Then restart the device and router, update the app and device software, and check account, network, or TV-connection issues that match your setup. Work through the steps below in order; avoid a factory reset unless the less disruptive fixes fail.
1. Check the device’s internet connection
Open the playback device’s network settings and confirm it is connected to the internet. If it uses Wi-Fi, check that it is connected to the right network and that the password is correct. A device can show a Wi-Fi connection to the router while still having trouble reaching the internet.

If Prime Video reports a connection error, restart both the playback device and your network equipment, such as the modem and router. Amazon’s connected-device connection guidance says that an internet connection problem can trigger an error in the Prime Video app.

This is a specific possibility to investigate when playback changes with the network—not a general explanation for every buffering problem.

Run network diagnostics on Fire TV
On compatible Fire TV devices, open Settings > Network or use the diagnostics option shown with a connection error. Depending on the model, you may see Run Speed Test or advanced connection information. Menu names and tools vary. Amazon’s Fire TV connection troubleshooting also suggests restarting Fire TV, toggling Wi-Fi, or forgetting the network and reconnecting.
2. Restart Prime Video and install updates
- Close Prime Video. If you are watching in a browser, close the tab or browser as well.
- Restart the device. Amazon’s general playback guidance recommends waiting at least 60 seconds before powering it back on.
- Check for and install available updates for the device, browser, and Prime Video app.
- Open Prime Video again and try the title.
On Fire TV, you can restart through its settings or unplug it. Amazon’s general playback instructions specify waiting one minute before reconnecting power, while its Fire TV network guide gives a 10-second unplug instruction for connection troubleshooting. Follow the procedure relevant to your issue and device rather than treating either interval as universal.

3. Check playback settings, account status, and other network use
For errors while playing a title, Amazon recommends checking these conditions:
- Set the device’s date and time to automatic.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy service while testing playback.
- Pause other internet activity, especially downloads or streaming on other devices. Amazon’s playback troubleshooting page includes this advice.
- Check whether the same title is already playing on two other devices. Amazon says the same title can be streamed to two devices at a time.
If a purchased title will not play on Fire TV, check whether the purchase order completed before troubleshooting the app further.

Clear Prime Video data on Fire TV
If the problem appears limited to the Fire TV app, open Settings > Applications, select Prime Video, and clear its cache and data. The precise menu labels can vary by Fire TV version. Clearing app data may require signing in again.
If that does not help, Amazon’s general guidance includes uninstalling and reinstalling Prime Video where the device allows it. Treat a factory reset as a last resort: it removes account information and downloaded content from apps on the device. Before resetting, make sure you can sign in again and preserve anything you can.

4. Check HDMI and display compatibility for external devices
If a streaming box or other external device connects to your TV or display, check that the HDMI connection supports the content format you are trying to watch. Amazon specifies HDCP 1.4 for HD playback and HDCP 2.2 for UHD/HDR playback on external-device setups. Dolby Vision also requires the display and any additional connected device to support Dolby Vision.

These checks apply to playback through connected hardware. They are not a likely explanation for ordinary buffering when the network and video playback are otherwise working.

5. Use the error code to get help
Amazon’s “Issues While Playing Prime Video Titles” guidance lists codes including 1007, 1022, 5001, 7003, 7005, 7031, 7135, 7202, 7203, 7204, 7206, 7207, 7230, 7250, 7251, 7301, 7303, 7305, 7306, 8020, 9003, and 9074. The shared troubleshooting steps do not diagnose each code individually. If the steps above do not resolve the issue, note the exact code and contact Amazon through its Prime Video playback support page. If playback works on a different network but not your usual one, ask your ISP to check the DNS condition described earlier.
