Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn a Pixel 9, open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver, switch on Use screen saver, choose what to show, and set When to show to While charging or While upright and charging. To test it, tap Use screen saver on that settings page. For normal automatic startup, let the display time out while the phone meets the selected charging condition—Google says turning off the phone with the Power button prevents the screen saver from starting.
Fix the startup problem in this order
A Pixel 9 screen saver is configured around charging and the screen’s timeout; it is not simply another lock screen or an always-on display. Check the setting, charging condition, and way you turn off the display before changing anything else. This order matters: the preview can show whether the selected screen saver is configured to display, while the normal test checks whether the phone meets its automatic start conditions.

- Enable the feature. Open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and turn on Use screen saver. If it is already on, leave it enabled while you check the remaining settings. If the toggle is off, the phone is not set to use a screen saver, regardless of the content selected below it.
- Check when it is allowed to start. Under When to show, select While charging or While upright and charging. The phone must be charging for either condition; the second choice also makes the phone’s upright position relevant. If you expect the saver to run while the phone is lying flat, the upright option may not match that use.
- Check the wireless-only restriction. If Restrict to wireless charging is enabled, the screen saver is limited to wireless charging. Test it while wirelessly charging, or turn off the restriction if you want it to work with other charging methods too. This setting adds a requirement; wireless charging is not otherwise necessary for the screen saver.
- Let the screen time out. Leave the phone charging under the selected condition and wait for the display timeout. Do not press the Power button to turn off the screen as your test: Google’s Pixel Phone Help says, “If you turn off your phone with the Power button, your screen saver won’t start.” The screen needs to time out naturally while the charging and positioning conditions are met.
- Use the built-in preview. Tap Use screen saver in the screen-saver settings to check the selected configuration without waiting for the normal timeout. If the preview works but the screen saver does not appear during ordinary use, recheck the charging condition and let the screen time out rather than using the Power button. If the preview shows the wrong item, focus next on the selected content and active screen savers.
For a clean test, change one relevant setting at a time. First verify that the feature is enabled, then test under the chosen charging condition. If you use the upright option, position the phone upright while charging; if wireless-only restriction is on, use wireless charging for the test. Wait for the display to time out without pressing Power. A test that does not meet the selected conditions cannot tell you whether the saver itself is misconfigured.
Diagnose what you see
| Symptom | Check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears during normal use | Whether Use screen saver is on; the selected When to show condition; wireless-only restriction; how the display was turned off. | Enable the feature, satisfy the chosen charging condition, test any wireless restriction, then let the screen time out. Use the settings preview to separate a content/configuration issue from a normal-start issue. |
| The preview works, but the normal screen saver does not start | Whether the phone is charging in the required way and whether the display was allowed to time out. | Repeat the test under the exact selected condition. If wireless-only restriction is on, use wireless charging or disable that restriction. Also verify that you did not use the Power button to turn off the display. |
| A different clock, photo, or other item appears | The selected screen saver and whether more than one saver is active. | Review the choices on the setup screen, select the intended content, and swipe left or right at the screen edge to switch between active screen savers. |
| Photos or weather are missing or incomplete | The selected content source and its access permissions. | Review the Photos source/settings and confirm that the personal photo frame has access to photos and media. For real-time weather, Google specifies location permission set to Always allow. |
| The screen saver changes in a dim room or goes dark | Low light mode in the screen-saver settings. | Choose whether low-light behavior should switch to a low-light clock or turn the screen off. Google says the low-light clock is the default when the environment is dim. |
| The phone has display symptoms beyond the saver | Whether the display flickers, shows lines, fails to turn on, or has visible physical damage. | Those are screen-appearance or hardware concerns, not ordinary screen-saver settings. Use Google’s separate screen-appearance guidance rather than treating them as a screen-saver configuration problem. |
The table is a way to separate two different complaints. “It never starts” usually calls for checking the toggle, the selected charging condition, the timeout, and Power-button behavior. “It starts but shows the wrong thing” calls for checking the selected saver, its source, and whether multiple savers are active. “It goes dark in a dim room” points to low-light behavior. These checks address the documented settings; they do not establish a deeper recovery procedure for a source that remains unavailable after its configuration and permissions are checked.

