How to Fix phpLDAPadmin Login Problems With the Admin Account

If phpLDAPadmin rejects an administrator login, first verify the authentication mode and the complete LDAP distinguished name (DN). In interactive cookie or session mode, enter a DN such as cn=admin,dc=example,dc=org, not just admin. If you are managing the LDAP configuration database, the correct identity may instead be cn=admin,cn=config.

What “admin account” means in phpLDAPadmin

phpLDAPadmin does not have one universal administrator username. It submits LDAP bind credentials to the server entry selected in its configuration. The administrator identity is therefore the DN created by your LDAP deployment and by the naming context you selected.

• Directory suffix: A regular directory might use cn=admin,dc=example,dc=org. The dc=example,dc=org portion is only an example; use the suffix configured on your server.
• Configuration database: The special OpenLDAP configuration tree commonly uses cn=admin,cn=config. This is a different naming context with separate access controls and often a separate password.
• Attribute-based login: If phpLDAPadmin is configured with login_attr='uid', you may type a value such as directoryadmin, but phpLDAPadmin must find the corresponding entry and then bind as its DN. The documented default is login_attr='dn', which expects the full DN.

Consequently, changing the password is not the first fix. Confirm which tree and which authentication path the web interface is using.

How phpLDAPadmin’s authentication modes change the login screen

The project configuration example defines five auth_type values: cookie, session, http, config, and sasl. The value in the active server entry controls whether phpLDAPadmin asks you for credentials and how it obtains them.

For a normal administrator who needs to type a password in the browser, cookie or session is the relevant choice. Use config only when you intentionally accept a static credential in the PHP configuration file; it removes the login prompt rather than fixing a failed interactive bind.

Step-by-step repair procedure

1. Identify the exact server entry and authentication mode

1. Open the active phpLDAPadmin config.php used by the web installation.
2. Find the server entry whose name or host appears on the phpLDAPadmin login page. Multiple entries can point to different LDAP databases, ports, or naming contexts.
3. Inspect its login/auth_type setting. For an interactive form, select cookie or session. If it is config, the page is not intended to collect an administrator password for that entry; inspect login_dn and login_pass in the file instead.
4. After changing the file, reload the page and clear an old browser session or cookie. A stale session can make a correct configuration appear unchanged.

Do not put a password into login_dn or login_pass for cookie/session mode in an attempt to help the search. Those fields are intended to remain blank in the documented interactive configuration.

2. Enter the complete administrator DN

In cookie or session mode, type the DN exactly as it exists in the selected LDAP tree. A DN is a sequence of attribute-value pairs, and every component matters:

cn=admin,dc=example,dc=org

Replace the example suffix with your own directory suffix. A server using dc=corp,dc=internal would not accept the example suffix, even if the common name is still admin. Spaces, capitalization conventions, escaped characters, and the order of RDN components should match the actual entry; do not add a suffix based on a hostname unless that is how the directory was created.

If the selected tree is cn=config, try the administrator DN created for that tree, commonly:

cn=admin,cn=config

The ordinary directory administrator, such as cn=admin,dc=example,dc=org, may not have visibility into or permission to bind to cn=config. Treat those identities as separate accounts until your server configuration proves otherwise.

3. Keep search credentials separate from login credentials

phpLDAPadmin may need to search for a user before it can bind as that user. The optional bind_id and bind_pass values are for that search operation when anonymous search is disabled. They are not substitutes for the password entered by the administrator in cookie or session mode.

• If anonymous searches are permitted, leave bind_id and bind_pass blank.
• If anonymous search is denied, set bind_id to a service or administrator DN that can search the configured base, and set its matching password in bind_pass.
• If bind_id is nonblank, its password must be present and valid. A missing or mismatched search credential can make a correct user password look invalid because phpLDAPadmin never finds the user entry.
• Do not assume that a bind account with search permission is also the account you should use for the final administrative bind. Verify both permissions independently.

4. Check the login attribute, base, and object-class filter

The documented default is login_attr='dn'. With that setting, phpLDAPadmin treats the value in the username field as the complete DN. If you changed it to uid, phpLDAPadmin searches for a filter equivalent to (uid=<entered value>) and then binds as the DN returned by that search.

1. Read the server entry’s login_attr. If it is uid, enter the actual uid value, not a DN, unless the installation’s fallback behavior explicitly permits a DN.
2. Verify that login/base includes the administrator entry. A search rooted below the admin entry will never find it.
3. Inspect login/class. If its object-class filter excludes the administrator’s object, the search can return no result even though the DN and password are correct.
4. If the root DN has no uid attribute, enable the documented fallback-to-DN behavior or switch back to login_attr='dn' and enter the full DN.

This is the most common distinction between “the password is correct” and “phpLDAPadmin can locate the account.” LDAP must first find the intended entry in the right naming context; only then can it perform the final bind.

