A padlock on a PlayStation Plus game can mean the account lacks access, the game is no longer included in its benefit, or the console needs to refresh its license. Check the account and the game’s entitlement first; then troubleshoot the console in order, starting with service status and license restoration.
First, identify what gives you access to the game
“Claimed” does not always mean the same thing. A monthly game and a Game Catalog title have different access rules, and a game claimed by one account may be shared with other users only through the console’s sharing settings.

Monthly game
PlayStation Plus monthly games are available at no extra cost while the membership is active. If the membership has expired, the game may remain in your library but will not be playable through that benefit until membership access is restored. See PlayStation’s monthly games guidance.

Game Catalog access is included with Extra and Premium, while Premium also includes the Classics Catalog. A catalog game must still be available and your membership must include the relevant catalog. Downloading it earlier or seeing it in your library does not guarantee continuing access if it has left the catalog. Check the current catalog and plan details at PlayStation Plus.

Game owned or claimed by another account
If a different account on the console bought or claimed the game, check that account’s entitlement and sharing setup. On PS5, sharing depends on Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4, check whether the owner account has activated the console as its primary PS4. PlayStation’s locked-game troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Sign in to the account that claimed or bought the game. If it was a purchase or voucher redemption, check that account’s transaction history to confirm the entitlement.
- Verify the benefit still applies. Confirm the PS Plus membership is active for a monthly game, or that the plan and current catalog listing cover a catalog title. If another account supplies access, verify its sharing arrangement.
- Check PlayStation Network service status. If the status page reports an alert, wait for service to recover and try launching the game again.
- Update console system software. Install the latest available update for your PS5 or PS4 before moving on to recovery steps.
- Restore licenses. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the relevant licenses, and restore them. You can also open the game’s options menu from the home screen or library and choose Restore License. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect your data. See the license restoration instructions.
- Check sharing settings if access comes from another account. On PS5, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled for the account that owns the game. On PS4, verify that account’s primary-console activation.
- Use Safe Mode only if the earlier checks do not solve it. PlayStation’s locked-game guidance recommends Clear Cache and Rebuild Database on PS5; on PS4, it recommends Rebuild Database if needed. Follow the current official console instructions before using Safe Mode.
Why restoring licenses may help—but cannot restore an expired benefit
A license problem can cause a padlock even when you have a valid entitlement, so restoring licenses is a useful console-side step. It is separate from checking the account, membership, and catalog status: restoring licenses does not renew a subscription or make a removed catalog game eligible again. PlayStation’s padlock guidance specifically distinguishes license restoration from PS Plus subscription expiration.

If the game is still locked
Contact PlayStation Support if the account has the right to use the game, the relevant sharing settings are correct, and the console checks have not resolved the lock. Include the exact error code or message, a concise description of what you did before the problem appeared, and the steps that reproduce it. Add a screenshot or video if possible. For a PS4 download issue, record the date and time of the attempt as well.