Choose the right start condition
The documented choices differ by when the phone is positioned, not by a published reliability ranking. Select While charging if you want the screen saver while charging without requiring the phone to be upright. Choose While upright and charging if you want both conditions. If Restrict to wireless charging is enabled, wireless charging becomes an additional requirement; it is not necessary for screen savers generally.
In practical terms, choose the condition that matches how the Pixel 9 will be used at the time you expect the saver to appear. If it will sit flat on a charger, While charging avoids making upright positioning part of the requirement. If you want the screen saver only when the phone is standing upright as it charges, select While upright and charging. The available guidance does not describe either option as faster, more reliable, or better for battery life.
Google lists Pixel 9 as supporting Qi-certified fast wireless charging, but that hardware capability does not mean wireless charging is required. It matters to troubleshooting only when the wireless-only restriction is enabled or when you are deliberately testing the screen saver while wirelessly charging. If you choose to use a wireless charger, confirm that the particular charger is compatible with Pixel 9. No particular charger, price, or paid repair is needed to correct the settings described here.

Confirm the selected screen saver
In Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver, review Choose a screen saver and select the content you meant to display. A phone can have multiple active screen savers. Swipe left or right at the screen edge to switch among them; use the setup screen to review or reorder the active choices.
This is an easy detail to miss when the screen saver does start but does not look like the expected one. An unexpected clock or other item does not necessarily mean the phone ignored your selection: another active saver may be available by swiping at the screen edge. Review the setup screen’s active choices and ordering, then use the preview to check the selected configuration. Do not assume that the preview proves that the normal charging and timeout conditions are being met; it tests the configured saver without the usual wait.

Check the source for a photo frame
If the selected screen saver is a personal photo frame, review its Photos source and settings. The feature needs access to photos and media. If that access is absent, the selected frame may not be able to show the intended personal pictures. Check both that the photo-frame option is selected and that the intended Photos source is configured; selecting the right kind of saver alone does not confirm that it has access to the pictures you expect.
Google’s instructions identify the permission requirement but do not establish a guaranteed recovery procedure for a source that remains unavailable after settings and access are checked. The documented next step is therefore to verify the selection, source settings, and photo/media access rather than to install a third-party repair app or pay for a screen-saver fix.

Check weather location access
For real-time weather, Google specifies location permission set to Always allow. A more limited location permission may not meet that stated requirement. Confirm that weather is the selected screen-saver content and that its location access matches Google’s requirement. A clock or another available saver appearing instead may also be a selection or multiple-saver issue rather than a weather display fault.
If weather still does not appear after checking the selected saver and permission, the documented guidance does not specify a further Pixel 9-specific fix. Avoid treating a permission check as a guaranteed solution: it is a stated requirement, not a published promise that every missing-weather problem will be resolved by changing it.
Adjust low-light behavior
Open Low light mode from the screen-saver settings and choose the available behavior: switch to a low-light clock or turn the screen off. A dark room can therefore make the screen appear to change content or disappear, even when the selected saver and start condition are otherwise correct. Google says the low-light clock is the default behavior when the environment is dim.