5. Configure and select cn=config explicitly

Autodetection of the OpenLDAP configuration database is not flawless. If the configuration tree does not appear, or the ordinary directory admin cannot administer it, add both naming contexts to the server entry’s base list. For example:

array('cn=config','dc=example,dc=org')

Use your real directory suffix in place of the example. Reload phpLDAPadmin, select the cn=config tree, and authenticate with that tree’s own administrator DN and password, commonly cn=admin,cn=config. Do not expect an account created under the regular suffix to automatically appear in the configuration tree.

When you switch back to the directory suffix, select that tree again and use its administrator DN. A successful login to one naming context does not prove that the same credentials or ACLs apply to the other.

6. Verify the same credentials outside the browser

phpLDAPadmin’s source emits the literal message “Invalid Username or Password.” That wording does not identify which stage failed. Test the same DN and password with an LDAP client from the host running phpLDAPadmin, for example:

ldapwhoami -x -H ldap://ldap.example.org -D 'cn=admin,dc=example,dc=org' -W

Replace the host, protocol, and DN with values from your deployment. The command prompts for the password rather than placing it in shell history. If your server requires TLS, use the appropriate secure URI and TLS options for that installation instead of copying the example unchanged.

• If ldapwhoami fails with the same DN, investigate the LDAP server, account state, naming context, or transport before changing phpLDAPadmin.
• If ldapwhoami succeeds but the web login fails, compare the selected server entry, auth_type, login_attr, login/base, and search bind settings.
• Check the LDAP server logs at the time of the attempt. They can distinguish an unknown DN, invalid credentials, an ACL denial, a TLS requirement, or an account-policy failure more precisely than the web message.

This is a diagnostic procedure, not a claim that every installation has the same command path or TLS policy.

7. Check account state, ACLs, and password policy

When the DN is exact and the server still rejects the bind, inspect deployment-specific controls:

• ACLs that deny a bind or restrict the account to a particular source address or transport.
• Lockout, expiration, or reset-required states imposed by the directory’s password policy.
• A password changed in a different LDAP database than the one selected in phpLDAPadmin.
• Server policies that require StartTLS or LDAPS before simple binds are accepted.
• Differences between the host, port, and protocol in phpLDAPadmin and those used by your command-line test.

There is no universal ACL, password-policy, or TLS default. Read the server’s effective configuration and logs rather than applying a broad permission change.

Diagnose the “Invalid Username or Password” message

Common configuration mistakes and safer corrections

Putting “admin” in a DN field

admin is a common name, not a complete LDAP identity. Unless the installation deliberately maps a different login attribute, use the full DN. The suffix must match the naming context, and the entry must actually exist there.

Using the directory suffix account for cn=config

The configuration database is a separate tree. Add it to the server base list, select it in the interface, and use its administrator credential. A successful bind in the regular suffix says nothing about access to cn=config.

Filling in login_dn for cookie/session mode

Interactive modes are designed for credentials supplied at the login page. Hard-coding values in those fields can produce confusing behavior and exposes a password in the PHP configuration. Keep them blank in the documented cookie/session setup.

Confusing a search bind with the administrator’s bind

bind_id exists so phpLDAPadmin can locate users when anonymous search is unavailable. It does not replace the user’s final bind credentials. Give the search account only the search rights it needs and verify the administrator’s bind separately.

Changing several variables at once

Change one layer, reload, and test: first the selected tree and auth_type, then the DN, then search settings, then server-side policy. Otherwise a successful login will not reveal which setting corrected the failure.

Security checklist before leaving the fix in place

• Use cookie or session when administrators should authenticate interactively.
• Protect config.php from web download and unauthorized filesystem access.
• Avoid config mode unless the static credential is an intentional operational choice; it removes the login requirement and stores the credential in the file.
• Use TLS whenever your LDAP policy requires it, and verify that the certificate and hostname settings match the server.
• Give a search bind only the directory visibility it needs; do not broaden ACLs merely to silence a login error.
• Remove temporary diagnostic credentials from shell history, notes, and copied configuration snippets.
• After editing the configuration, restart or reload the relevant PHP/web-server process if your deployment caches configuration, then end old phpLDAPadmin sessions.

A compact decision path

1. No login prompt: inspect auth_type. In config mode, correct the static values or deliberately switch to an interactive mode.
2. Login prompt appears: identify the selected naming context and enter its complete administrator DN.
3. Using uid or another attribute: verify the attribute, search base, and object-class filter; otherwise use the full DN with the default DN login attribute.
4. Searching is restricted: configure a valid matching bind_id/bind_pass pair, or restore an approved anonymous-search policy.
5. Working on cn=config: add that base explicitly, select its tree, and use its own administrator account.
6. Still rejected: run an equivalent LDAP bind test, read server logs, and check ACLs, account state, password location, and TLS requirements.

Following this order separates a wrong identifier from a failed search, a hidden naming context, and a server-side bind denial. The browser’s generic error is only the final symptom; the active server entry and LDAP logs provide the information needed to make the correction safely.
