If Playwright screenshots omit images, wait for the image or application state you actually need—not just for navigation to finish. Lazy-loaded images may need to be scrolled into view, and images added after a click or keystroke need a readiness check after that interaction. Then verify that each target image loaded successfully before capturing.
Why images can be missing from a screenshot
Navigation completion and image readiness are different conditions. Playwright navigation can wait for states such as commit, domcontentloaded, load, or networkidle. None means, by itself, that every image your screenshot needs has rendered.

A page may defer loading an image until it is near the viewport. A full-page screenshot should not be treated as proof that the page’s lazy-loading logic was triggered. Scroll the relevant content into view, then wait for the image to load.

A historical Playwright issue report described missing lazy-loaded images in Firefox and Mobile Safari despite using networkidle. It is an individual report, not evidence that every current Playwright version or page has this problem.
Images inserted after an interaction
Search suggestions, galleries, and similar interfaces may add images only after a user types or clicks. A wait performed after the initial navigation says nothing about content created later. Perform the action first, then wait for the resulting UI state and image.

Wait for the target image before capturing
For a known <img>, check both that it is visible and that the browser reports a successful image load. The following JavaScript/TypeScript pattern uses Playwright Test’s expect assertion:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });complete alone is not sufficient: it can be true when an image failed. A positive naturalWidth is a useful check that the browser decoded an image with intrinsic width. Choose a locator and timeout appropriate to the app, and confirm the behavior with the Playwright version installed in your project. This is an implementation pattern based on image readiness checks, not a recipe prescribed by the Playwright documentation.

For lazy-loaded content
Scroll the relevant image or section into view before running the image check. If the image is inside a scrollable panel, scroll that panel rather than only the page. For long pages, bring relevant sections into view in sequence; do not assume that requesting a full-page screenshot will activate every viewport-triggered loader.
For content revealed by an action
Run the click, typing, or other action that creates the content. Then wait for the expected locator to appear and check the resulting image’s load state. The wait belongs after the action that changes the page, not only after page.goto().

Avoid arbitrary sleeps as the only wait
A fixed waitForTimeout can hide a race on a fast run and still be too short on a slow one. If an application-specific animation needs a brief delay, pair it with an assertion for the state that must be ready before capture.
Diagnose the image that is missing
- Identify the image type. Determine whether it is an
<img>, a CSS background, or content inside an iframe or shadow tree. ThenaturalWidthcheck applies to<img>elements, not to CSS backgrounds. - Record the image state immediately before capture. For an
<img>, inspectsrc,currentSrc,complete, andnaturalWidth. A useful failure message should include the final URL and the values of these properties. - Check browser diagnostics. Look for failed image requests, non-success responses, and console errors. A visible container does not prove its intended image pixels loaded.
- Trigger the relevant loading condition. Scroll lazy content into view, or perform the interaction that inserts it, then wait for the image outcome.
- Reproduce in the browser where the result differs. Browser-specific behavior is possible; an issue report is a clue to investigate, not proof of a current universal defect.
- If the image is confirmed loaded but the capture is still blank, isolate the capture problem. Reduce the page to a minimal case and inspect a trace, video, or screenshot behavior. A separate issue report describes a blank
toHaveScreenshotresult despite a visible-locator wait; do not assume image timing is the cause without checking.
Use screenshot assertions for visual stability
In Playwright Test, toHaveScreenshot waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the last screenshot with the expected image. That helps stabilize visual comparisons, but it does not replace an application-specific wait for an image that appears late or only after scrolling. See the Playwright PageAssertions documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does waiting for `load` guarantee every image is ready?
No. It does not establish that lazy-loaded images or images inserted by a later interaction have loaded. Check the target image or application state.
Can `toHaveScreenshot` replace a wait for a lazy-loaded image?
No. It stabilizes visual comparison after screenshots match, but does not itself ensure the application has triggered and loaded the image.
