For a French tip made with regular nail polish, use a small cleanup brush lightly dampened with acetone or nail polish remover to refine a wobbly edge or lift stray polish. If the cleanup disturbs the sheer base color, touch it up, let the repair dry, then apply top coat. These instructions are for regular polish—not a correction method for cured gel.
Choose the repair based on the mistake
- The white edge is wobbly: Carefully trace the uneven boundary with a small cleanup brush and a little remover to reshape the line.
- Polish is outside the tip: Lift the stray polish with the brush. Cleanup is easier while regular polish is still wet, according to Essie’s French manicure instructions.
- The smudge has dragged into the base: Remove only what you need to correct the edge, then touch up the sheer base shade if it looks disturbed. If polish has been smeared across much of the nail, a partial touch-up or repaint may be simpler; there is no established threshold for when to choose one.
L’Oréal Paris’s French manicure guide also recommends a small brush dipped in acetone for correcting an imperfect white-tip edge and notes that the base shade may need retouching afterward.

Repair a regular-polish French tip
- Check the polish type. Continue only if you used regular polish. If you used gel, follow the directions for that gel product; the cleanup advice here does not establish how to safely correct cured gel.
- Dampen a small cleanup brush. Use a small amount of acetone or nail polish remover. Avoid soaking the brush, so you can work on the edge without spreading remover across the nail.
- Refine the line or remove stray polish. Use small, controlled strokes along the boundary. Work carefully, especially if the polish is already dry; Essie notes that stray-polish cleanup is easier while it is wet.
- Touch up the base if needed. If cleanup has thinned or removed the sheer base color, apply a small amount to the affected area.
- Let the repair dry, then seal it. Apply top coat once the polish has dried, following the polish instructions. Essie recommends cuticle oil and hand cream after the manicure is dry.
Use acetone carefully
Keep acetone off the surrounding skin as much as possible, and wash your hands if it gets on your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology gives these precautions in its guidance on gel removal, not as a complete protocol for routine spot cleanup: Dermatologist’s secret for removing gel nail polish at home. Make the next line easier to draw
If drawing the white edge freehand is difficult, use French manicure guide stickers when applying a fresh tip. They help section off the tip area; they are not a fix for a smudge that has already dried. L’Oréal Paris describes guides as an option for shaping the tip.
