge that opponent, while you contribute through the role your champion can perform reliably. A team plan that distributes responsibilities can be more coherent than a pick that tries to cover every weakness.
Adapt the build instead of copying your main’s setup
A build is part of the plan, not a reason to force a champion into a job it cannot do. Riot Games’ League of Legends support guidance presents recommended builds as a template and encourages players to experiment to find a build that fits the player and team. That guidance supports thoughtful adaptation; it does not guarantee that any particular adjustment will work, and it should not be read as advice for another game.
Before settling on a setup, ask what the fight demands from your chosen champion and whether the build supports that contribution. Consider the team’s needs, the opponent’s approach, and the strengths you can use reliably. If the default recommendation does not fit those conditions, treat it as a starting point rather than a rule. At the same time, do not change things just to imitate your unavailable champion: an adjustment should support a role or answer a concrete problem.
- Keep the champion’s intended contribution in focus. A build change cannot automatically make a poor role fit into the right pick.
- Adapt to the team and encounter, not to a vague desire to make the backup feel like your main.
- Experiment in lower-pressure situations where possible, so you can learn what a change does before relying on it in a difficult fight.
- Use current, game-specific guidance for exact items, skills, or settings. Those details vary by game and version and cannot be responsibly supplied without knowing which game is meant.
Practice a small, role-appropriate backup pool
If you only practice one champion for an important role, a ban can leave you choosing under pressure with little confidence. Practice a few alternatives that cover the jobs you are most likely to need, rather than collecting a long list of champions you rarely use. This is a practical recommendation, not a pool size prescribed by Riot or a guarantee of results.
Make the pool useful by choosing backups for different situations. One may be a comfortable option that can perform the basic role reliably; another may help answer a recurring matchup or team need. A third can make sense if it addresses a distinct gap you encounter often and you have time to learn it. The best set depends on the game, mode, your skill, and what your teams need—not on a universal number.

- List the main’s usual jobs. Note the role it serves in your team plan and the kinds of fights where you rely on it.
- Find a practiced alternative for the most important job. Choose someone you can use competently, not just a champion that looks strong in a guide or tier list.
- Add coverage for a distinct need. If it is useful, practice another option that responds differently to a common opponent or composition problem.
- Rehearse the team plan as well as the champion. Learn what your team should do when the backup cannot reproduce the main’s contribution.
- Review results by decision quality. Ask whether you identified the right need and made a coherent plan. One outcome alone does not prove that the choice was sound or unsound.
Riot’s professional-play discussion considers champion diversity and strategic options in its own competitive context. That supports the general value of having choices, but it does not prescribe a particular personal practice pool or promise that broader selection alone improves an individual result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a fast decision checklist when the pick is urgent
When there is little time to decide, use the same order every time. This prevents a ban from turning into an emotional selection based on familiarity alone.
- What job did my main provide? State the contribution, not only the champion’s name.
- What is the team missing now? Identify the most consequential gap in the composition or plan.
- What does the opponent need to succeed? Find a realistic way to disrupt that plan.
- Which available champion can cover the most important need? Compare role coverage, matchup response, team fit, reliability, and adaptability.
- What will we do differently? Tell teammates if the substitute changes who initiates, who handles a threat, or how the team approaches the fight.
- Does the build or setup fit this plan? Adapt from a suitable starting point using game- and version-specific information.
If no available choice can do everything the main did, prioritize. Cover the most important team need, delegate another responsibility if possible, and accept that the plan must change. Trying to reproduce every strength of the unavailable champion can lead to a backup that does none of them well.

Choosing only by resemblance
Similar feel can help you execute, but it does not guarantee role coverage or a good matchup. Check whether the resemblance includes the contribution the fight actually needs.

Keeping the old team plan unchanged
The same opening or assignment may no longer make sense when the champion that enabled it is gone. Reassign the job or use a different approach instead of treating the replacement as identical.
Copying the old build by habit
Build recommendations are not a guarantee, and a setup that suited one champion may not suit another. Use the new pick’s contribution and your team’s situation to guide adjustments.
Trying an unfamiliar option for the first time in the highest-pressure fight
Practice backups before relying on them in a difficult encounter. Familiarity with the role and a basic plan can matter more than theoretical suitability that you cannot execute.

Expecting a universal champion recommendation
Without the game, mode, matchup, team composition, and current version, naming a best replacement would overstate what can be known. Use the decision framework first; a specific recommendation requires those details.
What League of Legends guidance can—and cannot—tell you
League of Legends is the only game for which relevant official guidance is established here. Riot Games’ support guidance on choosing a champion describes distinct roles and encourages choosing with roles in mind. It also treats recommended builds as adaptable templates. Those points support role-first selection and situational adjustment in League; they do not identify a single best substitute for an unspecified fight.
Riot’s professional-play article discusses counters, draft complexity, champion presence, and diversity. It is useful for understanding why opponents’ plans and strategic options matter, but it addresses professional balance and is older. Its historical presence thresholds or diversity goals should not be presented as current universal rules, nor as evidence that a backup improves fight success.
No directly relevant verified statistic establishes how often players win after their preferred champion is banned, or which backup strategy produces better outcomes. Accordingly, the guidance here is a decision process rather than a numerical promise. For exact champion, matchup, build, or patch advice, first identify the game and mode and check current game-specific information.
When you need a specific substitute recommendation
To make a concrete recommendation rather than a general framework, provide the game and mode, the champion that is unavailable, the opposing champions or main threat, your teammates’ picks, and the current version if known. Also say which champions you can play comfortably. Those details determine whether the best answer is a role match, a matchup response, a composition fit, or a change in team plan.