If a screen saver seems to vanish only when the room is dark, check this control before changing the content selection. The two low-light choices are behavior preferences: one changes the display to a low-light clock, while the other turns the screen off. They are not separate fixes for charging or permission problems.
What Pixel 9 screen savers can display
Google’s Pixel help documentation describes screen-saver options that include clocks, weather updates, a personal photo frame, charging status, and home controls for custom charging screen savers. Availability depends on the screen-saver type and, for some content, permissions. The instructions identify some of these options as applying to Android 14 and later; exact choices and menu wording can vary with software version.
Choose based on what you want the phone to show while it is charging. For example, a photo frame requires photo/media access, while real-time weather requires location access set to Always allow. A clock, charging status, or home controls serve different purposes; Google does not publish a comparative performance or reliability ranking for these choices in its Pixel guidance.
Because options and wording can vary with software version, do not assume that every Pixel 9 will show an identical list or that every choice will be available regardless of the selected screen-saver type. If a choice described in general help does not appear on your setup screen, the documented guidance does not provide a Pixel 9 build-by-build menu comparison. Work with the choices shown in your current screen-saver setup and check the relevant source and permission for the content you want.
What to know about accessories, costs, and further fixes
The ordinary remedies described here are settings and permission checks: enabling the screen saver, matching the start condition to how the phone is charging, letting the screen time out, selecting the intended content, and granting the listed access. No paid software, repair tool, or subscription is indicated as necessary to address these configuration issues.

A Qi-certified wireless charger is optional if you specifically want to use wireless charging. Pixel 9 supports Qi-certified fast wireless charging, and the screen-saver settings can restrict the saver to wireless charging, but neither fact makes a wireless charger a general prerequisite. The guidance does not name a particular product or price, so compare compatibility for any charger you consider rather than assuming a specific accessory will solve a settings problem.
If you have completed the relevant checks and the issue remains, Google’s documented screen-saver instructions do not supply a guaranteed deeper recovery sequence for a photo or weather source that remains unavailable. In particular, they do not support promising that a reset, an app, or a repair will fix this type of configuration problem. For physical display symptoms such as flicker, lines, failure to turn on, or visible damage, consult Google’s separate screen-appearance troubleshooting instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When this is not a screen-saver configuration issue
If the display flickers, shows lines, fails to turn on, or appears physically damaged, those symptoms are different from a screen saver that does not start or shows unexpected content. Google provides separate guidance for screen-appearance problems; the charging, timeout, content, and permission checks here do not diagnose display hardware faults.
Keep the distinction clear: a screen saver that fails to launch under the selected conditions is a setup or usage question; a screen that has persistent visual or power-on symptoms is a broader display question. The screen-saver steps cannot establish whether a hardware problem exists or rule one out.

Why won’t my Pixel 9 screen saver start?
Check that Use screen saver is on, then check When to show and any wireless-only restriction. The phone must meet the selected charging condition, and the display must time out naturally. Google says turning off the phone with the Power button prevents the screen saver from starting.

How can I test a Pixel 9 screen saver without waiting?
Open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and tap Use screen saver. This previews the selected configuration. For the normal automatic test, meet the charging condition and let the display time out.
Does a Pixel 9 screen saver require wireless charging?
No. Wireless charging is only an additional requirement if Restrict to wireless charging is enabled. Otherwise, select the documented charging condition that matches how you use the phone.
Why does my Pixel 9 show a different screen saver than I selected?
Review the active screen-saver choices and their order in the setup screen. More than one saver can be active; swipe left or right at the screen edge to switch between them.
What permissions do Pixel 9 photo and weather screen savers need?
A personal photo frame needs access to photos and media. Google specifies location permission set to Always allow for real-time weather.
Why does the screen saver turn into a clock or go dark in a dim room?
Check Low light mode in screen-saver settings. Google says the low-light clock is the default in a dim environment; the available setting lets you choose the low-light clock or turning the screen off.
Do I need to pay for an app or repair to fix a screen saver that shows the wrong content?
The documented troubleshooting is to check settings, content sources, and permissions. No paid software or repair tool is indicated for ordinary screen-saver misconfiguration. Physical display problems are a separate issue.
The Bottom Line
For a Pixel 9 screen saver that will not start, confirm it is enabled, match When to show to the charging setup, account for any wireless-only restriction, and let the display time out instead of pressing Power. For wrong or missing content, review the selected and active savers, photo source or weather permission, and low-light behavior. Use Use screen saver to preview the configuration; seek separate display guidance for flicker, lines, failure to turn on, or physical damage.
