Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Grep error reported while running a Play Integrity Fix or PlayIntegrityFork script is usually caused by a quoting problem in the module’s autopif.sh file. A September 23, 2026 troubleshooting article from DroidWin reports that removing one stray backslash before a quote in a search pattern clears it. That fix is reported guidance, not a maintainer-confirmed patch, so check the exact line on your device before you change anything.
What this error is, and what it is not
A Grep error during a script run is a shell problem. It means a command inside the module’s script did not parse or match the way it was written. It is not, by itself, a verdict from Google’s Play Integrity API. A device can show a Grep error and still pass its integrity checks, and a device can fail a verdict with no Grep error at all. Keep those two problems separate before you start editing files.

The reported case involves the data-icon search pattern in /data/adb/modules/playintegrityfix/autopif.sh. The DroidWin article states that the pattern was written with an escaped quote, data-icon="preview, and that it should read data-icon="preview. Its before-and-after example changes only that fragment.
The reported fix, step by step
Work through these steps in order. Do not skip the backup.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Back up the device. DroidWin recommends a complete device backup before editing. A backup of only the module folder is less safe, because a bad edit can affect the module’s configuration as well as the script.
- Locate the installed script. Open
/data/adb/modules/playintegrityfix/autopif.shwith a root-capable file manager, your root manager’s script or file interface, or a root shell. If your fork installs under a different module name, use that folder instead. - Find the
data-iconline. From a root shell you can rungrep -n 'data-icon' /data/adb/modules/playintegrityfix/autopif.shto list matching lines with their line numbers, without changing anything. - Compare the line to the reported version. Only continue if the pattern reads
data-icon="preview. Remove the backslash directly before the quote so it readsdata-icon="preview. Leave every other character alone. - Save the file and rerun the action. Run the same module action or script that produced the Grep error. If the line differs from the report, or the error remains, stop editing and check your fork’s documentation and logs instead.
If you restore the backup at any point, the device returns to its pre-edit state, and you can then investigate without the script change in place.
Editing methods compared
The DroidWin article suggests a root-capable file manager. The PlayIntegrityFork documentation describes running scripts from a root manager action, a root prompt, or a supported file explorer. These are software methods rather than products, and the right one depends on what you can verify.

| Method | Can you see the exact shell text? | Can you verify the line number before saving? | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Root-capable file manager | Yes, if it opens plain text without reformatting | Usually, through an editor view with line numbers | Some managers add invisible characters or save with a different encoding |
| Root manager script or file interface | Depends on the manager | Often limited | Feature availability varies by root manager and version |
Root shell (su then a terminal editor) |
Yes | Yes, with grep -n before editing |
Requires comfort with a terminal; a mistyped command can change more than intended |
Whichever method you use, confirm that the file is saved as plain text and that the surrounding lines are unchanged.
Tell this error apart from a failed integrity verdict
Readers often arrive here after seeing a failing verdict, so it helps to name the symptoms. The PlayIntegrityFork documentation lists separate troubleshooting topics for failing BASIC verdicts, failing DEVICE verdicts, failing Play Protect or Play Store certification, module conflicts, and module logs. Each one has its own cause.

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- Grep error in a script: the message comes from a shell command in the module’s script. The reported fix above applies here if your line matches.
- Failing BASIC or DEVICE verdict: the app-side check reports a result. Editing
autopif.shdoes not address this on its own. Follow the project’s verdict troubleshooting instead. - Play Protect or Play Store certification failure: this points to the device’s certification state or app-side settings, not to a quoting error.
Broader troubleshooting when the line does not match
If your autopif.sh does not contain the reported pattern, the cause is probably a different version or fork. Start with the logs. The PlayIntegrityFork documentation recommends reading module output with a command such as adb shell "logcat | grep 'PIF/'" from a computer, or an equivalent command in a root shell on the device. The log lines show which step failed.
The same documentation also describes a common module conflict. If Enforce DenyList is enabled in Magisk, Google Play Services should not be on the DenyList. Check that setting before you assume the script is at fault. These steps are the project’s general recommendations; they are not a proven fix for the quoting error described above.

What is established, and what is not
The quote-character fix is documented in one troubleshooting article dated September 23, 2026, and it has not been confirmed in a maintainer release note. No prevalence figure for this error is published, so you cannot judge how common it is. Whether the same line exists in every installed version or fork is not established. Treat the fix as a reasonable first check on a matching line, and rely on your installed fork’s documentation and logs for anything beyond that.
