Start by checking whether it appears only in one map or addon, then confirm that content’s requirements and whether its assets are available to Garry’s Mod. Since Facepunch’s July 2025 update, most Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 episodic content is included by default, so buying Counter-Strike: Source is no longer a universal first fix.
What the checkerboard means
Facepunch describes the black-and-purple checkerboard as a missing texture: the game has an object or map surface to display but cannot access its texture. Its technical reference calls this the pink-and-black error texture. A large red “ERROR” sign is different: it indicates a missing model, not a missing texture. Why old Counter-Strike: Source advice has changed
Facepunch’s July 2025 update added most Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 episodic content to Garry’s Mod by default. The update was intended to address a majority of missing-content cases, but Facepunch says it does not eliminate every missing texture or ERROR model. It excluded those games’ maps, voice-over files, and music. Therefore, a checkerboard is not by itself a reason to buy Counter-Strike: Source; first identify the particular asset the affected map or addon needs. Read the July 2025 update notes.
Find where the missing texture appears
If it is limited to one map or addon
Check the map or addon’s official page, description, and installation instructions for named game-content requirements or asset packs. A creator may rely on content that is not part of Garry’s Mod’s default installation. Facepunch also identifies addon authoring and installation errors as possible sources of remaining missing-content problems.

If it appears across unrelated content
Look for a broader availability or installation issue rather than assuming every affected map has the same missing dependency. Confirm that the content required by the affected items is installed and accessible before moving on to game-file troubleshooting.
Check whether installed content is mounted
Having required game content installed does not always mean Garry’s Mod can use it. Facepunch’s mounting documentation explains how Garry’s Mod can scan specified folders and VPK files for content. If the required assets are present but still unavailable, inspect the relevant mount configuration. The cited instructions are for a dedicated server, so treat their examples as server-oriented; client configuration may differ. See Facepunch’s mounted-content documentation.

Validate game files if the problem continues
If checking the map or addon requirements and content availability has not helped, follow Facepunch’s current troubleshooting guidance for validating Source game files. Validation can help with damaged or incomplete game files, but it cannot supply a third-party asset that the map or addon requires. See Facepunch’s common-problems guide.

- Pink-and-black checkerboard: a texture or material is unavailable.
- Large red ERROR sign: a model is unavailable; it is a separate symptom.
- Only one map or addon is affected: check that content’s dependencies and installation first.
- Required content is installed but still missing: check whether Garry’s Mod can access it through mounting.
Facepunch’s July 2025 update addresses many missing-content cases, but does not guarantee that every checkerboard or ERROR model will disappear. The cause still depends on the affected content and setup.
