A full-page screenshot does not guarantee that every row in a virtualized list appears. Virtualized lists usually render only the rows near the current viewport, and expanding a screenshot to the page’s full scroll height does not necessarily scroll the real viewport to make off-screen rows render. To capture every row, scroll the list’s actual container in overlapping increments, wait for each section to render, and capture the visible sections. Then check for skipped, duplicated, or clipped rows.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss rows
Playwright’s fullPage screenshot option captures the page’s full scrollable extent. A virtualized list, however, may keep only a small window of rows in the DOM and replace those rows as the list scrolls. The Playwright discussion of screenshot behavior notes that a full-page capture does not move the visual viewport through the page to trigger that scroll-dependent rendering. Rows outside the virtualizer’s rendered window can therefore be absent from the image. Playwright screenshot documentation describes full-page capture; the behavior of viewport-based rendering is discussed in this Playwright issue.

Choose what “full” means
- One tall image: If the application offers a safe capture mode that temporarily disables virtualization or renders all rows, it may produce a single image. Verify that doing so preserves row order, widths, sticky headers, and other layout. Whether an app supports this is application-specific.
- Every row, with layout intact: Scroll the list’s real container and capture overlapping visible sections. The result is a sequence of images that can be reviewed individually or assembled if needed.
- Only the page’s ordinary content: For a non-virtualized page, a standard full-page screenshot is appropriate.
Capture a virtualized list with Playwright
1. Find the element that actually scrolls
Determine whether the document viewport scrolls or the list sits inside its own scrollable panel. A page screenshot and an element screenshot are different capture operations: Playwright supports both full-page page screenshots and screenshots of a particular element. See the screenshot guide and locator screenshot API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the selector for the scroll container, not automatically the table or an outer page wrapper. If the list is nested, scrolling the document may leave the list untouched.

2. Scroll in overlapping steps and capture each segment
This illustrative JavaScript pattern measures the container, scrolls it in increments slightly shorter than its viewport, and captures the visible element. Replace the selector, settling condition, and overlap for your application. The example is a practical approach inferred from viewport-based rendering; it is not a universal virtual-list recipe specified by Playwright.
const list = page.locator('[data-testid="virtual-list"]');
const images = [];
// App-specific: measure the list's scrollable range and viewport.
const metrics = await list.evaluate(el => ({
scrollHeight: el.scrollHeight,
clientHeight: el.clientHeight,
}));
const overlap = 80;
const step = Math.max(1, metrics.clientHeight - overlap);
for (let top = 0; top < metrics.scrollHeight; top += step) {
await list.evaluate((el, y) => { el.scrollTop = y; }, top);
// Replace this with an app-specific wait for rows, data, and layout to settle.
await page.waitForTimeout(100);
images.push(await list.screenshot());
}
The timeout is only a placeholder, not a guarantee that rendering has completed. Prefer a condition tied to your app—for example, a particular row becoming visible or a loading indicator disappearing—when one is available. If scrolling triggers more data to load, the original scrollHeight may become stale: remeasure during the loop or stop when the app’s reliable end-of-list condition is met.

3. Verify coverage before treating the capture as complete
- Check that the first and last expected rows are present.
- Compare adjacent segments and confirm the overlap is enough to align them.
- Look for rows repeated at the seam, skipped between captures, or clipped at an edge.
- Wait for asynchronous data, images, and layout changes before capturing a segment.
- Inspect sticky headers and variable-height rows; they can affect alignment even when the scroll increments are regular.
Use ordinary full-page capture for non-virtualized pages
For a page whose content is already rendered across its scrollable extent, Playwright’s standard full-page call is:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
That captures the full scrollable page, but it should not be treated as a way to force a virtualizer to render every row. The API also supports element screenshots and options such as clipping and scale; those options do not replace scrolling through a virtualized list. See the Page screenshot API.

ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A request can return an image or PDF, but an API screenshot should not be assumed to collect every virtualized row: for that, the page still needs an app-supported all-rows mode or a capture flow that scrolls and captures segments. For ordinary page captures, a one-call request looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshooting
The screenshot has a large blank area or missing rows
Likely cause: The capture expanded the page image without scrolling the list’s actual container, so off-screen virtual rows never rendered. Fix: Identify the list’s scroll owner, scroll that element in steps, and capture the rendered sections.

Rows repeat or disappear at segment boundaries
Likely cause: The increments or overlap do not match the rendered content, or variable-height rows and sticky elements change the apparent seam. Fix: Increase overlap, wait for layout to settle, and compare adjacent captures against visible row identifiers rather than assuming fixed row heights.
The last records are missing
Likely cause: More records load during scrolling, making an initial scroll-height measurement obsolete. Fix: Recompute the scroll range as the list grows, and end only when the application indicates there is no more data or the final expected row is present.
A fixed wait still captures loading content
Likely cause: A fixed delay is shorter than the app’s data or rendering delay. Fix: Replace the placeholder timeout with an application-specific wait condition, such as the target row appearing or a loading indicator disappearing.

Capture-method trade-offs
| Method | What it gives you | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright full-page screenshot | One image of the page’s full scrollable extent | Does not by itself scroll the real viewport to trigger virtualized rows |
| Scroll and capture segments | Captures rows as they enter the virtualizer’s rendered window | Requires app-specific settling and end-of-list checks; seams need verification |
| Temporarily render all rows | May allow a single image containing all rows | Only suitable if the app supports it and the altered layout remains faithful |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright’s fullPage option capture every row in a virtualized table?
Not necessarily. It captures the full scrollable page extent, but does not by itself scroll the viewport through the list to trigger rendering of rows outside the virtualizer’s window.

Quick Recap
Should I stitch the captured segments into one image?
Only if a single image is required. Preserve the original segments until you have checked overlap and continuity; variable heights, sticky headers, and dynamic content can make seams difficult to align.
