Which Playwright MCP timeout should you increase?
Read the tool error and the calls immediately before it. A screenshot workflow can wait on navigation, an action such as a click, MCP’s post-action settling, or an explicit readiness wait. Those stages use different timeout controls; a screenshot call itself does not have a separately documented configurable timeout in the MCP screenshot reference.

These are defaults documented by Playwright MCP; check the version of the server you are actually running. They are not guarantees that any particular site will finish in that time, and there is no universally correct replacement value.

Set the appropriate CLI flag or environment variable in the way your MCP host launches the server. Client interfaces differ: not every host exposes server launch options. After changing the configuration, restart or reconnect the server as the host requires and confirm the effective setting. Do not raise all three limits simply because a screenshot failed; that can delay a useful failure without addressing its cause.

How do you wait for a slow page before taking a screenshot?
Wait for the content the image needs, not for an arbitrary amount of time. Playwright MCP’s browser_wait_for can wait for relevant text to appear or disappear. When text matching is insufficient, its waiting guide also describes selector waits and custom conditions, including a JavaScript predicate or a specific response using browser_run_code_unsafe.
- Identify a visible, page-specific signal that means the needed content is ready, such as a result heading or a loaded-state label.
- Use
browser_wait_forfor relevant text, or a selector, predicate, or response condition when the page requires a more precise signal. - Take the screenshot after that condition is met.
A readiness signal should correspond to what must appear in the capture. For example, the page’s initial heading may load before a delayed chart or product image; waiting for the heading alone would not establish that the later visual element is ready.

Why not use a fixed sleep?
A fixed delay can be useful while debugging, but it is a poor production readiness check: it may waste time on a fast load and still be too short on a slow one. Playwright says page.waitForTimeout() should be used only for debugging, not in production, and recommends locator actions and web assertions that wait for conditions.

Not as the default. Playwright supports the navigation wait conditions commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle. The last means there have been no network connections for at least 500 ms, but ongoing background requests can make it a poor proxy for whether the specific screenshot content is ready. Playwright’s API documentation discourages using networkidle for tests and recommends readiness assertions instead.

A practical troubleshooting approach is to wait for the earliest lifecycle event that suits the task, then explicitly wait for the required content. The right event depends on the site and capture goal.
Choose the right screenshot scope
- Viewport: the visible browser area; this is the default screenshot mode.
- One element: use the screenshot tool’s
targetoption when only a particular element is needed. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. It cannot be combined withtarget. - Text or structure: request an accessibility snapshot rather than a screenshot when visual appearance is not what you need to inspect.
Full-page capture can take longer and produce a larger image than a viewport or element capture. Use it only when the entire scrollable page is part of the deliverable.

If the targeted fix does not work
Collect the MCP server version, host/client, exact timeout error, failing tool call, effective startup flags or environment variables, and screenshot mode. Then inspect browser logs and network behavior. The host client may also impose a request deadline separate from server settings; the available documentation does not establish one universal client deadline or a guaranteed remedy for blocked, failed, or indefinitely loading sites.
